Synthesis and Characterization of Liquid Crystalline Polyurethanes Containing Aromatic Ring Moiety (방향족 고리를 갖는 액정폴리우레탄의 합성 및 특성)

  • Polyurethanes containing no mesogenic unit were prepared by polyaddition reaction of homo- and copolyurethanes based on para-type 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate (1,4-PDI), 2,6-bis($\omega$-hydroxypentoxy)naphthalene (BHN5) with 1,4-bis($\omega$-hydroxypentoxy)benzene (BHB5). All copolyurethanes showed monotropic liquid crystallinity, when measurements were performed under shearing. For example, a polyurethane Poly(50/50, mol%) with $[\eta]$=0.32 dL/g exhibited liquid crystallinity in the temperature range from $223^{\circ}C$ to $211^{\circ}C$ in the cooling stage. In contrast, two homopolyurethanes exhibited no explicit mesomorphic behavior, which was observed by DSC (Differental Scanning calorimeter) and measurement and polarized microscopic observation. The mesomorphic behavior of synthesized polyurethane was identified and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscope and X-ray.

Expression of Rat Hepatic Glutathione-S-Transferases by Benzoazoles (Benzoazole계 화합물이 glutathione-S-transferases의 유도발현에 미치는 영향)

  • Glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) detoxify electrophilic xenobiotics and reactive metabolites. Recently benzene-fused heterocycles have been shown to increase the total amount of hepatic GSTs in rats. Primarily this study aimed to determine the induction of GSTs by benzoazoles (BAs) including benzoxazole (BX), 2-methylbenzoxazole (M-BX), 2,5-dimethyl benzoxazole (D-BX), benzothiazole (BT), aminobenzothiazole (A-BT) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (M-BT) in rats. Hepatic cytosol and poly(A)$^+$ mRNA were prepared from rats after oral administration of BX, BT, M-BX, D-BX, A-BT and M-BT for 5 consecutive days at doses of 1 mmol/kg. Western immunoblot and northern blot analysis were conducted with rabbit anti-GST Ya, Yb$_1$, Yb$_2$, Yc antibodies and cDNA probes containing = 500 bps in the specific coding regions of Ya, Yb$_1$, Yb$_2$, Yc$_1$, and Yc$_2$, respectively. All BAs increased the amount of enzymes and mRNA levels of GSTs. BT was the most effective inducer of GSTs among the compounds examined in this study. Although A-BT and M-BT, the derivatives of BT, induced GSTs, these chemicals had lesser effect on induction of GSTs than BT. The derivatives of BX also induced less GSTs than the parent compound and the addition of methyl group to the benzene ring of BX reduced the induction of GSTs. BAs had better inductive effects on the class $\alpha$(Ya, Yc) than class $\mu$ GSTs (Yb$_1$, Yb$_2$). BAs enhanced mRNA levels of GSTs in parallel with the protein levels. These results indicate that 1) most of BAs induced various isozymes of GSTs, 2) the induction of GSTs appears to be correlated with the chemical structure of the derivatives, and 3) the expression of GST by BAs is presumably under the transcriptional regulation.

  • The crystal and molecular structure of P-aminobenzaldehyde cyclohexylthiosemicarbazone, C14H20N4S, has been determined from 2712 integrated intensities measured on a computer controlled four circle diffractometer with monochromated $CuK_{\alpha}$, X-ray radiation. The crystals are monoclinic, space group C2/c with eight molecules in a unit cell of dimensions, a = 12.488(2), b = 12.276(4), c = 19.997(6)${\AA}$ and ${\beta}=103.55(3)^{\circ}$. The structure was solved by Patterson and Fourier method and refined by a full-matrix least squares method to a final R value of 0.058 for all reflections. The C(8)-S bond is trans to N(2)-N(3) and C(8)-N(1) is cis to N(2)-N(3) bond. The cyclohexane ring has chair conformation and makes an angle of $40.7^{\circ}$ with the benzene ring. The molecules are linked by N(2)H…S hydrogen bonds into dimer-like units which are held together by $N-H{\ldots}N$ hydrogen bonds. Sulfur accepts second rather weak hydrogen bond from N(4). An intramolecular hydrogen bond exists between N(1) and N(3) atoms.

