The bentwood technique was introduced for the Windsor chair for the first time in the 18th Century. It was Michael Thonet who produced the bentwood chair in Austria around the 1870's, and it has changed the perception of architects and designers since then. The bentwood chair suggested a new and eccentric way of manufacturing furniture and the process of producing materials for it. Moreover, the method of furniture assembling, with screw nails, made a positive contribution not only to the convenience of transport and distribution of furniture to anywhere in the world, but also to the development of mass production of furniture for the multitudes. The bentwood technique of Michael Thonet was developed much further by Alvar Aalto, who inferred a soft curve from nature and developed the beauty of modern laminated bentwood by using birch, a plentiful resource of Finland. This study will help us to understand the functions and process of bentwood furniture, and help to develop technical skills for diverse furniture design. It will also confirm that diverse bentwood furniture design will be possible by applying materials, technical skills and the design process of bentwood according to the characteristics and concept of furniture design.

The First bentwood chairs in the world, called "winsor chairs" were made by British craftsman in the 17th century. Since then, from the start of NO.14 using solid bentwood by 19th-century German Michael Thonet, furniture making techniques such as Bent knee, Y-leg, X-leg- were developed based on Llaminated bentwood made by Alvar Aalto of Finland in the 20th century. In the 20th century Charles Eames of the United States studied Molded plywood, using plywood to produce a variety of furniture and during the 17~20 century a variety of Bentwood were developed. Coming into the 21st century, American Matthias Pliessnig and Phil Seaton worked with past Bentwood designs, developing Bentwood further by adapting Bentwood's know-how and IT technology. Science and technology evolved and Reholz of Germany developed technology which can mold three-dimensional wood using a new matarial called 3D-veneer, In the past only plastic or metal could be moulded 3 dimensional but now beautiful wood grain patterns can be molded by utilizing this technology. Also this is comparable with the past two-dimensional molding technology. In this Sustainable Design techniauses era, Bentwood fused with IT technology has great potential as a high-tech and eco-friendly techniche.

This study was carried out to know bending process property of bentwood by treatment methods such as microwave and ammonia solution treatment. Bentwood processing was operated on bending-jig form with 60mm and 100mm radius of curvature (ROC). The species was used to Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora). No significant difference was shown in bentwood processing method on ROC. In treatment method, ammonia solution treatment for bentwood was better in dimensional stability and working ability than that of microwave treatment. However, bentwood stress was reduced with ammonia solution treatment. Color of bentwood surface appearance has a dark tendency in ammonia solution treatment. But it seems to beautiful effect of apparent annual ring is rising esthetically by ammonia solution treatment. To utilize wood as a exterior material for living amenity, it has to be closely examined from various angles including surface property, degree of swelling and shrinkage, drying state, retaining strength, durability, safety, and insect damage.

This study was carried out to assess the dimensional stability of wood material treated by plastic processing for bentwood and compression wood. The evaluation method was different between two wood materials, but the treatments for them were very similar to each other. One of the main methods is heat treatment with sufficient water vapor. In bentwood, the used species were painted maple (Acer mono), bitter wood (Picrasma quassioides) and birch (Betula schmidtii). Steaming was the worst treatment method for dimensional stabilization of bentwood. The best results could be attained with PEG treatment for dimensional stabilization of bentwood. Dimensional stability of bitter wood was found to be conspicuous. However the steaming treatment at lower temperatures, i.e., about $130^{\circ}C$ was not suitable for dimensional stability of bentwood. In compression wood, the used specimen was Italian poplar wood (Populus euramericana). Two heat compressive pressing conditions, an open-press system and an air-tighten closed-press system, were used. The recovery rate was measured after boiling and/or absorbing in water to estimate the dimensional stability of heat compressed wood. The best dimensional stability of compressed wood in the air-tighten closed-press system was found to be better at $200^{\circ}C$ than $180^{\circ}C$. The best compression rate for dimensional stability was 73 percent.

At researching the history of furniture design, furniture based on the bentwood technique was often seen. There are different bending ways of wood. Among others the steam bending technique had been used since long time, but it's detailed method has been much less studied in Korea yet. The aim of the present study was to investigate the theoretical approach and making ways & process of the steam bending technique, and furthermore to utilize it for the works of the students majoring furniture design. This intends that the steam bending technique will be widely distributed by doing a mock up and it will be diversely used for development of more different furniture designs.

This article was written in order to understand rockers of today and to provide basic data of their designs and manufacture studying pattern changes in the West. This article contains, the characteristics of the style of the Adirondack rockers, the Mission style rockers in America and the European rockers. Adirondack rockers ($1850{\sim}1940$) were made in various styles out of the mingling of rustic sensibilities with the formalism of Victorian designs. They were Old Hickory chair Co. style, Westport style, bentwood rocker style of two shape and Mottville rocker style. Mission style denoted American furniture design style of the early 20th century especially the work of Gustav Stickley and Roycroft Community. Mission style rockers had a simple, rectilinear style with exposed construction techniques, unpretentious materials (usually oak, with covering of leather, canvas or plain cloth) and little or no decoration. European rockers ($1660{\sim}1918$) have come to mean rockers from the English regional chair, Thonet, J&J Kohn, Henry Van de Velde and Hoffmann. The modernism of modern furniture was affected by the characteristics of the Adirondack rockers, the Mission style rockers and European rockers.
