Characteristics of Bi-2212 Superconductor Tube Depending on Heat-treatment Conditions (열처리 조건에 따른 Bi-2212 초전도 튜브의 특성)

  • Bi-2212 HTS tube was fabricated by centrifugal forming and partial melting processes. Bi-2212 bulk tube has been optimized to achieve smooth surface and uniform thickness. The slurry was prepared in the mixing ratio of 10:1 between Bi-2212 powder and binder and initially charged into the rotating mold under the speed of 300~450 rpm. Heat-treatment was performed at the temperature ranges of 860~89$0^{\circ}C$ in air for partial melting. the HTS tube fabricated by centrifugal forming process at 89$0^{\circ}C$ under the rotating speed of 450 rpm was highly densified and the plate-like grains with more than 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were well oriented along the rotating axis. The measured Tc and J$_{c}$ at 10K on specimen heat treated at 89$0^{\circ}C$ was around 85 K and 1,200 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively.y.

  • $SrSO_4$ were systematically added on Bi2212 from 0 to 10wt% to study the effect of Bi2212 superconductor tube characteristics. After mixing, the melted solution of Bi2212 and $SrSO_4$ was initially poured into the cylinder type of steel mold preheated at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30min and rotated at 1000rpm. Following that, tube was annealed at $840^{\circ}C$ for 72hrs. The tube dimension was 60 in diameter, 60mm in length and 2mm in thickness. XRD data suggests that there was no typical segregation phase related with $SrSO_4$. Well textured grain with typical 2212 phase was observed and average size was $20{\mu}m$. The measured critical current and critical current density of Bi2212 tube added by 5% $SrSO_4$ at 77K were 495A and $202A/cm^2$ respectively.

  • Bi-2212 HTS tube was fabricated by centrifugal forming process(CFP). As a variation of melt casting process(MCP) or centrifugal casting technique, the centrifugal forming process is a flexible method for manufacturing Bi-2212 bulk tubes and has been optimized to achieve smooth surface and uniform thickness. At this process, the slurry was prepared in the mixing ratio of 10:1 between Bi-2212 powder and binder and initially charged into the rotating mold under the speed of 300~450 rpm Heat-treatment was performed at the temperature ranges of 860 ~ $890^{\circ}C$ in air for partial melting. The HTS tube fabricated by centrifugal forming process at $890^{\circ}C$ under the rotating speed of 450 rpm was highly densified and the plate-like grains with more than 20$\mu$m were well oriented along the rotating axis. The measured Tc and Jc at 10K were around 85K and 3,000A/cm2 respectively.

  • The important merit of Bi-2212/Ag wire is to apply cable as round wire state. Bi-2212 high Tc superconducting wires were fabricated in order to apply Rutherford cable near the future. Various Ag ratio from 0.22 to 0.42 of Ag tubes for PID (powder-In-Tube) process were used to investigate the workability and to prevent breakage of filaments during drawing. In order to find proper heat treatment condition, we investigated micro-structure of Bi-2212/Ag wires by using differential thermal analysis, XRD and SEM. The effect of atmosphere on the peritectic decomposition temperature of precursor was investigated. The shape of grain was observed by SEM to investigate Bi-2212 phase formation in filaments. The higher of Ag ratio of mono filament had the higher critical current density, Jc. The wire with 0.42 of Ag ratio showed 7,886 A/cm2 of Jc at 77K.

  • High-temperature Superconductor(HTS) tubes were fabricated in terms of different chemical compositions and various SrSO$_4$additions by centrifugal forming method. For powder melting by induction the optimum range of melting temperatures and preheating temperature were 1050$^{\circ}C$, 1100$^{\circ}C$ and 550$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, respectively. The mould rotating speed was 1000 rpm. A tube was annealed at 840$^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The plates like grains more than 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were well developed along the rotating direction of mould regardless of initial chemical compositions and the amounts of SrSO$_4$in Bi2212. The specimen with Bi2212 composition exhibited T$\_$c/ of 83 K, while the specimens fabricated with other compositions are lower than 60 K. The measured I$\_$c/ and J$\_$c/ at 77 K(B = 0 T) in Bi2212 with 7 % SrSO$_4$ composition were about 680 A and 380 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • The Bi2212 based HTS tubes with 4 different compositions, Bi:Sr:Ca:Cu = 2.0:2.0:1.0:2.0, 2.1:2.0:1.0:2.0,2.2:1.8:1.0:2.0 and 2.2:1.8.1.0.2:2 with 10% of SrSO$_4$ were studied. For tube fabrication the optimum range of melt temperatures and preheating temperature and time for mold were 105$0^{\circ}C$~110$0^{\circ}C$ and 55$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min respectively. The mold rotating speed was 1000rpm. Typical tube dimension was 30/24mm in outside/inside diameter and 60mm in length. A tube was annealed at 84$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The plate like grains more than 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were well developed along the rotating direction of mold regardless of initial chemical compositions. The specimen with Bi2212 composition exhibited $T_c$ of 83K while the specimen with other compositions are lower than 60K. The measured $I_c and J_c$ at 77K(B = 0T) in Bi2212 composition were about 80A and 266A/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

KERI and Nexans Korea manufactured Rutherford cabling machine by ourselves. Rutherford cables with 20 - 30 strands could be fabricated by this machine. The shape of Rutherford cables were satisfied. The critical current of Bi2212/Ag round wire with 847 filaments showed 400 A at 4.2K and self field.

  • We developed the Centrifugal Forming Process(CFP) for HTS tube fabrication. The self-designed equipment for CFP is devided into 3 main parts depending on its role and functions. the melting part by heating of high inductive frequency, centrifugal forming part for the tube and efficient microstructure control of Bi2212 phase and molding part for tube detachment after heat treatment. In this paper we will introduce self designed Centrifugal Forming Process for HTS tube fabrication and discuss about the results related mold materials in terms of high Tc superconductor.

  • Bi-2212 HTS tube was fabricated by CFP(Centrifugal Forming Process). Slury was prepared in the mixing ratio of 8:2 between powder and binder and ball-milled for 24 hrs. Slurry was initially charged into the rotating mold with 300${\sim}$450 rpm and heated at the temperature ranges of 840${\sim}$860$^{\circ}$C for partial melting to finally obtain a uniformly textured tube shape. It was observed the plate-like grains with more than 20 ${\mu}$m were well oriented along the rotating axis and the measured T$_c$ was around 67K. In this paper we will discuss and analyze the tube characteristics depending on many different processing parameters such as, powder composition, binder mixing ratio between powder and binder, motor speed, heating temperature and etc.

  • Round shape Bi2212/Ag is isotropic and can be fabricated Rutherford cable to transport high current. Bi2212/Ag round wires with various Ag ratio were fabricated using powder-in-tube process. Double stacked 385 (55\times$7) filamentary wire of various wire diameter was heat-treated at various melting temperature. Wires which have Ag ratio of 0.3 and 0.42 of Ag tube for monofilament show similar critical current density. As average filament diameter decreases from 33 to 16 \mu$m, critical current density of wires increase, and in case of 16 ${\mu}m$ and $T_m$ 890$^{\circ}C$, critical current density was 2,062 $A/mm^2$ at 4.2 K, 0 T.
