  • A simple molecular theory of mixtures is formulated based on the nonrandom two-fluid lattice-hole theory of fluids. The model is applicable to mixtures over a density range from zero to liquid density. Pure fluids can be completely characterized with only two molecular parameters and an additional binary interaction energy is required for a binary mixture. The thermodynamic properties of ternary and higher order mixtures are completely defined in terms of the pure fluid parameters and the binary interaction energies. The Quantitative prediction of vapor-liquid, and solid-vapor equilibria of various mixtures are demonstrated. The model is useful, in particular, for mixtures whose molecules differ greatly in size. For real mixtures, satisfactory agreements are resulted from experiment. Also, the equation of state (EOS) is characterized well, even the liquid-liquid equilibria behaviors of organic mixtures and polymer solutions with a temperature-dependent binary interaction energy parameter.

  • Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is an effective method of power generation, which has a small impact on the environment and can be utilized semi-permanently. This paper describes a dynamic model for a pilot OTEC plant built by the Institute of Ocean Energy, Saga University, Japan. This plant is based on Uehara cycle, in which binary mixtures of ammonia and water is used as the working fluid. Some simulation results attained by this model and the analysis of the results are presented. The developed computer simulation can be used to actual practice effectively, such as stable control in a steady operation, optimal determination of the plant specifications for a higher thermal efficiency and evaluation of the economic prospects and off-line training for the operators of OTEC plant.

  • The lattice-fluid theory are adopted for modeling the phese equilibria in supercritical fluids, In order to investigate effects of the nonrandom distribution of holes in mixtures on the phase equilibria, the equation of state and the chemical potential of the binary miture are formulated with taking into account nonrandomness of holes distributions in the fluid mixture. The relations of phase equilibria formulated in this work are tested through predictions of solubility of heavy solids in supercritical fluids and predictions of high pressure phase equilibria of binary mixtures. Results obtained exhibit that the lattice fluid model with assumptions of nonrandomness of hole distributions is successful in quantatively mideling the phase equilibria of mixtures of molecules of dissimilar sizes, specifically solids-supercritical fluid mixtures.

  • A molecular-thermodynamic model is developed for the salt-induced protein precipitation. The protein molecules interact through four intermolecular potentials. An equation of state is derived based on the statistical mechanical perturbation theory with the modified Chiew's equation for the fluid phase, Young's equation for the solid phase as the reference system and a perturbation based on the protein-protein effective two body potential. The equation of state provides an expression for the chemical potential of the protein. In a single protein system, the phase separation is represented by fluid-fluid equilibria. The precipitation behaviors are simulated with the partition coefficient at various salt concentrations and degree of pre-aggregation effect for the protein particles. In a binary protein system, we regard the system as a fluid-solid phase equilibrium. At equilibrium, we compute the reduced osmotic pressure-composition diagram in the diverse protein size difference and salt concentrations.

  • Isothermal (vapor + liquid) equilibrium data measurements were undertaken for the binary mixtures of (propylene oxide + 1-pentanol) system at three different temperatures (303.15, 318.15, and 333.15) K. The Peng-Robinson-Stryjek-Vera equation of state (PRSV EOS) was used to correlate the experimental data. The van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule was used for the vapor phase and the Wong-Sandler mixing rule, which incorporates the non-random two liquid (NRTL) model, the universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) model and the Wilson model, was used for the liquid phase. The experimental data were in good agreement with the correlation results.

  • This study describes the numerical simulation of three-dimensional droplet formation and the following motion in a cross-junction microchannel by using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). Our aim is to develop the three-dimensional binary fluids model, consisting of two sets of distribution functions to represent the total fluid density and the density difference, which introduces the repulsive interaction consistent with a free-energy function between two fluids. We validated the LBM code with the velocity profile in a 3-dimensional rectangular channel. Then, we applied our code to the numerical simulation of a binary fluid flow in a cross-junction channel focusing on the investigation of the droplet formulation. Due to the pressure and interfacial-tension effect, one component of the fluids which is injected from one inlet is cut off into many droplets periodically by the other component which is injected from the other inlets. We considered the effect of the boundary conditions for density difference (order parameter) on the wetting of the droplet to the side walls.

  • 영산강 하구역은 하구둑에 의해 하천의 수체가 정체되어 수질문제가 심각한 지역이다. 이를 관리하기 위해 수질변화의 예측은 필수적이며, 주로 EFDC(Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) 모델이 활용된다.

  • A fully coupled fluid flow, heat, and solute transport model was developed to investigate turbulent flow, solidification, and macrosegregation in a continuous casting process of steel slab with EMBR. Transport equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species for a binary iron-carbon alloy system were solved using a continuum model. The electromagnetic field was described by the Maxwell equations. A finite-volume method was employed to solve the conservation equations associated with appropriate boundary conditions. The effects of intensity of magnetic field and carbon segregation were investigated. The electromagnetic field reduces the velocity of molten flow in the mold and an increase in the percentage of C in steel results in a decrease of carbon segregation ratio.
