  • In this paper, we propose an improved image decryption system using a phase-encoded image and the principle of interference. An original image and a random image consist of only binary values. The phase-encoded original image is encrypted into a binary phase-only image by multiplying with a phase-encoded random key. Therefore the phase-encoded images have two phase values 0 or $\pi$. The proposed decryption technique is simply performed by interfering between a reference wave and a direct pixel-to-pixel mapping of the encrypted image with a decrypting key. Optical experiments confirmed that the proposed technique is a simple and robust architecture for optical encryption.

  • This paper presents a new demixing method that separates each source from a stereo sound mixture. Under the W-Disjoint Orthogonal assumption in DUET(Degenerate Unmixing Estimation Technique) algorithm. The proposed method is mainly processed in time-frequency domain by using windowed-fourier transform. In this paper there are two main contributions: a weighted mask by panning index distances and a binary mask by comparing each channel value. The former has tender demixing characteristic, and the latter has stronger demixing characteristic. In experimental results, we will show that both masks produce more robust demixing than the existing demixing methods do.

  • In this paper, we propose an occlusion compensation algorithm which is used for virtual view generation. In general, since occlusion region is recovered from neighboring pixels by taking the mean value or median value of neighbor pixels, the visual characteristics of a given image are not considered and consequently the accuracy of the compensated occlusion regions is not guaranteed. To solve these problem, we propose an algorithm that considers primary visual characteristics of a given image to compensate the occluded regions by using seam carving algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, we first use Sobel mask to obtain the edge map of a given image and then make it binary digit 0 or 1 and finally thinning process follows. Then, the energy patterns of original and thinned edge map obtained by the modified seam carving method are used to compensate the occlusion regions. Through experiments with many test images, we verify that the proposed algorithm performed better than conventional algorithms.

  • This paper proposes a modified jointly-blue noise mask (MJBNM) method using the S-CIELAB color measure as digital color halftoning method. Based on an investigation of the relation between the pattern visibility and the chromatic error, of a blue noise pattern, a halftoning method is proposed that reduces the chromatic error, while preserving a high quality blue noise pattern. Accordingly, to reduce the chrominance error, the low-pass filtered error and S-CIELAB chrominance error are both considered during the mask generation procedure and calculated for single and combined patterns. Using the calculated low-pass filtered error, the patterns are then updated by either adding or removing dots from the multiple binary patterns. Finally, the pattern exhibiting the lower S-CIELAB chrominance error is selected. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can produce a visually pleasing half toned image with a lower chrominance error than the JBNM method.

  • In this paper, we propose a new X-masking scheme for utilizing logic built-in self-test The new scheme exploits the phase-shifting network which is based on the shift-and-add property of maximum length pseudorandom binary sequences(m-sequences). The phase-shifting network generates mask-patterns to multiple scan chains by appropriately shifting the m-sequence of an LFSR. The number of shifts required to generate each scan chain mask pattern can be dynamically reconfigured during a test session. An iterative simulation procedure to synthesize the phase-shifting network is proposed. Because the number of candidates for phase-shifting that can generate a scan chain mask pattern are very large, the proposed X-masking scheme reduce the hardware overhead efficiently. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed X-masking technique requires less storage and hardware overhead with the conventional methods.

  • This study proposed LDP (Local Directional Pattern) as a new local micro pattern for facial expression recognition to solve noise sensitive problem of LBP (Local Binary Pattern). The proposed method extracts 8-directional components using $m{\times}m$ mask to solve LBP's problem and choose biggest k components, each chosen component marked with 1 as a bit, otherwise 0. Finally, generates a pattern code with bit sequence as 8-directional components. The result shows better performance of rotation and noise adaptation. Also, a new local facial feature can be developed to present both PFF (permanent Facial Feature) and TFF (Transient Facial Feature) based on the proposed method.

  • Manual inspection of steel box girders on long span bridges is time-consuming and labor-intensive. The quality of inspection relies on the subjective judgements of the inspectors. This study proposes an automated approach to detect and segment cracks in high-resolution images. An end-to-end cascaded framework is proposed to first detect the existence of cracks using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and then segment the crack using a modified U-Net encoder-decoder architecture. A Naïve Bayes data fusion scheme is proposed to reduce the false positives and false negatives effectively. To generate the binary crack mask, first, the original images are divided into 448 × 448 overlapping image patches where these image patches are classified as cracks versus non-cracks using a deep CNN. Next, a modified U-Net is trained from scratch using only the crack patches for segmentation. A customized loss function that consists of binary cross entropy loss and the Dice loss is introduced to enhance the segmentation performance. Additionally, a Naïve Bayes fusion strategy is employed to integrate the crack score maps from different overlapping crack patches and to decide whether a pixel is crack or not. Comprehensive experiments have demonstrated that the proposed approach achieves an 81.71% mean intersection over union (mIoU) score across 5 different training/test splits, which is 7.29% higher than the baseline reference implemented with the original U-Net.

  • In this paper, the rotation and size invariant fingerprint recognition using the neural network EART (Extended Adaptive Resonance Theory) is studied ($515{\times}512$) gray level fingerprint images are converted into the binary thinned images based on the adaptive threshold and a thinning algorithm. From these binary thinned images, we extract the ending points and the bifurcation points, which are the most useful critical feature points in the fingerprint images, using the $3{\times}3$ MASK. And we convert the number of these critical points and the interior angles of convex polygon composed of the bifurcation points into the 40*10 critical using the weighted code which is invariant of rotation and size as the input of EART. This system produces very good and efficient results for the rotation and size variations without the restoration of the binary thinned fingerprints.

  • The tool for developing airborne software requires the same level of safety as airborne software because the tool whose output is part of the airborne software and thus could insert an error into the airborne software. This paper describes how to ensure the reliability of the tool output that becomes a part of the airborne software by validating of the input and output files of the tool when generating the ARINC 661 standard UA definition file and the CDS configuration file through the A661UAGEN tool of Hanwha Systems. We present the method to validate XML data structure and contents with an XML schema definition, which is an input of the A661UAGEN tool. And the method to validate the output binary data by using mask data for the corresponding data structure and valid value, which is the output of the A661UAGEN tool, was presented. As such, validation of the input and output of the tool improves the reliability of binary DFs and CDs integrated into the airborne software, allowing airborne software developers to utilize the tool to ensure safety in developing the OFP.

  • Halftonig is a technique to create the appearance of intermideate tone levels by controlling the spatial distribution of the binary pixel values. Recently, many printing devices such as image setter, inkjet printer, laser printer and facsimile, generate image, they require the technique. Ordered dither is achieved comparing the gray scale image to periodic array. This method is fast, but it occurs periodic patterns. Conentional error diffusion generates a good image. But processing speed is very slow and appeares worm artifacts in middle tone scale. To improve it, Bns(Blue noise Screen) is developed based on Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we discribe methods to design BNS based human visual characteristics and to improve blue appearing at edge area of image by USM(using unsharp mask).
