  • In this paper, we review the latest technical progress and commercialization of stretchable interconnectors, stretchable strain sensors, and stretchable substrates for stretchable electronics. The development of stretchable electronics can pave a way for new applications such as wearable devices, bio-integrated devices, healthcare and monitoring, and soft robotics. The essential components of stretchable electronic devices are stretchable interconnector and stretchable substrate. Stretchable interconnector should have high stretchability and high electrical conductivity as well as stability under severe mechanical deformation. Therefore several nanocomposite-based materials using CNT, graphene, nanowire, and metal flake have been developed. Geometric engineering such as wavy, serpentine, buckled and mesh structure has been well developed. Stretchable substrate should also pose high stretchability and compatibility with stretchable sensing or interconnecting material. We summarize the recent research results of new materials for stretchable interconnector and substrate as well as strain sensors. The Important challenges in development of the stretchable interconnector and substrate are also briefly discussed.

  • In this letter, we propose the use of tunneling field effect transistors (TFET) as a biosensor that detects bio-molecules on the gate oxide. In TFET sensors, the charges of target molecules accumulated at the surface of the gate oxide bend the energy band of p-i-n structure and thus tunneling current varies with the band bending. Sensing parameters of TFET sensors such as threshold voltage ($V_t$) shift and on-current ($I_D$) change are extracted as a function of the charge variation. As a result, it is found that the performances of TFET sensors can surpass those of conventional FET (cFET) based sensors in terms of sensitivity. Furthermore, it is verified that the simultaneous sensing of two different target molecules in a TFET sensor can be performed by using the ambipolar behavior of TFET sensors. Consequently, it is revealed that two different molecules can be sensed simultaneously in a read-out circuit since the multi-sensing is carried out at equivalent current level by the ambipolar behavior.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an early warning system for rainfall induced landslides. For this study, we suggested an analysis process using rainfall forecast data. 1) For a selected slope, safety factor with saturated depth was analyzed and safety factor threshold was established (warning FS threshold=1.3, alarm FS threshold=1.1). 2) If rainfall started, saturated depth and safety factor was calculated with rainfall forecast data, 3) And every hour after safety factor is compared with threshold, then warning or alarm can issued. In the future, we plan to make a early warning system combined with the in-situ inclinometer sensors.

  • Disposable amperometric screen-printed biosensor strips have been fabricated by a sol-gel encapsulation for the analysis of glucose. The glucose oxidase(GOx) is entrapped in the gel matrix through sol-gel transition of tetraethoxysliane(TEOS). The biosensor is fabricated by GOx containing thin film of TEOS gel on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrode(SPCE). The GOx-containing thin film of TEOS gel offers a one-step modification process on the surface of SPCE. The optimum conditions for glucose determination have been characterized with respect to the applied potential, enzyme loading ratio, and pH. The linear range and detection limit of glucose detection were from 2.0 mM to 16.0 mM and 0.25 mM, respectively.

  • We report electrokinetic streaming potential detection in a microchannel. Streaming potential, one of the representative electrokinetic phenomena, becomes noticeable either when the channel size reduces or when the concentration of electrolyte reduces. We suggest a triangular-shaped microchannel to enhance streaming potential. The triangular-shaped microchannel shows better performance than the straight one in terms of streaming potential. Couple of possible methods to enhance streaming potential is also discussed. Moreover, this type of channel and phenomenon can be applied to biological sensor application and energy transduction.

  • This paper presents a microfluidic cell sizing method using hydrophoretic size-based separation. By exploiting slanted obstacles in a microchannel, we can generate a lateral pressure gradient so that microparticles can be deflected and arranged along lateral flows induced by the gradient. Using such movement of particles, we discriminated 8 to 15 μm-sized beads. We measured the size of U937 cells by comparing the hydrophoretic response of the cells to those of the size-standard beads whose diameters are known. Due to its simple design and fabrication, the sizing method can be easily integrated with other microfluidic components such as cell culture chambers conducting on-chip sizing and sorting.

  • In this study, real-time and label-free methods for monitoring the enzymatic reaction of urease, which releases ammonia through the hydrolysis of urea in an aqueous solution, were developed using a liquid crystal (LC)-based pH sensor. Nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB), doped with 4'-pentyl-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (PBA), exhibited a shift in optical appearance from bright to dark when it was in contact with ammonia generated from the enzymatic reaction between urease and urea. This optical change was attributed to the anchoring transitions of LCs caused by hydrophobic interactions between the tails of deprotonted PBA ($PBA^-$) molecules and the LCs at the aqueous/LC interface. This novel technique holds great promise for the sensitive detection of urease along with its substrates and inhibitors.

  • In order to measure bio-signals, it is desirable to build a fully implantable system which connects directly to neural pathways or body tissue. A design scheme for fully implementable measurement system is proposed in this paper. Consisting of an implanted module and an external system, the proposed scheme delivers power and data between the two modules. The external module sends power via inductive link using a simple H-bridge type oscillator. Also, the implanted module sends measured data to the external system utilizing R/F communication technique at a frequency of ISM band. A stable communication and operation is achieved as the two types of channels are separated. Implemented in a compact size enough to be implanted in human body, the system exhibits good performance in experimental studies.

  • Colloidally synthesized luminescent nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their unique nanoscale optical and electronic properties. The emission properties of these NCs can be precisely tuned by controlling their size, shape, and composition as well as by introducing appropriate dopant impurities. Nowadays, these NCs are actively utilized for various applications such as optoelectronic devices including light emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, and solar cells, and bio-medical applications such as imaging agents and bio-sensors. In this review, we classify luminescent nanomaterials into quantum dots (QDs), upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), and perovskite NCs and present their intrinsic emission mechanism. Furthermore, the recently emerging issues of efficiency, toxicity, and durability in these materials are discussed for better understanding of industry demands. As well, the future outlook will be offered for researchers to guide the direction of future research.
