Comparison of Riboflavin Status between Traditional Farming Women and Commercial Farming Women in Korea

  • this study was undertaken to compare the riboflavin status of rural women with different physical activity intensity and to determine factors influencing biochemical fiboflavin status. The study was carried out over three different farming seasons : planting (June), harvest(October) and interim(February) in two rural regions of Korea. One was a traditional farming region, the other a commercial farming region with heavier work intensity. Twenty women in the traditional region and eighteen women in the commercial region were involved. The intensity of physical activity was determined by a daily activity record. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedence. Dietary riboflavin intake was measured by the food frequency method. Riboflavin biochemical status was assessed by erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity coefficient (EGR AC) and ruinary riboflavin excretion. The results from the EGR AC and urinary riboflavin excretion during the period showed the overall riboflavin status of the commercial farming women was significantly worse than that of the traditional farming women(EGR AC p<0.0001, urinary riboflavin excretion p<0.05). The traditional farming group had about 40% with risk of riboflavin deficiency, whereas the commercial farming group had about 70%. Overall mean nutrient intake was not significantly different between the two groups, however, overall mean percent lean body mass representing long term physical activity was significantly higher in the commercial farming group ( <0.005). It appears that the biochemical riboflavin status of traditional farming women was significantly influenced by riboflavin intake and crude nitrogen balance while the biochemical riboflavin status of the commercial farming women was significantly influenced by riboflavin intake and percent of lean body mass over the three seasons. 신조성의 Ti-기반 합금 수소분리막의 설계 및 수소투과 성능 (Fabrication and Hydrogen Separation Performance of Newly Created Ti-Based Alloy Membrane)

  • 본 실험에서는 Ti를 기반으로 한 평판 수소 분리막을 설계하여 제조하였다. 새로운 조성의 Ti를 베이스로 한 수소 분리막을 찾기 위하여 여러 합금들의 물리화학적 특성과 수소투과도 사이의 상관관계에 대해 조사하였다. 이를 바탕으로 신조성의 합금막 2종(Ti14.2Zr66.4Ni12.6Cu6.8 (70 ㎛), Ti17.3Zr62.7Ni20 (80 ㎛))을 설계 및 제조하였다. 제조된 평판 수소 분리막은 300~500℃, 1~4 bar의 조건에서 혼합 가스(H2, N2), sweep 가스(Ar)를 이용하여 수소 투과 실험을 진행하였다. Ti14.2Zr66.4Ni12.6Cu6.8 합금막은 500℃, 4bar에서 최대 16.35 mL/cm2 min의 flux를 가지며, Ti17.3Zr62.7Ni20 합금막은 450℃, 4 bar에서 최대 10.28 mL/cm2 min의 flux를 가진다.

  • Mass culture of microalgae as feed for mollusc, crustaceans and fish is an important components of the mariculture industry (Metting Jr., 1996) Growth activator for tetraselmis suecica were screened in methanol and water soluble extracts of several seaweed tissues. Also examined in this study were change in growth rate, biochemical composition, and digestion efficiency, of T.suecica cultured with and without the most effective of these extracts, the water soluble component extracted form M. nitidium. 낙동강 하구 간석지에서 분리된 세균의 층별 종조성 및 특성에 관하여 (Vertical composition and character analysis of saprophytic bacteria isolated from the mudflat of Nakdong river estuary)

  • Bacterial identification was performed with morphological, physiological and biochemical tests to the isolates from the mudflat of 30cm depth sampled in Nakdong river estuary in March and June, 1985. Flavobacterium and Cnterobacteriaceae were regarded as dominants. Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Micrococcus, Vibrio, Aerococcus, Aerononas, Acinetobacter and Staphylococcus were founded in various depth. Vertical composition of bacterial genera in March was more diversiform than that of June. Character analysis was carried out with the calculation of similarity index (S). At a level of 85% similarity, the isolates were clustered into 5 groups and ungrouped 2 strains. Classifying groups of bacterial strains with determination schemes and groups from similarity index were in good agreement.

  • The article presents the results of the content of the chemical and biochemical composition of the pupa of the wild silkworm Saturnia pyri belonging to the family Saturniidae, species of Lepidoptera. The nutritional value of silkworm Saturnia pyri pupae was evaluated, which contained 51% dry matter, 52.50% crude protein, 27.89% fat, 10.50% chitin fibers, 2.5% ash and 27 macro- and microelements and 25 mg alpha tocopherols in 100 g oil. The X-ray fluorescence method was used to determine the content of mineral elements in the pupa of the silkworm Saturnia pyri. It was revealed that the pupa of this type of silkworm contains 25 elements, of which the relative amount of K, Mg, Na, Ca, Al is much higher than other elements.

Valorization of refined sardine oil in canned Sardina pilchardus

  • This study aimed to use refined sardine oil as a covering juice in canned Sardina pilchardus. The oil's fatty acid profile, acidity, peroxide value, and p-anisidine value were analyzed. The biochemical composition, histamine content, and bacteriological stability of the canned sardines were determined. The results showed that canned sardines contained 51.40 g of moisture, 27.87 g of fat, 17.91 g of protein, and 1.03 g of salt per 100 g net weight. The fatty acid composition included 10.35% polyunsaturated fatty acids, 8.86% saturated fatty acids, and 6.27% monounsaturated fatty acids, with the most abundant fatty acids being eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), palmitic acid, oleic acid, myristic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This recipe provided 8.88 g/100 g (net weight) of EPA and DHA. These findings support the interest in using refined fish oil to enrich foods with essential marine fatty acids, highly recommended for their health benefits and leading to encouraging prospects for sardine canneries to develop new and nutritious value products.

