The substituent effects on the fluorescence of 2-(substituted anilino)benzoic acids and their aluminum chelate compounds were examined and satisfactory linear relationships between Hammett substitute constants, .sigma. and the lowest excited singlet energy levels were obtained. But fluorescence intensity only made a qualitative relationship with .sigma. values of substituent groups. Effects of solvents and metal ions on the native and metal chelate fluorescence of the above derivatives were also investigated.
We aim to develop a simple method for simultaneous and quantitative determination of benzoic acid, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid in seeds of Eriobotrya japonica. In addition, antibacterial effect of these three phenolic acids was examined. A basic method is performed on the high performance liquid chromatography system coupled to an UV-detector (230 nm) and reverse phase C-18 column ($4.6{\times}150mm$, $5{\mu}m$). Each phenolic acid was confirmed via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (MS)/MS system under the multiple-reaction monitoring with negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI(-)) mode. It is demonstrated that the method was could be applied to samples for an analytical study of the phenolic acids. On the other hand, three phenolic acids in seeds of E. japonica exhibited antibacterial effect against several pathogenic bacteria. Of these, benzoic acid was found to have stronger antibacterial effect.
The genotoxicity of combinations of four p-oxybenzoic acids (methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, isopropyl paraben, butyl paraben) and benzoic acid had been evaluated. The in vitro Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium (TA 98, TA 100, 1535, TA 1537) and the invivo micronucleus assay using mouse peripheral blood were performed. Methyl paraben plus benzoic acid, ethyl paraben plus benzoic acid, and ethl paraben plus butyl paraben slightly increased the frequency of microuncleated reticulocytes in the high doses, but were negative in Ames test with Salmonella typhimurium with and without rat liver microsomal activation. The other combinations tested were negative in Ames test and did not show any clastogenic effect in micronucleus test. These results suggest that genotoxicity can produced by th combination of p-oxybenzoic acid.
Fatty acid components of the Chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus YASUMATSU) were analyzed by the method of gas chromatogrphy at various developmental stages. 1. The fatty acids identified at each stage are as follows : Larva stage : acetic acid , benzoic acid and capric acid. Prepupa stage : acetic acid, benzoic acid and capric acid. Pupa stage : acetic acid, benzoic acid and capric acid. 2. Through the development of the wasp, there were large amount of acetic acid.
The synthesis of O-desmethylangolensin (O-DMA) analogues from methoxy-substituted benzoic acids was described. Treatment of methoxy-substituted benzoic acids with 2 equiv of ethyllithium afforded methoxypropiophenones, which were subsequently transformed to ethyl 2-(methoxyphenyl)propionates via 1,2-rearrangement of the methoxyphenyl group using $Pb(OAc)_4/HClO_4$ in triethyl orthoformate. After hydrolysis with KOH, the 2-(methoxyphenyl)propionic acids were reacted with di-2-pyridyl carbonate to afford 2-pyridyl 2-(methoxyphenyl)propionates, which were acylated with methoxy-substituted phenylmagnesium bromides to give methoxy-${\alpha}$-methyldesoxybenzoins. The methoxy groups of these compounds were selectively or fully demethylated using boron tribromide to give diverse O-DMA analogues in high yields.
In this study, sorbic acids and benzoic acids frequently used in foods retailed in Korea were monitored and their estimated daily intakes were assessed for a purpose to ensure food additives safety management. The estimated daily intakes were calculated by categorizing the assessment items into the national average, by gender, by age and the high intake ($95^{th}$) groups based on concentrations of preservatives in foods as well as national health and nutrition survey data. The calculations were then compared with the ADI of the JECFA and the possibility of risk to be imposed on the people was examined. The results indicated that the estimated daily average intakes of preservatives were $221.60{\mu}g/kg{\cdot}bw/day$ of sorbic acids and $27.30{\mu}g/kg{\cdot}bw/day$ of benzoic acids. Compared to the ADI, the intake levels were 0.89 and 0.55% respectively, which were in a safe range. The estimated daily intakes of sorbic acids and benzoic acids in the high intake group ($95^{th}$) were $1140.27{\mu}g/kg{\cdot}bw/day$ and $194.95{\mu}g/kg{\cdot}bw/day$, which were 4.56% and 3.90% of the ADI (%) respectively, indicating that the intake levels of sorbic acids and benzoic acids in the high intake group were within a safe range. As for gender difference, the amount of benzoic acids intake was slightly larger in men than in women. However, gender differences were not observed in terms of the intake of sorbic acids. In terms of the levels of intake by age, the rates were found to be in the range of 0.52-2.10% for sorbic acids and 0.15-1.23% for benzoic acids. Therefore, the levels of sorbic acids and benzoic acids intakes were found not to exceed the ADI in all groups, and thus were within the safe ranges.
