The purpose of this study was to investigate stresses in the various components of fixed partial dentures restoring the posterior teeth of the lower jaw, and to measure quantitatively the effects of certain modifications in structural design on the stresses in the restorations using two-dimensional photoelasticity. Two-dimensional photoelastic methods were used in this study. Several models of fixed partial dentures were constructed. Shoulder less margins and anatomic occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 1. Rounded shoulders and flat occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 2, while Model 3 was a cantilever fixed partial denture. Other similar fixed partial dentures were constructed with V and U notches deliverately included in the region of the fixed joints for comparative reasons. The birefringent materials used in this study were PSM-1 and PSM-5 in standard sheets. PSM-1 was used for constructing the substructure, and PSM-5 was used in making the components of the fixed partial dentures. The two materials were used in the construction of composite photoelastic models. Improved artificial stone was used to represent dental cement in luting the composite photoelastic models. Static loading procedures were used at preplanned sites to represent occlusal loads in the mouth. 35 mm color and B/W film were used to record isochromatics in accordance with photoelastic procedures. Data reduction was performed using the grid method, which helped in, the mathematical integration procedure (Shear difference method) to separate the principal stresses. The results were as follows. 1. Fixed partial dentures do not function in bending as a symmetrical beam. Alternate areas of tension and compression were demonstrated when multiple contact loading was used. 2. The weakest part in posterior fixed partial dentures is the fixed joint. 3. (1) Models I and modified Model I were loaded on the pontic using a 50 pound vertical static load. The shear stress near the posterior fixed joint in Model 1 (U notches) was+129.4 p.s.i., and at the same fixed joint in modified Model 1 (V notches) was+239.4 p.s.i. The concentration of stress in fixed joint was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. (2) Modified Model 2 was loaded using a multiple contact loader at a total load of 125 pounds. The difference between the principal stresses (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_2$), shear stress, at the V notches was+600 p.s.i., and at the U notches was+3l7 p.s.i. The shear stress was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. V-grooves at the fixed joints should be avoided, and should be replaced by regular shaped U-grooves. 4. Cantilever fixed partial dentures had much higher stresses at the fixed joint than fixed partial dentures that were attached at both ends.
This study assessed the effects of treatment with sap extract from onion residues postharvest and purslane on the quality and quantity of organic onions. At the bending stage, onions treated with the sap extract showed vigorous growth, with higher plant heights, more leaves, and longer sheath lengths than untreated onions. The onion yield was significantly increased when the plant was treated with extracted sap as compared with that of untreated plants (p<0.05). The bulb weight distribution of onions in the mixed onion and purslane treatment was also significantly increased (~300 g) as compared with that of the other treatment (p<0.05). Except for CaO and S, the mineral content of the onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract mixture was higher than those of onions in the other treatment. The hardness of onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract was significantly increased (8% and 20%, respectively) as compared with that of onions produced from plants treated with the onion extract only or no treatment (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the sugar contents of the onions produced from extract-treated and nonextract-treated plants. Postharvest, the content of inorganic components (phosphate, calcium, sulfuric acid, and manganese) was higher in soil treated with the onion extract than in soil treated with the onion and purslane extract and non-treated soil. It can be concluded that residues left after onion harvests and purslane extract can be used as natural and environmentally friendly materials for the cultivation of organic onions.
Even though the cost associated with the repair and rehabilitation of existing structures are rapidly increasing, vast number of the repaired and rehabilitated structures do not function properly as expected during their remaining service lives. This paper focused on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete slabs repaired and reinforced by PS strand and polymer mortar in the tension face. The slabs have the size of 700${\times}120{\times}$2200 m and 700${\times}120{\times}$1300 mm. Variables of experiment were space of strengthening, chipping, the number of strand, the kind of mortar in this experimental study. Attention is concentrated upon overall bending capacity, deflection, ductility and failure mode of repaired and reinforced slabs. Test results show that deflection of repaired and reinforced slabs reduced to approximately $40 \%$ comparison to standard slabs. Boundary cracking of chipping slab started ultimate load afterward. Concrete-mortar interface cracked 64.5 kN in repaired slab with AP mortar and 36.0 kN in repaired slab with general polymer mortar. Reinforcement effect increased with reducing space of strand. Also, Reinforcement effects are more by strand than by polymer mortar.
