  • Bioglass which is one of the surface active bionmaterials has a good biocompatibility but a poor mechanical strength, In the present work therefore two types of fluoride-containing bioglasses were coated on an alumina to improve mechanical strength. Crystallization of the coating layer and the hydroxyapatite formation on the bioactive glass coatings in tris-buffer solution were studied. When bioactive glass coated alumina was heat-treated Na2CaSi3O8 crystal was formed on the layer at lower temperature while wollastonite(CaSIO3) was obtained at higher temperature. Hydroxyapatite forming rate on the coating layer with Na2CaSi3O8 crystal was delayed with SiO2 contents in glass composition. However the hydroxyapatite was developed in 20minutes regardless SiO2 contents when the coating layer crystallized into wollastonite. More amount of P3+ ions were leached out of the coating layer with wollastonite than that with Na2CaSi3O8 crystal while Na+ and Ca2+ ions were leached out more easily from the Na2CaSi3O8 crystal containing coating layer.

  • A layer-by-layer coating was produced using electrophoretic deposition for a HA/Al2O3 coating layer and a bioglass coating layer on Co-Cr-Mo alloy with a roughness of 0.5 ㎛ (400 emery paper SiC). The corrosion behaviour was analyzed by assessing the coating layers' exceptional corrosion resistance, which outperformed the substrate. Cr ion release test using AAS was carried out, indicating that factional graded coating inhibited ion release from the uncoated substrate to coated sample. The porosity was expressed as a percentage, representing the extent of imperfections on the surface of all coatings. These imperfections fell within an acceptable range of 1% to 3%. The roughness of the coated surface was measured using atomic force microscopy, which revealed an excellent roughness value of 3.32 nm. Tape test technique for adhesion revealed that the removal area of the substrate coating layer varied by 11.92%. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of all coating material peaks and verified phases of the deposited coating layers. These findings provided evidence that the coating composition remains unaffected by the electrophoretic deposition process. The bioactivity was assessed by immersion in a simulated bodily fluid, which revealed the formation of HCA during a period of 5 days.

  • In this experiment, a highly porous scaffold of biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) was prepared using the spongereplica method. The BCP scaffold was coated with 58S bioactive glass (BG) and sintered for a second time. The resulting scaffold was coated with gelatin (Gel) and cross-linked with [3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide] and N-Hydroxysuccinamide (EDC-NHS). The initial average pore size of the scaffold ranged from 300 to $700{\mu}m$, with more than 85 % porosity. The coating of BG and Gel had a significant effect on the scaffold-pore size, decreasing scaffold porosity while increasing mechanical strength. The material and surface properties were evaluated by means of several experiments involving scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Cytotoxicity was evaluated using MTT assay and confocal imaging of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cells cultured in vitro. Three types of scaffold (BCP, BCP-BG and BCP-BG-Gel) were implanted in a rat skull for in vivo evaluation. After 8 weeks of implantation, bone regeneration occurred in all three types of sample. Interestingly, regeneration was found to be greater (geometrically and physiologically) for neat BCP scaffolds than for two other kinds of composite scaffolds. However, the other two types of scaffolds were still better than the control (i.e., defect without treatment).
