This study reports the influence of application of sulphur on the yield and some quality by Chinese cabbage in field experiment. 1. By the application of sulphur fertilizer, the yields of Chinese cabbage were increased about 11~13 percent compared to control. 2. After harvest, the available sulphur amount in soil was increased, while the soil pH decreased. 3. The accumulation of nitrate in Chinese cabbage leaves was reduced by the sulphur application. 4. The amount of biochemical materials such as water-soluble pectin, phenolic compound, sugar, vitamin C in leaves were increased by sulphur application.
To investigate the effects of Oenanthe javanica sap (OJS) on plasma lipid composition, several biochemical parameters such as total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, GOT, GPT and malodialdehyde were compared in the four groups as follows: a normal group with basal diet, a control group with high-fat diet, a treatment group with high-fat diet and OJS 1 ml/kg, and the other treatment group with high-fat diet and OJS 1.5 mg/kg. In addition, the body weight change, food intake and food efficiency ratios were measured. In this study, treatment groups decreased plasma total cholesterol levels.
This study was attempted to investigate the effects of "Angelicae gigantis Radix extract" (AG.EX.) on the activities of GOT and GPT, the contents of total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, phospholipid and ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ in serum, and the weight change ratio of body, liver and spleen in the experimentally induced hyperlipemic rats by administering the extract of 300 and 500 mg/kg p.o.. Significant test was performed by comparision with the biochemical values between control group and experimentally hyperlipemic rats. In the activities of s-GOT and s-GPT inhibition effects were significantly appeared in all dose of AG.EX. (especially more excellent in ethanol extract) and Angelicae acutilobae Radix extract (AA.EX.) as compared with the control group. The content of total lipid was remarkably decreased in all sample group when compared with the control group, and AA.EX. showed more excellent decreasing effect than AG.EX. The contents of triglyceride and total cholesterol were significantly lowered in all sample group, and more significantly decreased in water extract of AG.EX. and ethanol extract of AA.EX. The content of phospholipid was significantly decreased in all sample group and AG.EX. was more significantly decreased than AA.EX. The increasing rate of body weight in all sample groups except AA.EX. 500 mg/kg was increased more than control group and more significantly remarkable in dose of 300 mg/kg than 500 mg/kg. The increasing rate of liver weight in all sample groups was increased more than control group, and AG.EX. was more increased than AA.EX.
A year round study was carried out to investigate the etiology, clinical signs, postmortem lesions and occurrence of naturally occurring enterotoxaemia in Black Bengal goats. Sixteen goats of different age and sex died in different seasons with sigh associated with enterotoxaemia made the materials of this study. Accidental access to large amount of concentrate was noted as one of the predisposing factors although few cases were reported to occur without known diet change. Younger animals(50%) and males(62.50%) were found more prone to the disease and it was likely to be more prevalent during winter(50%) followed by at rainy season(31.25%) and summer(18.75%). Diarrhoea(81.25%), dullness(56.25%), drooping of the ears(50%), anorexia(43.75%) were recorded as major clinical signs whereas enterocolitis(100%), lung edema(87.50%), fluid filled intestines(87.50%), enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes(56.52%) etc. were most common post mortem lesions found. A few cases showed lesions on heart(31.25%), brain(25%) and/or liver/spleen(18.75%) but no lesion was found on kidney. Thus the so called 'pulpy kidney' lesion was absent. Intestinal contents were subjected to conventional bacteriological culture based methods to identify the causal agents. Based on the morphological, cultural and biochemical properties the causal agent was identified as Clostridium perfringens. Despite the study was carried out at certain area it showed a clear picture of goat enterotoxaemia in terms of etiology, clinical signs, postmortem lesions and occurrence of goat enterotoxaemia in Bangladesh.
A biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) sensor loaded with Candida sp. was designed and constructed for the quick measurement of the concentrations of biologically assimilable organic substances dissolved in water. The sensitivity of the sensor was higher for glucose, acetic acid, aspartic acid and glutamic acid than that for lactose, sucrose and lactic acid. The sensitivities of BOD sensors loaded with $Zn^{2+}$ tolerant and intact strains were almost identical while the sensitivity of sensor loaded with Cd$^{2+}$ tolerant strain was considerably lower. The sensitivities of the sensors loaded with intact or $Zn^{2+}$ tolerant strains did not change with the concentration of $Cd^{2+}$ in the aqueous solution while the sensitivity of the sensor loaded with $Cd^{2+}$ tolerant strain decreased slightly. The sensitivities of the sensors loaded with intact strain, $Zn^{2+}$ or $Cd^{2+}$ tolerant strains were not affected by the concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ in the aqueous solution.n.