The present work dealt with the high temperature thermal shock properties of 316 stainless steels, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of their microstructures. In particular, the effects of the thermal shock temperature difference and thermal shock cycle number on the properties of 316 stainless steels were investigated. A thermal shock test for 316 stainless steel was carried out at thermal shock temperature differences from $300^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. The cyclic thermal shock test for the 316 stainless steel was performed at a thermal shock temperature difference of $700^{\circ}C$ up to 100 cycles. The characterization of 316 stainless steels was evaluated using an optical microscope and a three-point bending test. Both the microstructure and flexural strength of 316 stainless steels were affected by the high-temperature thermal shock. The flexural strength of 316 stainless steels gradually increased with an increase in the thermal shock temperature difference, accompanied by a growth in the grain size of the microstructure. However, a thermal shock temperature difference of $800^{\circ}C$ produced a decrease in the flexural strength of the 316 stainless steel because of damage to the material surface. The properties of 316 stainless steels greatly depended on the thermal shock cycle number. In other words, the flexural strength of 316 stainless steels decreased with an increase in the thermal shock cycle number, accompanied by a linear growth in the grain size of the microstructure. In particular, the 316 stainless steel had a flexural strength of about 500 MPa at 100 thermal-shock cycles, which corresponded to about 80% of the strength of the as-received materials.
In this study, the fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ of high performance concrete (HPC) was investigated by conducting three-point bending tests on a total of 240 notched beams of $500mm{\times}100mm{\times}100mm$ subjected to heating temperatures up to $450^{\circ}C$ with exposure times up to 16 hours and various heating and cooling rates. For a heating rate of $3^{\circ}C/min$, $K_{IC}$ for the hot concrete sustained a monotonic decrease trend with the increasing heating temperature and exposure time, from $1.389MN/m^{1.5}$ at room temperature to $0.942MN/m^{1.5}$ at $450^{\circ}C$ for 4-hour exposure time, $0.906MN/m^{1.5}$ for 8-hour exposure time and $0.866MN/m^{1.5}$ for 16-hour exposure time. For the cold concrete, $K_{IC}$ sustained a two-stage decrease trend, dropping slowly with the heating temperature up to $150^{\circ}C$ and then rapidly down to $0.869MN/m^{1.5}$ at $450^{\circ}C$ for 4-hour exposure time, $0.812MN/m^{1.5}$ for 8-hour exposure time and $0.771MN/m^{1.5}$ for 16-hour exposure time. In general, the $K_{IC}$ values for the hot concrete up to $200^{\circ}C$ were larger than those for the cold concrete, and an inverse trend was observed thereafter. The increase in heating rate slightly decreased $K_{IC}$, and at $450^{\circ}C$$K_{IC}$ decreased from $0.893MN/m^{1.5}$ for $1^{\circ}C/min$ to $0.839MN/m^{1.5}$ for $10^{\circ}C/min$ for the hot concrete and from $0.792MN/m^{1.5}$ for $1^{\circ}C/min$ to $0.743MN/m^{1.5}$ for $10^{\circ}C/min$ for the cold concrete after an exposure time of 16 hours. The increase in cooling rate also slightly decreased $K_{IC}$, and at $450^{\circ}C$$K_{IC}$ decreased from $0.771MN/m^{1.5}$ for slow cooling to $0.739MN/m^{1.5}$ for fast cooling after an exposure time of 16 hours. The fracture energy-based fracture toughness $K_{IC}$' was also assessed, and similar decrease trends with the heating temperature and exposure time existed for both hot and cold concretes. The relationships of two fracture toughness parameters with the weight loss and the modulus of rapture were also evaluated.

