  • We herein propose a new design procedure of a flexible container ship model where the vertical bending and torsional vibration modes are similar to its prototype. To achieve similarity in torsional vibration mode shapes, the height of the shear center of the model must be located below the bottom hull, similar to an actual container ship with large opening decks. Therefore, we designed a ship model by imparting appropriate stiffness to the hull, using urethane foam without a backbone. We built a container ship model according to this design strategy and validated its dynamic elastic properties using a decay test. We measured wave-induced structural vibrations and present the results of tank experiments in regular and freak waves.

  • PURPOSES: SUPERPAVE binder grade tests including Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery(MSCR) test are applied to evaluate rheological properties of four polymer modified binders. METHODS: To evaluate grade of four modified binders, PG testing protocols, such as DSR, BBR and MSCR are employed. RESULTS: It is observed that MSCR test shows different performance grades especially on modified binders. Both DMP and EG binder show similar high temperature performance to SBS 5% modified binder. CONCLUSIONS: Binder Grading system in Korea need to be reviewed to properly reflect the performnace of modified binders. The binders modified with DMP and EG can be possible alternatives SBS 5% modified binder considering its performance and cost.

  • Steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) L-shaped column is the vertical load-bearing member with high spatial adaptability. The seismic behavior of SRC L-shaped column is complex because of their irregular cross sections. In this study, the hysteretic performance of six steel truss reinforced concrete L-shaped columns specimens under the combined loading of compression, bending, shear, and torsion was tested. There were two parameters, i.e., the moment ratio of torsion to bending (γ) and the aspect ratio (column length-to-depth ratio (φ)). The failure process, torsion-displacement hysteresis curves, and bending-displacement hysteresis curves of specimens were obtained, and the failure patterns, hysteresis curves, rigidity degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation were analyzed. The experimental research indicates that the failure mode of the specimen changes from bending failure to bending-shear failure and finally bending-torsion failure with the increase of γ. The torsion-displacement hysteresis curves were pinched in the middle, formed a slip platform, and the phenomenon of "load drop" occurred after the peak load. The bending-displacement hysteresis curves were plump, which shows that the bending capacity of the specimen is better than torsion capacity. The results show that the steel truss reinforced concrete L-shaped columns have good collapse resistance, and the ultimate interstory drift ratio more than that of the Chinese Code of Seismic Design of Building (GB50011-2014), which is sufficient. The average value of displacement ductility coefficient is larger than rotation angle ductility coefficient, indicating that the specimen has a better bending deformation resistance. The specimen that has a more regular section with a small φ has better potential to bear bending moment and torsion evenly and consume more energy under a combined action.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cyclic behavior of steel column-tree moment connections used in steel moment resisting frames. These connections are composed of shop-welded stub beam-to-column connection and field bolted beam-to-beam splice. In this study, the effects of beam splice length on the seismic performance of column-tree connections were experimentally investigated. The change of the beam splice location alters the bending moment and shear force at the splice, and this may affect the seismic performance of column-tree connections. Three full-scale test specimens of column-tree connections with the splice lengths of 900 mm, 1,100 mm, and 1,300 mm were fabricated and tested. The splice lengths were roughly 1/6, 1/7, 1/8 of the beam span length of 7,500 mm, respectively. The test results showed that all the specimens successfully developed ductile behavior without brittle fracture until 5% radians story drift angle. The maximum moment resisting capacity of the specimens showed little differences. The specimen with the splice length of 1,300 mm showed better bolt slip resistance than the other specimens due to the smallest bending moment at the beam splice.

  • Nanoskins were fabricated on a Ti-6Al-4V material by carrying out various surface treatments, i.e., deep rolling, laser shot peening, and ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM). These surface treatments are newly developed techniques and are becoming more popular for industrial applications. Fatigue tests were carried out using material test system (MTS); these tests included the axial loading tension-compression fatigue test (R = -1, RT, 5 Hz, sinusoidal wave) and rotating bending fatigue test (R = -1, RT, 3200 rpm). The analysis of the crack initiation pattern in the UNSM-treated material indicated that the crack was interior originating in the axial loading tension-compression cycle, and was surface originating in the bending fatigue test. UNSM treatment significantly improved the fatigue strength for the regime of above $10^6$ cycles that S-N curve of rotating bending stress clearly show the performance of a 5 mm titanium specimen after UNSM treatment is similar to that of an untreated 6 mm titanium specimen.