식이지방이 생체막 구조와 기능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Dietary Fat on Structure and Function of Mammalian Cell Membrane)

  • The currently accepted model of membrane structure proposes a dynamic, asymmetric lipid matrix of phospholipids and cholesterol with globular proteins embedded across the membrane to various degrees. Most phospholipids are in the bilayer arrangement and also closely associated with integral membrane proteins or loosely associated with peripheral proteins. Biological functions of membrane, such as membrane-bound enzyme functions and transport systems, are influenced by the membrane physical properties, which are determined by fatty acid composition of phospholipids, polar head group composition and membrane cholesterol content. Polar and non-polar region of the phospholipid molecule can interact, with changes in the conformation of a membrane-associated protein altering either its catalytic activity or the protein's interaction with other membrane proteins. Mammalian dietary studies attempted to change the lipid composition of a few cell membranes have shown comparisons, using essential fatty acid-deficient diets. In recent years, Clandinin and a few other workers have pioneered the study proving the influence of dietary fat fed in a nutritionally complete diet on composition of phospholipid classes of cell membrane. Modulation caused by diet fat was rapid and reversible in phospholipid fatty acyl composition of membranes of cardiac mitochondria, liver cell, brain synaptosome and lymphocytes. These changes were at the same time, accompanied by variety of membrane associated functions controlled by membrane-bound enzymes, tranporter and receptor proteins. The findings suggest the basic concept of the necessity of dietary fatty acid balance if consistency of optimal membrane structural lipid composition is to be maintained, as well as the overall inadequacy of describing the nutritional-biochemical quality of a dietary fat solely by its content of linoleic acid. Furthermore, they give light on the possible application to clinical and preventive medicine.

영양상담을 위한 전산화 프로그램 개발연구 (Development of computer programs for Nutrition Counseling)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a computer system with data file and computerized programs for nutrition counseling. In this research, a 16 / XT personal computer (word : COBOL) compatible with IBM-PC/XT was used. Computer system developed for this study was as follows: Data files(food composition list, food exchange list, nutrition management comment, special diet therapy) were used for analysis the nutritional status and the ntrition education comment. (1) Programs for the nutritional status assessment 1) General information a) Name, age, sex, higher, weight, activity, disease and special diet b) Ideal body weight and Obesity assessment(Kaup index and Broca index) c) Rest and athletics status d) Biochemical data comparision with standard 2) Food Intakes 3) Nutrient Intakes a) Comparison of the amounts intaked with the recommended dietary allowances for present weight. b) Comparison of the energy composition rate intaked with the recommended dietary allowances for present weight. b) Comparison of the energy composition rate intaked with the recommended for present weight and ideal weight. c) Nutrient analysis by each meal and snack. 4) Food intakes from each food group and comparison with recommended 5) Special nutrient analysis. (2) Programs for the nutrition education based on nutritional status assessment. 1) Suggestion of number of food exchange group 2) Nutritional assessment and advise comments 3) Nutritional management comments 4) Special diet therapy In the study, the nutritioal status and nutrition education comments are based on individual data from nutrition counseling.

UV-B가 강낭콩(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)의 지방산 구성, 지질과산화 및 polyamine 함량에 미치는 영향 (Effect of UV-B on fatty Acid Composition, Lipid Peroxidation and Polyamine in Kidney Bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.))

  • UV-B에 의한 강낭콩 식물의 피해양상, 지질과산화, 지질조성 변화와 UV-B에 대한 식물의 방어기작 등을 조사하기 위하여 3주간 UV-B 조사 실험을 수행하였다. UV-B 처리에 의해 초장이 약 22% 정도 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. MDA 함량은 UV-B 처리에 의해 약 50% 정도 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. Glutathione 및 ascorbate acid 함량은 UV-B 조사에 의해 산화형이 증가하고 환원형이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. UV-B 조사에 의한 지방산 구성 변화를 조사한 결과 당지질 및 인지질 모두 UV-B조사에 의해 포화지방산이 증가하는 것에 반해, 불포화지방산이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 강낭콩 잎에는 주로 3종류의 polyamine이 존재하는 것으로 나타났으며, 3종류 모두 UV-B 조사에 의해 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 실험 결과로 볼 때, UV-B 조사는 활성산소를 생성하여 생체막 지질에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, ascorbate acid, glutathione, polyamine 등의 항산화물질들이 이에 대한 피해를 최소화하기 위하여 작용하는 것으로 나타났다.

다기능 해양소재로서 홍해삼의 효능과 지역별 성분 비교를 통한 활용 가능성 연구 고찰 (Review on the Feasibility of Using Red Sea Cucumber (Stichopus japonicus) as a Multi-functional Marine Biomaterial and Comparing the Biochemical Components Collected from Different Regions in Korea)

  • This study aims to review the progress of biotechnological applications of sea cucumber and presents fundamental validation data on a range of methods and applications to determine the most promising fields for future exploitation and application. Sea cucumbers from different regions, subjected to numerous industrially applicable drying methods, were evaluated for their biochemical composition. The study highlights the nutritional excellence of Jeju red sea cucumber, particularly the high amino acid and fatty acid composition of its intestinal organs and the possibility of the industrial utilization of these organs. In addition, an efficient extraction method to extract collagen and chondroitin sulfate from red sea cucumber was established. The extracted collagen and chondroitin sulfate can be used as commercially valid biomaterials. Accordingly, the red sea cucumber was confirmed as a valuable source of raw food material of varied functionality and bioactivity. Upon conducting an analysis of patents thus far relating to the sea cucumber, it was found that the associated technology was limited to some parts of primary and secondary industries. Therefore, there is a clear need for the strategic development of technologies to produce specialized functional products from sea cucumber's raw materials, with a view to promote other related industries.