It is important to measure the quantitative adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend. In measuring the adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend, the effect of the kind and thickness of the adherend on the adhesive strength was studied. Two kinds of metal adherends were selected, aluminum (Al1050) and stainless steel (STS304), and a dolly test and a lap shear test were used to measure the adhesive strength. When measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the tensile stress mode of dolly test, the change in the thickness of the metal adherend had little effect on the adhesive strength, however, the adhesive strength was different depending on the kind of the adherend. On the other hand, when measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the lap shear test, the change in the relative thickness of the metal adherend had an effect on the adhesive strength. The reason is that the bending phenomenon of the adherend occurring in the edge of bonding region during the lap shear test contributes to lowering the adhesive strength by generating additional tensile stress in the bonding region. From this work, it is concluded that the dolly test could be widely used when measuring the quantitative adhesive strength of organic adhesives and metal adherend because there is little change in adhesive strength even though the thickness of the adherend is changed.

In this paper, a multi-scale finite element (FE) modeling methodology for three-dimensional (3D) needle-punched (NP) C/SiC with a complex microstructure is presented. The variations of the material properties induced by the needle-punching process and complex geometrical features could pose challenges when estimating the material behavior. For considering these features of composites, a 3D microscopic FE approach is introduced based on micro-CT technology to produce a 3D high fidelity FE model. The image processing techniques of micro-CT are utilized to generate discrete-gray images and reconstruct the high fidelity model. Furthermore, a subcell modeling technique is developed for the 3D NP C/SiC based on the high fidelity FE model to expand to the macro-scale structural problem. A numerical homogenization approach under periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) is employed to estimate the equivalent behavior of the high fidelity model and effective properties of subcell components, considering geometry continuity effects. For verification, proposed models compare excellently with experimental results for the mechanical behavior of tensile, shear, and bending under static loading conditions.

We have demonstrated a sandwich-type ZnO-based piezoelectric energy harvesting nanogenerator, namely ZCZ-NG device, composed of symmetrically stacked layers of ZnO/carbon tape/ZnO structure. Especially, we have adopted a conductive double-sided adhesive carbon tape in an effort to fabricate a high-quality ZCZ-NG device, leading to its superior output performance in terms of the peak-to-peak output voltage. Effects of the device size, ZnO layer thickness, and bending strain rate on the device performance have been investigated by measuring the output voltage. Moreover, to evaluate the effectiveness of the fabricated ZCZ-NG devices, we have experimentally implemented a sensor network testbed which can utilize the output voltages of ZCZ-NG devices. This sensor network testbed consists of several components such as Arduino-based transmitter and receiver nodes, wirelessly transmitting the sensed information of each node. We hope that this research combining the ZnO-based energy harvesting devices and IoT sensor networks will contribute to the development of more advanced energy harvester-driven IoT sensor networks in the future.

The use of flames is essential in cutting, bending, and welding steel during a ship's construction process. While acetylene fuel is commonly used in steel cutting and the manufacturing process in shipyards, the use of propane as an alternative fuel has recently been increasing, due to the lower risk of explosion and propane's relatively low calorific value. However, propane fuel has a relatively slow processing speed and high slag generation frequency, thereby resulting in poor quality. Propylene is another alternative fuel, which has an excellent calorific value. It is expected to gain wider use because of its potential to improve the quality, productivity, and efficiency of steel processing. In this study, the combustion characteristics of propane and propylene fuel during steel plate processing were analyzed and compared. The reduction of greenhouse gases and other harmful gases when using propylene flame was experimentally verified by analyzing the gases emitted during the process. Heat distribution and tensile tests were also performed to investigate the effects of heat input, according to processing fuel used, on the mechanical strength of the marine steel. The results showed that when propylene was used, the temperature was more evenly distributed than when propane fuel was used. Moreover, the mechanical tests showed that when using propylene, there was no decrease in tensile strength, but the strain showed a tendency to decrease. Based on the study results, it is recommended that propylene be used in steel processing and the cutting process in actual shipyards in the future. Additionally, more analysis and supplementary research should be conducted on problems that may occur.