  • In this study, flexible supercapacitor based on the all solid state electrolyte with PVA (polyvinyl alcohol)-$H_3PO_4$, ionic liquid as a BMIMBF4 (1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) and reduced graphene oxide/conductive polymer composite was fabricated and characterized electrochemical properties with function of its flexibility. In order to measure and compare that electrochemical performances (including cyclic voltammetry(CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and galvanostatic charge/discharge,after 0~100th bending test) of prepared flexible supercapacitor based on reduced graphene oxide/conducting polymer composite and all solid state electrolyte, we have conducted press machine with constant pressure ( 0.01/cm2) for $100^{th}$ bending test. As a result, specific capacitance of the flexible supercapacitor was 43.9 F/g which value decreased to 42.0 and 40.1 F/g after 50 and $100^{th}$ bending test, respectively. This result exhibited that decreased electrochemical property of the flexible supercapacitor effected on physical stress on the electrode after repeated bending test. In addition, we have measured that electrode surface morphology by SEM to prove its decreased electrochemical property of the flexible supercapacitor after prolonged bending test.

  • The impacts of waste tire rubber (WTR) on the bending conduct of reinforced concrete beams (RCBs) are investigated in visualization of experimental tests and 3D finite element model (FEM) using both ANSYS and SAP2000. Several WTR rates are used in total 4 various full scale RCBs to observe the impact of WTR rate on the rupture and bending conduct of RCBs. For this purpose, the volumetric ratios (Vf) of WTR were chosen to change to 0%, 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% in the whole concrete. In relation to experimental test consequences, bending and rupture behaviors of the RCBs are observed. The best performance among the beams was observed in the beams with 2.5% WTR. Furthermore, as stated by test consequences, it is noticed that while WTR rate in the RCBs is improved, max. bending in the RCBs rises. For test consequences, it is clearly recognized as WTR rate in the RCB mixture is improved from 0% to 2.5%, deformation value in the RCB remarkably rises from 3.89 cm to 7.69 cm. This consequence is markedly recognized that WTR rates have a favorable result on deformation values in the RCBs. Furthermore, experimental tests are compared to 3D FEM consequences via using ANSYS software. In the ANSYS, special element types are formed and nonlinear multilinear misses plasticity material model and bilinear misses plasticity material model are chosen for concrete and compression and tension elements. As a consequence, it is noticed that each WTR rates in the RCBs mixture have dissimilar bending and rupture impacts on the RCBs. Then, to observe the impacts of WTR rate on the constructions under near-fault ground motions, a reinforced-concrete building was modelled via using SAP2000 software using 3-D model of the construction to complete nonlinear static analysis. Beam, column, steel haunch elements are modeled as nonlinear frame elements. Consequently, the seismic impacts of WTR rate on the lateral motions of each floor are obviously investigated particularly. Considering reduction in weight of structure and capacity of the members with using waste tire rubber, 2.5% of WTR resulted in the best performance while the construction is subjected to near fault earthquakes. Moreover, it is noticeably recognized that WTR rate has opposing influences on the seismic displacement behavior of the RC constructions.

  • In this study, we propose a new truss deckplate system, which does not require temporary floor supports during construction, with ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) infilled top bars. The increased stiffness and strength of the proposed system were well retained as compared to those of the existing truss deckplate systems, thereby resulting in the reduction of maximum deflection at the span center. Four-point bending tests were performed on five specimens with a net span of 4.6 m to evaluate the structural performance of proposed system in the construction stage. In addition, the load-deflection curve was plotted for each specimen, and the effects of test parameters were analyzed. Further, a rigorous nonlinear three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed, and its results were compared with the test results. From the results, it was observed that the test specimens of the proposed system exhibited superior performance as compared to those of the existing one and also satisfied the serviceability requirement during construction provided by the Korea Building Code 2016.

  • A spray-on membrane is a material composed of a polymer, and is a spray-type material that is expected to be able to replace materials such as existing shotcrete or sheet membrane for support or waterproofing purposes. In the previous studies, it is expected that the thickness of the support material such as shotcrete can be reduced if the spray-on membrane is additionally installed on the existing cement-based support materials. In this study, a three-point bending test was performed by a spray-on membrane on the high-performance shotcrete on the outside, and comparison was made between the case where high-performance shotcrete and a spray-on membrane were installed. As a result of comparing the values calculated through the standard test and the real-size bending test, there was no significant difference in terms of flexural strength, but it was found that there was a difference in flexural toughness.

  • In this study, the seismic performance of connections between filled composite beam (CG beams) and forming angle composite (FAC) column was experimentally evaluated. First, the bending tests were conducted on two CG beams and the axial tests were conducted on two FAC columns. Then, based on these preliminary test results, the cyclic loading test were performed on two interior connections between CG beam and FAC column. The main difference of two specimens is the plate shape of the CG beam. The test results showed that both specimens achieved the maximum story drift capacity over 0.04 radian which is required for special moment frame.