Bojungbangdocktang (BJBDT), a formula of eight Oriental herbs, is a modified herbal prescription of Bangdoktang and Bojungbangamtang. Recently, BJBDT was demonstrated to inhibit angiogenesis induced by vascular endothelial growth factor in human umbilical vein endothelial cells, enhance hematopoiesis and protect cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in normal MCF-10A breast cells. Nevertheless, there is no safety study of BJBDT before clinical trial so far. Thus, in the current study, we investigated the toxicity about ethanol-extracted BJBDT. Male and female Spraque Dawley (SD) rats were given orally by BJBDT at 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg for 4 weeks. Mortality, clinical signs and measured change of body weight, food consumption and water consumption were observed. In addition, we performed ophthalmologic, urinary, hematological, blood serum biochemical and histopathological examination. Any general toxicity was not found in BJBDT treated group. Also, there were no significant differences in the parameters such as body weight, food consumption and water consumption, a lot of urine and blood factor levels except HCT, MCHC, Ca, TG, Glucose and T-Bilirubin level compared with control group. Although HCT was elevated and TG was decreased in male rats, and MCHC, Glucose and T-Bilirubin were elevated and Ca and HCT were decreased in female rats, these were within normal ranges. Finally, we determined that maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was 1000 mg/kg and no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) was 500 mg/kg. Taken together, these results demonstrated that BJBDT is very safe to SD rats.

Toxicity screening of a newly developed oral heparin derivative were carried out in 6 male cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), composed of a treatment group and vehicle control group. A newly orally active heparin derivative, developed by Seoul National University, was once given to treatment group at dose of 500 mg/kg. A treatment group did not show any change in body weights, hematological parameters including platelet-related varivables (platelet, PDW, PCT, MPV) and serum biochemical parameters (e.g., AST, ALT, BUN, etc.) for 2 weeks compared with those of vehicle control group. We also confirmed the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax, 1.73 IU/ml) and the time (Tmax, 1 hr) to reach Cmax. The present study will be valuable in the proper interpretation for nonclinical study using cynomolgus monkeys in the development of new drug of heparin derivative.

This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a nutrition and exercise education program on weight control of adult women. The subjects of this study were 28 adult women aged 20-59 years residing in the Daegu area. The nutrition-exercise educational period was 12 weeks. The collected data consisted of items on general characteristics, anthropometric data, blood biochemical values, physical strength data, dietary behavior and nutrition knowledge scores of the subjects. During the 12 weeks of weight control, body mass index(BMI), % of body fat, body fat mass and waist-hip ratio significantly decreased. The level of plasma triglyceride decreased, but not significantly. The level of total cholesterol did not change compared to baseline before the program. After the weight control program, back muscle strength, sit-ups, push-ups, and sit-and-reach tests of the subjects significantly improved. The nutrition knowledge scores of the subjects significantly increased. Therefore, these results suggest that the nutrition-exercise education program may contribute effectively to weight reduction with improvement of physical strength in adult women.
This study was conducted to examine the hematological factors in cultured olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus depending on its growth stage and season. The study also aims at developing the standard hematological indicator for growth stage and season by examining total 16 parameters including whole blood (hematocrit, red blood cell and hemoglobin), biochemical (glucose, cholesterol, total protein, AST, ALT, $Na^+,\;K^+,\;Cl^-,\;Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}$ and osmolarity), and endocrine (cortisol and $T_3$) factors in plasma of cultured olive flounder. The result showed a growth stage-dependent increase of $T_3$ level in olive flounder while the level of cholesterol showed an inverse correlation to fish size. For seasonal fluctuation in cultured olive flounder of the same growth stage, the highest level of Ht and RBC was observed in autumn.
The completely mixed flow and plug flow (CAP) water quality model was developed for streams with discontinuous flows, a condition that often occurs in low base flow streams with in-stream hydraulic structures, especially during dry seasons. To consider the distinct physical properties of each reach effectively, the CAP model stream network can include both plug flow (PF) segments and completely mixed flow (CMF) segments. Many existing water quality models are capable of simulating various constituents and their interactions in surface water bodies. More complicated models do not necessarily produce more accurate results because of problems in data availability and uncertainties. Due to the complicated and even random nature of environmental forcing functions, it is not possible to construct an ideal model for every situation. Therefore, at present, many governmental level water quality standards and decisions are still based on lumped constituents, such as the carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD), the total nitrogen (TN) or the total phosphorus (TP). In these cases, a model dedicated to predicting the target concentration based on available data may provide as equally accurate results as a general purpose model. The CAP model assumes that its water quality constituents are independent of each other and thus can be applied for any constituent in waters that follow first order reaction kinetics. The CAP model was applied to the Geum River in Korea and tested for CBOD, TN, and TP concentrations. A trial and error method was used for parameter calibration using the field data. The results agreed well with QUAL2EU model predictions.