Synthesis and performance assessment of modified epoxy resins containing fatty acid (지방산 변성 에폭시수지 합성과 성능평가)

  • In this work, modified epoxy resins which were well melted in mild solvent were synthesized and solubility assessment was carried out for synthesized epoxy resins. Bisphenol-A type, phenol novolac type and ortho-cresol novolac type epoxy resins were used and fatty acid, dodecyl phenol (DP) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) were added for synthesis of modified epoxy resins containing fatty acid (MEFA). Composition was epoxy resin/fatty acid = 1.0/0.5 and fatty acid/DP = 0.25/0.25 by equivalent weight and twelve MEFAs were synthesized according to epoxy resins. Viscosity and solubility were measured for twelve MEFAs. As a result, solubility of MEFA was excellent for mild solvent according to increasement of contents of benzene ring, glycidyl group and carbon number of alkyl group. And physical properties were measured for each coating of paints after preparing transparent paints of MEFA to melt well in mild solvent among twelve MEFAs. As a result, they showed an optimal performance on conditions of equivalent ratio of bisphenol-A type epoxy resin/fatty acid/DP/TDI; 1.0/0.25/0.25/0.5 and equivalent ratio of phenol novolac type epoxy resin/fatty acid/DP; 1.0/0.25/0.25 for drying time, adhesion, hardness, impact resistance and alkali resistance.

A Study on the Reactions of Diamines with 2,5-Dimethoxytetrahydrofuran and 1,3-Acetonedicarboxylic Acid (1,3-Acetonedicarboxylic acid와 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran에 의한 diamine들의 반응에 관한 연구)

  • In order to synthesize novel anticonvulsants, we researched that the reactions of diamines with 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran and 1,3-acetonedicarboxylic acid. The reaction of ethylenediamine with 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran and 1,3-acetonedicarboxylic acid afforded 8-(2-pyrrol-1-yl-ethyl)-8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-one (yield; 5.0%) and 1,2-di-(8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan3-onyl)ethane (yield; 17.0%). In case of 1,3-diaminopropane, 8-(3-pyrrol-1-yl-propyl)-8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-one(yield; 6.0%) and 1,3-di-(8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-onyl)propane (yield; 21.0%) were obtained. In case of 1,8-diaminooctane, 8-(8-pyrrol-1-yl-octyl)-8-aza-bicyclo-[3,2,1]octan-3-one (yield; 2.6 %) and 1,8-di-(8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-onyl)octane (yield; 24.9%) were obtained. In diaminobenzene reactions, synthetic yields of 8-aza-bicyclo-[3,2,1]octan-3-one derivatives were higher than those of pyrrole derivatives because re actions were done under room temperature. The longer the carbon chain of diaminoalkane is, the more reactive N atom is due to more electron donating effect, and the less steric hindrance around the carbon gave the higher chemical yields. The reaction of p-phenylenediamine as a diaminobenzene with 2,5-dimethoxyte-trahydrofuran and 1,3-acetonedicarboxylic acid produced p-dipyrrolylbenzene (yield; 4.0%), 8-(4-pyrrol-1-yl-phenyl)-8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-one (yield; 12.0%), and 1,4-di-(8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-onyl)benzene (yield; 59.0%). In case of m-phenylenediamine, 8-(3-pyrrol-1-yl-phenyl)-8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-one(yield; 2.0%) and 1,3-di-(8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-onyl)benzene (yield ; 28.0%) were obtained. But, synthesis of 1,2-di-(8-aza-bicyclo[3,2,l]octan-3-onyl)benzene by treatment of o-phenylenediamine was not successful, presumably due to the steric hindrance of 8-aza-bicyclo-[3,2,1]octan-3-one rings.

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Benzene-sorbed Cd2+-Y(FAU) Zeolite (벤젠이 흡착된 Cd2+-Y(FAU) 제올라이트의 합성 및 구조연구)

  • Two single crystals of fully dehydrated $Cd^{2+}$-exchanged zeolites Y were prepared by the exchange of ${\mid}Na_{75}{\mid}[Si_{117}Al_{75}O_{384}]-FAU$ ($Na_{75}-Y$, Si/Al = 1.56) with aqueous $0.05M\;Cd(NO_3)_2$ (pH = 3.65) at 294 K, followed by vacuum dehydration at 723 K (crystal 1) and a second crystal, similarly prepared, was exposed to zeolitically dried benzene for 72 hours at 294 K and evacuated (crystal 2). Their structures were determined crystallographically using synchrotron X-rays and were refined to the final error indices using $F_o$>$4{\sigma}(F_o)$ of $R_1/wR_2=0.040/0.121$ and 0.052/0.168, respectively. In crystal $1({\mid}Cd_{36}H_3{\mid}[Si_{117}Al_{75}O_{384}]-FAU)$, $Cd^{2+}$ ions primarily occupy sites I and II, with additional $Cd^{2+}$ ions at sites I', II', and a second site II. In crystal $2({\mid}Cd_{35}(C_6H_6)_{24}H_5{\mid}[Si_{117}Al_{75}O_{384}]-FAU)$, $Cd^{2+}$ ions occupy five crystallographic sites. The 24 benzene molecules are found at two distinct positions within the supercages. The 17 benzene molecules are found on the 3-fold axes in the supercages where each interacts facially with one of site IIa $Cd^{2+}$ ions. The remaining 7 benzene molecules lie on the planes of the 12-rings where each is stabilized by multiple weak electrostatic and van der Waals interactions with framework oxygens.

