The thermal deformation of a workpiece during grinding is one of the most important factors that affect a flatness of a grinding surface. The heat generated in one-pass surface grinding causes the convex deformation of a workpiece. Therefore, the ground surface represents a conacve profile. In the analysis a simple model of the temperature distribution, based on the result of a finite element method, is applied. The analyzed results are compared with experimental results in surface grinding. The main results obtained are as follows; (1) The temperature distibution of a workpiece by FEM is comparatively in good agreement with the experimental results. (2) The bending moment by generated heat cause a convex deformation of the workpiece and it reads to a concave profile of the grinding surface.
Connections with damage concentrated to pre-selected components can enhance seismic resilience for moment resisting frames. These pre-selected components always yield early to dissipate energy, and their energy dissipation mechanisms vary from one to another, depending on their position in the connection, geometry configuration details, and mechanical characteristics. This paper presents behaviour insights on two types of beam-to-beam connections that the angles were designed as energy dissipation components, through the results of experimental study and finite element analysis. Firstly, an experimental programme was reviewed, and key responses concerning the working mechanism of the connections were presented, including strain distribution at the critical section, section force responses of essential components, and initial stiffness of test specimens. Subsequently, finite element models of three specimens were established to further interpret their behaviour and response that were not observable in the tests. The moment and shear force transfer paths of the composite connections were clarified through the test results and finite element analysis. It was observed that the bending moment is mainly resisted by axial forces from the components, and the dominant axial force is from the bottom angles; the shear force at the critical section is primarily taken by the slab and the components near the top flange. Lastly, based on the insights on the load transfer path of the composite connections, preliminary design recommendations are proposed. In particular, a resistance requirement, quantified by a moment capacity ratio, was placed on the connections. Design models and equations were also developed for predicting the yield moment resistance and the shear resistance of the connections. A flexible beam model was proposed to quantify the shear resistance of essential components.
There are constraints on truck weight, axle configurations and size imposed by departments of transportation around the globe due to structural capacity limitations of highway pavements and bridges. In spite of that, freight movers demand some vehicles that surpass the maximum size and legal weight limits to use the transportation network. Oversized trucks serve the purpose of spreading the load on the bridge; thus, reducing the load effect on the superstructure. For such vehicles, often a quick structural analysis of the existing bridges along the traveled route is needed to ensure that the structural capacity is not exceeded. For a wide vehicle having wheel gage larger than the standard 1830 mm, the girder distribution factors in the design specifications cannot be directly used to estimate the live load in the supporting girders. In this study, a simple approach that is based on finite element analysis is developed by modifying the AASHTO LRFD's girder distribution factors for slab-on-steel-girder bridges to overcome this problem. The proposed factors allow for determining the oversized vehicle bending moment and shear force effect in the individual girders as a function of the gage width characteristics. Findings of the study showed that the relationship between the girder distribution factor and gage width is more nonlinear in shear than in flexure. The proposed factors yield reasonable results compared with the finite element analysis with adequate level of conservatism.
In recent years, CFRP material usage in strengthening applications gradually became widespread. Especially, the studies on the strengthening of shear deficient reinforced concrete beams with CFRP strips are chosen as a subject to numerous experimental studies and research on this subject are increased rapidly. The most important variable, that is affected on the failure mode of CFRP strips and that is needed for determining the shear capacity of the strengthened reinforced concrete beams, is the strain distribution between CFRP strips and concrete. Numerous experimental studies are encountered in the literature about the determination of strain distribution between CFRP strips and concrete. However, these studies mainly focused on the CFRP strips under axial tension. There are very limited numbers of experimental and analytic studies examining the strain distribution between concrete and CFRP strips, which are under combined stresses due to the effects of shear force and bending moment. For this reason, existing experimental study in the literature is used as model for ANSYS finite element software. Nonlinear finite element analysis of RC beams strengthened against shear with CFRP strips under reverse cyclic loading is performed. The strain distributions between CFRP strips and concrete that is obtained from finite element analysis are compared with the results of experimental measurements. It is seen that the experimental results are consisted with the results derived from the finite element analysis and important findings on the strain distribution profile are reached by obtaining strain values of many points using finite element method.