In order to standardize the ${\sigma}^*,\;{\rho}^*$ is taken as unity for the benzoic acids by analogy with the fact that ${\rho}$ of benzoic acids in the ground state is taken as unity. The $pK_{\alpha}^*$ of many benzoic acid derivatives are determined by UV spectroscopy and fluorescence spectral analysis whenever possible. The ${\sigma}^*$ constants are derived from the Hammett equation utilizing these $pK_{\alpha}^*$ values and the $pK_{\alpha}^*$ of the benozic acid derivatives showed better correlationship with ${\sigma}^*$ than ${\sigma},\;{\sigma}^+\;and\;{\sigma}^-$ as expected. From these ${\sigma}^*$ values, ${\rho}^*$ of the phenol derivatives was calculated to be 1.28. The new standardized ${\sigma}^*$ values are calculated from the $pK_{\alpha}^*$ values of phenols since more accurate and abundant data are available for phenols than the benzoic acid derivatives.
Chromatographic retention mechanism of seven benzoic acids in RPLC were investigated. Inorganic salt is pertinent for the measurement of dead time in benzoic acid. Logarthims of capacity factor (log k') and Hildebrand solubility parameter (${\delta}$) showed proportional relationship which imply the hydrophobic effect of the retention mechanism in RPLC. Enthalpies of solute transfer showed inverse proportion to temperature and organic modifier ratio of the mobile phase. It was found that the S value showed positive slope in plot of log k' vs. volume fraction of water in mobile phase. Free energy change increases with increasing organic volume fraction. The hydrophobicity index, ${\varphi}_0$(organic volume fraction) is inversely proportional to column temperature.

An analytical method applicable to quality control and its optimum conditions were studied for rapid and efficient analysis of sorbic and benzoic acids used as preservatives in the commercial soybean paste. In gas chromatographic analysis of sorbic and benzoic acids, the application of HP-FFAP (acid modified polyethylene) wide bore column improved the separation ability significantly. By setting the oven temperature of GC to $200^{\circ}C$, the total elapsed time for quantitative analysis was also reduced to the level required in using packed column. By extracting sorbic and benzoic acids from soybean paste with an automatic steam distillation device, the elapsed time for analysis was reduced by 80% more compared to using conventional steam distillation method. The recoveries of sorbic and benzoic acids by the automatic steam distillation were 98.1% and 99.9%, respectively. The sorbic acid was found in 3 samples of 14 commercial soybean pastes, of which contents were $466{\sim}530ppm$, while $0.3{\sim}4.4ppm$ of benzoic acid was found in all the samples.
The purpose of this study was to utilize the results as a basic data of benzoic acids in animal products that didn't mention in the quality standard of National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) to solve the conflict of international trade and administration. Set-Pak method listed in the quality standard of NVRQS, faster than auto distillation methods with same recovery selected as a pre treatment for the determination of benzoic acid. The regression curve of benzoic acid with Sep-Pak method was linear with the $R^2$ value of 0.999 and the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 0.058 mg/kg and 0.176 mg/kg, respectively. The benzoic acid in the fermented milk was detected after the fermentation stage by addition of starter culture with the level of 2.28~10.48 mg/kg and 0~16.5 mg/kg in the commercial fermented milk products without detection by the addition of syrup. In case of cheese products, the benzoic acids level was influenced by the curd formation (Camembert cheese) and the quality of natural cheese (processed cheese), by the way, the benzoic acid level of commercial natural cheese was 0~4.2 mg/kg, processed cheese was 0~20.8 mg/kg, respectively. Based on this result, it may be possible to utilize as a basic data for the systematic control the level of natural benzoic acids in raw material, processing and final products of animal origin.