Studies on the Preparation of Organic Compounds Labelled by $^{38}Cl$.(I) - Inorganic Yields of $^{38}$ Cl in Szilard Chalmer Reaction of Aromatic Chloro Derivatives

  • In order to clarify an effective procedure of labelling organic chloro compounds by $^{38}$ Cl, phenyl chloro derivatives(7 kinds), chloro nitrobenzenes(6 kinds), chloro anisoles(2 kinds), chloro anilines(3 kinds), chloro toluenes(3 kinds), benzyl cholorides(4 kinds), and other comparing samples(3 kinds) were irradiated in the TRIGA Mark-II research reactor and the inorganic $^{38}$ Cl yields were compared with the irradiation times after extracting the inorganic portion with an aqueous solution of alkali. It was found that the relative change between the inorganic $^{38}$ Cl yield and the irradiadiation time depends a great deal on the state of the sample, and a solid sample gave a lower and steady inorganic yield. The inorganic $^{38}$ Cl yield was decreased in the order of phenyl chloro derivatives < chloro tol uene$^{38}$ Cl yield of homo functional compounds and the number of chlorine atoms on the benzene ring. Generally, poly chloro substituted derivatives could give a higher yield than those of less chloro substituted. The results were discussed and the feasibility of these results for labelling purpose was criticized.

  • The thermodynamic parameters for the formation of gadolinium benzoate have been determined in the ionic medium of 0.1 M $NaClO_4$ at $25^{\circ}C$ in aqueous solution. The thermodynamic results indicate that the complex is stabilized by the excess entropy effect caused by the dehydration of reacting ions. The especially high stability of Gd(III)-benzoate compared to the monodentate ligand complexes might be ascribed to the conjugation effect of the benzene ring in the benzoate ligand. IR spectra show that benzoate anion acts as a bidentate ligand toward $Gd^{3+}$ to form a chelate ring in solid state. Magnetic susceptibility data of the compound were also obtained and well described by Curie-Weiss law in the temperature range 80${\sim}$300K.

  • As the surfactants that were used in micellar reaction, emulsion polymerization and phase-transfer reaction etc. have the problems, the cleavable surfactant was converted to inactive compound after such as the reaction in the condition. Because 1, 3-dioxolane ring by ketal or acetal reactioc is lack of stability in acid condition, it is easily made to acid-hydrolysis. And cmc value of the surfactant is assumed $1.0{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$ and surface tension in cmc is 31 dyne/cm. Compared with other surfactant, this surfactant foam property is not better. But emulsion property was relatively good. According as acid-hydrolysis property was observed the interface tension change between aqueous solution and benzene by the variation of pH and time, this surfactant was made to hydrolysis within about 300minutes in pH 1${\sims}$4. Therefore this surfactant is expected to be a good emulsifier that has the bad foam property and the acid-hydrolysis property in acid condition.

Comparative Genomic Analysis and BTEX Degradation Pathways of a Thermotolerant Cupriavidus cauae PHS1

  • Volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and isomers of xylenes (BTEX) constitute a group of monoaromatic compounds that are found in petroleum and have been classified as priority pollutants. In this study, based on its newly sequenced genome, we reclassified the previously identified BTEX-degrading thermotolerant strain Ralstonia sp. PHS1 as Cupriavidus cauae PHS1. Also presented are the complete genome sequence of C. cauae PHS1, its annotation, species delineation, and a comparative analysis of the BTEX-degrading gene cluster. Moreover, we cloned and characterized the BTEX-degrading pathway genes in C. cauae PHS1, the BTEX-degrading gene cluster of which consists of two monooxygenases and meta-cleavage genes. A genome-wide investigation of the PHS1 coding sequence and the experimentally confirmed regioselectivity of the toluene monooxygenases and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase allowed us to reconstruct the BTEX degradation pathway. The degradation of BTEX begins with aromatic ring hydroxylation, followed by ring cleavage, and eventually enters the core carbon metabolism. The information provided here on the genome and BTEX-degrading pathway of the thermotolerant strain C. cauae PHS1 could be useful in constructing an efficient production host.
