Electrorheological Effect of the Suspension Composed of Bismark Brown Chitosan Succinate as the Dispersed Phase

  • The electrorheological effect of the suspension composed of Bismark Brown chitosan succinate as the dispersed phase in silicone oil was investigated. Bismark Brown chitosan succinate suspension showed a typical ER response (Bingham flow behavior) upon application of an electric field. The shear stress for the suspension exhibited the dependence with a factor equals to 1.84 power on the electric field. The experimental results for the suspension correlated with the polarization model and Bismark Brown chitosan succinate suspension behaved as an anhydrous ER fluid. On the basis of the results, Bismark Brown chitosan succinate suspension showed the ER flow behavior upon application of the electric field due to the polarizability of the branched amide and amine polar groups of the Bismark brown chitosan succinate particles.

  • The Magnetorheological fluid has the properties that its viscosity has drastic changed under some magnetic fields therefore, Magnetorheological fluids has been used fur micro polishing of the micro part(for example, a spherical surface in a micro lens). The polishing process may appears as follows. A part rotating on the spindle is brought into contact with an Magnetorheological finishing(MRF) fluids which is set in motion by the moving wall. In the region where the part and the MRF fluid are brought into contact, the applied magnetic field creates the conditions necessary for the material removal from the part surface. The material removal takes place in a certain region contacting the surface of the part which can be called the polishing spot or zone. The polishing mechanism of the material removal in the contact zone is considered as a process governed by the particularities of the Bingham flow in the contact zone. Resonable calculated and experimental magnitudes of the material removal rate for glass polishing lends support the validity of the approach.

  • A multi-cylindrical hydraulic valve incorporating with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid is developed in this study. Field-dependent Bingham properties of the ER fluid are exploited to devise the valve system which features fast system response as well as simple mechanism. The fast response is accrued from almost instant response characteristics of the ER fluid itself, and the mechanism configuration is simplified since no nechanically moving parts are required. The material properties of the ER fluids to be utilized for modeling of the proposed valve system are firstly tested with a couette-type electroviscometer. The design and manufacturing processes are then undertaken on the basis of model parameters. The performance characteristics of the valve system are evaluated in terms of pressure variations with respect to the intensity of employed electric fields and flow rates.

  • Effects of rheological parameters, such as shear rate, temperature, concerntration, salts on the apparent viscosity of chitosan(deacetylation degree: $84\%$, Mw: 267,000) dissolved in acetate buffer(pH 4.5) were investigated. Rheologiral properties of chitosan solution from cuticle of red snow crab (Chinonecetes japonicus) are as follows. $0.5\%$ chitosan in 0.1M acetate buffer (pH 4.5) solution showed Bingham flow having hysteresis loop. It's flow equation was $\sigma=0.757+19.6_\gamma(r^2=0.99)$. The viscosity of chitosan solution is exponentially increased with its concentration, and showed Arrhenius dependence with respect to the temperature $(10^{\circ}C-40^{\circ}C).$ When various salts were added to chitosan solution, the viscosity decreased as the concentration of counterion increased. But the type ot counterions itself does not have any significant effects on the viscosity.

Rheological Models for Describing Fine-laden Debris Flows: Grain-size Effect (세립토 위주의 토석류에 관한 유변학적 모델: 입자크기 효과)

  • This paper presents the applicability of rheological models for describing fine-laden debris flows and analyzes the flow characteristics as a function of grain size. Two types of soil samples were used: (1) clayey soils - Mediterranean Sea clays and (2) silty soils - iron ore tailings from Newfoundland, Canada. Clayey soil samples show a typical shear thinning behavior but silty soil samples exhibit the transition from shear thinning to the Bingham fluid as shear rate is increased. It may be due to the fact that the determination of yield stress and plastic viscosity is strongly dependent upon interstructrual interaction and strength evolution between soil particles. So grain size effect produces different flow curves. For modeling debris flows that are mainly composed of fine-grained sediments (<0.075 mm), we need the yield stress and plastic viscosity to mimic the flow patterns like shape of deposition, thickness, length of debris flow, and so on. These values correlate with the liquidity index. Thus one can estimate the debris flow mobility if one can measure the physical properties.

  • In this paper, we propose a lava flow simulation program to predict the range of lava flows area and thickness of lava flows during volcanic eruptions. The map information is represented as a 'cell' with observed values per fixed area such as DEM and a lava flow prediction algorithm using a cellular automata model is performed to predict the flow of lava flows. To obtain quantitative data of lava flows, fluid properties of lava flows are defined as Bingham plastic fluid and derived equation is applied to the rules of cellular automata. To verify the program, we use a 30m resolution DEM provided by USGS. We compared simulation results with real lava flows for the Pu'u'O'o crater area in Hawaii, which has erupted since May 24, 2016.

Characteristics and Dynamic Modeling of MR Damper for Semi-active Vibration Control (준능동 진동 제어를 위한 MR 감쇠기의 동적 모델링을 통한 특성분석)

  • This research is aimed to evaluate characteristics and dynamic modeling of MR damper for semi-active vibration control. A MR damper of semi-active type was designed and made for the purpose of controlling the vibration of a real-size model structure. Usually a semi-active control system equipped with a MR damper requires a dynamic model which expresses numerical data about the damping capacity and dynamic characteristics generated by a MR damper. To fulfil the requirement, a Power model and a Bingham model were particularly employed among many dynamic models of MR damper. Those models being contrasted with other ones, a dynamic test was carried out on the developed MR damper. In the test, excitation frequencies were conditioned to be 0.15 Hz, 1.0 Hz, and 2.0 Hz, and three different currents were adopted for each frequency. From these test results, it was found that displacement affected control capacity of the MR damper. The test results led to the identification of model variables for each dynamic model, on the basis of which a force-speed relation curve and expected damping force were derived and contrasted to those of the developed MR damper. Therefore, it was proven that the MR damper designed and made in this research was effective as a semi-active controller, and also that displacement of 2mm at minimum was found to be secured for vibration control, through the test using various displacements.

Dynamic Modeling of Semi-active Squeeze Mode MR Damper for Structural Vibration Control (구조물의 진동 제어를 위한 압착식 MR 감쇠기의 동적 모델링)

  • Normally in order to build a semi-active control system equipped with MR damper, the dynamic modeling of the damper is required to numerically predict its dynamic damping force and also its behavioral characteristics. For the dynamic modeling of the MR damper, this paper attempts to predict and evaluate its dynamic behavior by applying specifically both a power model and a Bingham model. Dynamic loading tests were performed on the squeeze type of damper specially designed for this research, and force-displacement hysteresis loops confirmed the effectiveness of the damper as a semi-active control device. In the meantime, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of each model applied, the model parameter for each model was identified. On the basis of the parameter, we derived the error ratio of the force-velocity relationship curve and the dynamic damping force, which was contrasted and compared with the experimental results of the squeeze type of damper. Finally, the squeeze type of MR damper developed in this research was proved to be valid as a semi-active control device, and also the evaluation of the two dynamic models showed they were working fine so that they were likely to be easily utilized to numerically predict the dynamic characteristics of any dampers with MR fluid as well as the squeeze type of MR damper.
