  • The objective of the present study is to study the Soret effect of both nanoparticles and solute on the convective instabilities in binary nanofluids. A new stability criterion is obtained based on the linear stability theory. The results show that the Soret effect of solute(${\psi}_{bf}$) makes the binary nanofluids unstable significantly and the convective motion in a binary nanofluid sets in easily as the ratio of Soret coefficient of nanofluid to that of binary basefluid ${\delta}_4$ increases for ${\delta}_4$ > -1. It is also found that as an increase of the volume fraction of nanoparticles, nanofluid becomes stable but at a separation ratio of ${\psi}=-0.3$ the state of fluid changes from stable to unstable.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the combined heat and mass transfer enhancement using binary nanofluids as the working fluids in a $H_2O$/LiBr absorber. The result of heat and mass transfer experiment with the additives(Arabicgum, 2E1H) showed that the heat and mass transfer performance of binary nanofluid with 2E1H enhanced significantly in comparison with that without additive. In the case of 0.01wt% $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluids with 2E1H, the vapor absorption rate increased up to 77% in comparison with that without additive. The heat transfer rate of 0.01wt% $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluids with 2E1H increased up to 19%. Based on the experimental results, it is recommended that the $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluid be good with 2E1H to improve the heat and mass transfer performance.

  • The objectives of this paper are to analyze simultaneous heat and mass transfer performance for a plate type bubble absorber with binary nanofluids numerically and to investigate the effects of binary nanofluids and surfactants on the size of the bubble absorber. The effective absorption ratio represents the effect of binary nanofluids and surfactants on the absorption performance. The kinds and concentrations of nano-particles and surfactants are considered as the key parameters. The results show that the addition of surfactants can reduce the size of absorber up to 74.4%, the application of binary nanofluids does the size up to 63.6%. Combination of binary nanofluids and surfactants can reduce the size of absorber up to 77.4%.

  • This study investigates the distribution stability of binary nanofluids where binary mixtures such as $NH_3/H_2O$ and $H_2O/LiBr$ solution are used as a base fluid. When a little amount of certain nanosized particles is added into a basefluid, the thermal conductivity of that mixture increases greatly. Such mixtures are named 'nanofluids' where nano-particles should be distributed stably and uniformly so the distribution stability of nanoparticles in nanofluids is one of the most important factors for nanofluid application. Therefore, binary nanofluids in which binary mixtures are applied as the basefluids are considered as working fluids. The kind and the concentration of nanoparticles, and the concentration of ammonia are considered as the key parameters. The objectives of this paper are to visualize the dispersed status of particles in binary nanofluids and to find the effect of key parameters on the distribution stability in the ammonia absorption system.

  • A nanofluid is a fluid containing suspended solid particles, with sizes on the order of nanometers. Normally, nanofluids have higher thermal conductivitiest han their base fluids. Therefore, we measured the thermal conductivity and viscosity of oxidized carbon nanofluids based the mixture of distilled water and ethanol (ethanol concentration is 0.2) oxidized carbon nanofluids were made by ultrasonic dispersing oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the mixture of distilled water and ethanol at the rates of 0.001~ 0.1 vol%. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of oxidized carbon nanofluids were measured by using transient hot-wire method and rotational digital viscometer, respectively. And all of experiments were carried out at the same temperature conditions($10^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$). As a result, when volume fraction of nanofluids is 0.1 vol%, thermal conductivity was improved 13.6% ($10^{\circ}C$), 15.1% ($25^{\circ}C$), and 17.0% ($70^{\circ}C$), and its viscosity was increased by 36.0% ($10^{\circ}C$), 32.9% ($25^{\circ}C$) and 19.5% ($70^{\circ}C$) than the base fluids.