Material flaws in the from of pre-existing defects can severely affect the crack initiation. Stress distribution and crack initiation life of engineering materials such as monolithic aluminum alloy and Al/Glass fiber laminate may be different according to the defect location. The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of relative location of defects around the circular hole in monolithic aluminum and Al/Glass fiber laminates under cyclic bending moment. Stress distribution and crack initiation behavior near a circular hole are considered. Results of Finite Element (FE) model indicated the features of different stress field due to the relative defects positions. Especially, the defects positions at ${\theta}=0^{\circ}\;and\;{\theta}=30^{\circ}$ was strongly effective in stress concentration factor ($K_t$) and crack initiation behavior.

This study analyzed the effect of performance connected-type foundations of behavior and the connected beams according to the characteristics into soft clay transmission tower foundation. For this purpose, the finite element analysis model was built and connected to the transmission tower foundation mat and the contact area of the connection beam by the percentage change in the behavior and resistance characteristics were analyzed and finite element verification of the validity of the analytical model was conducted using connected-type transmission tower results of the model experiments constructed, and effective connected-type transmission tower basis of the behavior of connected beams were selected by analyzing the effect due to the increase of the stiffness. In addition, weak analysis by connected beam self-bending moment distribution was conducted.
The load distribution and deformation of pile-bent structures are investigated using a numerical study. A numerical analysis that takes into account the effects of varying cross-sectional area was performed for different pier diameters, loading steps, and soil conditions. Through the comparison study, it is shown that the location of maximum bending moment is almost the same per each loading step, regardless of varying cross-sections. However, the member force (i.e., stress of pile material) has the largest value at the ground surface when the cross-section is changed. Based on the results obtained, it is found that the location of maximum member force influences highly the behavior of pile-bent structure with varying cross-sections for repair works.

In this study, a statistical method for evaluating the fatigue life of a vehicle muffler was used to obtain reliable fatigue data using a limited number of specimens. Cyclic bending tests were conducted using specimens manufactured to be exactly the same as the mufflers installed in cars that are currently in use. To estimate the fatigue life by comparing the data obtained during the fatigue tests, the most suitable probability density function for the normal, lognormal, and Weibull distributions was selected. A goodness-of-fit test was performed on the probability distributions, and then a Weibull distribution using the least square method was selected. By using the selected Weibull distribution, the probability-moment-life curves (P-M-N curve) reflecting the fatigue characteristics were suggested as the data for the reliable design of a muffler.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of high-rise reinforced concrete (RC) box-type wall structures commonly used for most residential buildings in Korea. For this purpose, an analytical model was calibrated with the results of the earthquake simulation tests on a 1:5 scale 10-story distorted model. This calibrated model was then transformed to a true model. The performance of the true model in terms of the stiffness, strength, and damage distribution through inelastic energy dissipation was observed with reference to the earthquake simulation test results. The model showed high overstrength factors ranging from 3 to 4. The existence of slab in this box-type wall system changed the main resistance mode in the wall from bending moment to tension/compression coupled moment through membrane actions, and increased the overall resistance capacity by about 25~35%, in comparison with the common design practice of neglecting the slab's existence. The flexibility of foundation, which is also commonly neglected in the engineering design, contributes to 30~50% of the roof drift in the stiff direction containing many walls. The possibility of concrete spalling and reinforcement buckling and fracture under the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) in Korea appears to be very low when compared with the case of the 2010 Concepcion, Chile earthquake.
The major objective of this paper is to evaluate the behavior and ultimate resisting capacity of circular CFT columns. To consider the confinement effect, proper material models with respect to the confinement pressure are selected. A fiber section approach is adopted to simulate the nonlinear stress distribution along the section depth. Material nonlinearity due to the cracking of concrete and the yielding of the surrounding steel tube, as well as geometric nonlinearity due to the P-${\Delta}$ effect, are taken into account. The validity of the proposed numerical analysis model is established by comparing the analytical predictions with the results from previous experimental studies about pure bending and eccentric axial loading. Numerical predictions using an unconfined material model were also compared to investigate the confinement effects on various loading combinations. The ultimate resisting capacities predicted by the proposed numerical model and the design guidelines in Eurocode 4 are compared to evaluate the existing design recommendation.
