  • Recent developments in equations of state for molecular fluids have demonstrated the feasibility of using the hard-sphere equation to describe the effects of repulsive forces in simple fluids. By including a suitable term for attractive forces, most conveniently a uniform background potential, the properties of bio-macromolecular interaction can be roughly calculated. However, the choice of the potential used in perturbed hard-sphere chain (PHSC) theory for describing the attractions between macromolecules is rather complicated. For hard-sphere chains, the prediction accuracy from each model strongly depends on the choice of potential function.

  • Nuclear Environment Technology Institute (KHNP-NETEC) developed the conceptual design of the low and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) repository. Among many engineering challenges, it is of particular importance to find out an optimum arrangement of near-surface disposal vaults in the repository area to minimize the radionuclide flux and concentration at the interface between the geo-sphere and bio-sphere. • A hydroxyapatite microsphere was prepared using a spray-drying method. The change in the shape as a function of the slurry concentration and the change in the degree of shrinkage according to the heat-treatment temperatures were observed. To obtain biomaterials with improved bio-stability, $CaHPO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $Ca(OH)_2$ were mixed at a ratio of 6 : 4 and then ball-milled to synthesize hydroxyapatite. The hydroxyapatite microsphere was prepared using 30 wt% ~ 80 wt% hydroxyapatite slurry by a spray-drying method. For concentrations lower than 50 wt% or higher than 80 wt%, doughnut-shaped microspheres were produced. However, perfect microspheres were produced when using slurry concentrations of 50 wt% ~ 70 wt%. A dense microstructure was observed after a heat treatment at temperatures higher than $1100^{\circ}C$ and the size was reduced by 24.3% at these temperatures.

  • This paper offer the characteristics for the detection and classification of biological and non-biological aerosol particles in the air by using laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) based Bio-aerosol Detection System (BDS). The BDS is mainly consist of an optical chamber, in-outlet nozzle system, 405 nm diode laser, an avalanche photo detector (APD) for scattering signal and photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for fluorescence signals in two different wavelength range ; F1, 510-600 nm and F2, 435-470 nm. The detection characteristics, especially ratio of fluorescence signal intensity were examined using well-known components : polystylene latex (PSL), fluorescence PSL, $2{\mu}m$ of SiO2 micro sphere, dried yeast, NADH, ovalbumin, fungicide powder and standard dust. The results indicated that the 405 nm diode laser-based LIF instrument can be a useful bio-aerosol detection system for unexpected biological threaten alter in real-time to apply for dual-use technology in military and civilian fields.

  • Multi-layered granules were prepared by a fluidized-bed coater and uniformed granules were obtained with a size range between $950{\sim}1000{\mu}m$ in diameter. The granule system was composed of three layers, i.e. seed layer with sugar sphere bead and a water-swellable polymer, middle layer with a drug, solubilizer and polymer, and the top layer of porous membrane with a polymeric binder. The aim of this work is to find out the dependence of a drug dissolution rate on the amount of a water-soluble binder and a solubilizer in the granule system. The results showed that the higher amount of hydrophilic binder in the porous membrane, gave the bigger pore size and porosity and made faster dissolution rate and also the higher amount of solubilizer in drug layer enhanced the dissolution rate of drug.

  • The purpose of this study was the evaluation of spectral transmission of the commercial three shade guides and the relationship of hue, value, and chroma according to the transmission rate. The spectral transmittance of three shade guides - Vita Lumin Shade Guide, Vintage and Unibond Shade Guide, and Vitapan 3D-Master Shade Guide - were measured. For direct transmission measurements, each shade tabs were placed at the entrance port of the 1mm diameter intergrating sphere. The intensity of the light source passing through the shade tabs to the right angle was continuously recorded for wavelength from 400 to 700 nm. A transmission spectrum and digital data were obtained for each measurement and they were evaluated using Microcal Origin program. The obtained results of this study were as follows : 1. In Vita Lumin Shade Guide, sum of the transmission rate of the shade tabs at the wavelength 400-700nm was decreased in agreement with the arrangement order at each A, B, C, D group, except D4 shade tab. However, there were no relationships between the transmission rate of the shade tabs and the value-oriented. 2. In Vintage and Unibond Shade Guide, sum of the total transmission rate of the shade tabs was decreased in agreement with the arrangement order at each A, B, C, B group. When all shade tabs arranged in value-oriented, transmission rate was accord with the order, except D4 shade tab. 3. When shade tabs of the Vitapan 3D-Master Shade Guide have the same value and hue, sum of their total transmission rate decreased in accordance with the chroma-oriented. When the shade tabs have the same value and chroma, there were no differences from the order of the transmission rate to the various hue type. However, in the 'R' tabs of reddish hue type, the transmission rate increased at the long wavelength range area. In conclusion, we need the quantitative analyzing instruments in transmission determination. Vitapan 3D-Master Shade Guide covers the tooth color space taking into account the parameters of the systematic value, chroma, hue oriented, and the transmission rate relatively accorded with that sequence.

  • The information on agricultural weather over the Korean Peninsula was produced, using the Bio-sphere-Atmosphere Transfer Scheme(BATS). We modified the input and output portions of BATS such that the whole processes can be excuted as a package. Based on this approach, automatic production system of agricultural meteorology information was developed. The results of this model was compared with the observed data. The differences between the model results and observed data for surface temperature, rooting zone temperature and top soil temperature were 2.0$^{\circ}$C, 2.0$^{\circ}$C and 2.6$^{\circ}$C, respectively.

  • Development and discovery of efficient, cost-effective, and robust electrocatalysts are imperative for practical and widespread implementation of water electrolysis and fuel cell techniques in the anticipated hydrogen economy. The electrochemical reactions involved in water electrolysis, i.e., hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, are complex inner-sphere reactions with slow multi-electron transfer kinetics. To develop active electrocatalysts for water electrolysis, the physicochemical properties of the electrode surfaces in electrolyte solutions should be investigated and understood in detail. When electrocatalysis is conducted using nanoparticles with large surface areas and active surface states, analytical techniques with sub-nanometer resolution are required, along with material development. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is an electrochemical technique for studying the surface reactions and properties of various types of electrodes using a very small tip electrode. Recently, the morphological and chemical characteristics of single nanoparticles and bio-enzymes for catalytic reactions were studied with nanometer resolution by combining SECM with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Herein, SECM techniques are briefly reviewed, including the AFM-SECM technique, to facilitate further development and discovery of highly active, cost-effective, and robust electrode materials for efficient electrolysis and photolysis.
