Ontogenetic comparison of larvae and juveniles of Diaphus garmani and Benthosema pterotum (Myctophidae, Pisces) collected from Korea

  • During June 2017, we collected two postflexion larvae (6.01 and 7.56 mm in standard length [SL]) and two juveniles (7.72 and 9.62 mm SL) belonging to Myctophidae in the waters of Jejudo Island. Those four individuals were identified as Diaphus garmani, which had not been reported in Korea. They were distinguished from Benthosema pterotum by melanophores in the abdominal cavity (absent in D. garmani vs. present in B. pterotum) and the development of photophores (developed in D. garmani vs. rudimentary in B. pterotum) when shorter than 10.0 mm SL. Analysis of 16S rRNA sequences showed that the sequences of four individuals matched those of adult D. garmani (Kimura 2-parameter distance: 0.6-0.8%). This is the first record of larvae and juveniles of D. garmani in Korean waters, and we propose a new Korean name, Gar-ma-ni-sat-bi-neul-chi.

Diet Composition of Skinnycheek Lanternfish, Benthosema pterotum in the Coastal Waters of South Sea, Korea (한국 남해에 출현하는 깃비늘치(Benthosema pterotum)의 위내용물 조성)

  • The diet composition of skinnycheek lanternfish, Benthosema pterotum were collected by bottom trawl net in the South Sea of Korea during 2021 (February, May, August, and November) and 2022 (February, April, August, and November). The size of the specimens ranged from 16 to 73 mm in total length. B. pterotum were mesopelagic carnivores that mainly consumed euphausiids and copepods. Its diets included small quantities of amphipods, shrimps, mysids, etc. We calculated the trophic level as 3.16 for B. pterotum. The individuals of small size class (<40 mm) fed mainly on copepods. In the next size classes (40~45 mm, 45~50 mm, 50~55 mm), copepods' proportion decreased and euphausiids increased. In the largest class (55~60 mm and ≥60 mm), the proportion of euphausiids' decreased, and shrimps increased. As the body size of B. pterotum increased the mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST) tended to significantly increase (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

Comparison of Community Structure of Fish Larvae in the Northern East China Sea in Normal and El Niño/La Niña Periods (엘리뇨/라니냐와 정상 기간 동중국해 북부해역의 자치어의 군집구조 비교)

  • The aim of this study was to compare community structure of larval fish species in the northern East China Sea during normal meteorological conditions in autumn 2009, during the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o period in 2009-2010, and during the La Nina period in 2010. Fifty taxa were recorded during the study period; the most dominant species were Benthosema pterotum and Gobiidae spp. In October 2008 during the normal period, warm water from the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) intruded more into the surface and middle layers, and cold water affected by the Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) intruded into the bottom layer. In October 2009 during the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o period, intrusion of the China Coastal Water (CCW), which has low salinity (<32.2 psu), was more apparent than intrusion of the TWC or YSCW. In October 2010 during the La Nina period, intrusion of the TWC and CCW was relatively weak, resulting in the lowest temperature and highest salinity observed during the study period in the eastern part of the study area. Hierarchical cluster, one-way ANOSIM (analysis of similarities), and SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analyses provided two main results. First, the abundance of the most dominant larval fish species in autumn of the normal period was greater than that in autumn of the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Nina periods, resulting in a significant difference in ichthyoplankton community structure between the periods. The abundance of Benthosema pterotum increased in the normal period, possibly influenced by the intrusion of cold water from the YSCW; the abundance of species residing in Korean waters (e.g., Gobiidae spp.) probably decreased during the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Nina periods. The second finding was that the abundance of subtropical larval fish in autumn of the normal period was generally larger than that during autumn of the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Nina periods. This could have been induced by the stronger intrusion of warm water from the TWC during the normal period. Although differences in oceanographic conditions between El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Nina periods were observed, the differences in ichthyoplankton community structure between the two periods were not significant.

Studies on the Fish Larvae Community in the Sea Around Cheju Island in November, 1986 (제주도 주변 해역의 치자어 군집에 관한 연구-가을철)

  • Fish larvae and environmental variables were collected in the sea around Cheju Island of Korea in November, 1986. Fish larvae were found at the 43 of 44 stations. Abundance of fish larvae rangεd from 3 to 259 indiv./$10^3\;m^3$ (average 50 indiv./$10^3\;m^3$) Dominant species were Engraulis japonicus, Champsodon snyderi, Gobiidae, Sebastiscus marmoratus, and Synagrops philippinensis, which comprised 56.6% of total fish larvae abundance. 43 stations were c1assified into two groups by c1uster analysis based on the abundance of fish taxa. Most stations of Group I were located in the middle reach of Tsushima Current and had higher number of species and abundance than the sites of Group II which cover the marginal areas of Tsushima Current, Korean Coastal Waters, and coastal water of China. The dominant taxa in the sites of the Group I were E. japonicus, Gobiidae, S. philippinensis, Aulops japonicus, Bregmaceros spp., Benthosema pterotum, Lampanctus spp., etc., all of which are typical warm-water species. Therefore, Tsushima Current seems to be the most critical factor regulating the structure of fish larvae community in the study area. The discriminant analysis using the environmenta1 variables (temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) produced result with a difference only of 11.6% from that of c1uster analysis using the taxa composition and abundance data. Consequently, the structural type of fish larvae community can be used for predicting the changes of environmental conditions in the study area.

  • Two juvenile (9.48 and 10.11 mm in standard length) specimens of the lanternfish Notoscopelus japonicus, belonging to the family Myctophidae, were collected from the waters around Busan and Jeju Island in February 2017. This species is characterized by having melanophores along the dorsal side of the body and one photophore (PO5) in front of the pelvic fin. It is distinguished from Benthosema pterotum in having many melanophores on the dorsal side and a single photophore (PO5) on the trunk. N. japonicus is also distinguished from its congeneric N. resplendens and N. caudispinosus in having no melanophores at the base of the anal fin. Analyzing 521 base pairs of the 16S rRNA sequence, the specimens were identical to N. japonicus adults from Japan (K2P distance <0.004). This is the first record of N. japonicus in Korea, and we propose a new Korean name "Deung-jum-saet-bi-neul-chi" for this species.

Diet Composition of the Mirror Dory, Zenopsis nebulosa in the South Sea, Korea (한국 남해에서 출현하는 민달고기(Zenopsis nebulosa)의 위내용물 조성)

  • Zenopsis nebulosa were collected by bottom trawl net from 20 areas in the South Sea of Korea during 2021 (February, May, August, November). The range of total length was 10.1~50.2 cm and empty stomach rate was 45.8%. The most important prey of Z. nebulosa was Pisces, with Trichiurus japonicus, Trachurus japonicus and Benthosema pterotum. And the second important prey was Euphausiacea. Z. nebulosa showed dietary shift by size class. In the <20.0 cm size class, Trachurus japonicus was dominant prey item. In the 20.0~25.0 cm size class, Trichiurus japonicus was dominant prey item. In the ≥25.0 cm size class, B. pterotum was dominant prey item. Analysis of the mean weight of preys per stomach (mW/ST) increased with individual size.
