Brillouin backscatter is a type of reflection that occurs when light is shone into an optical fibre. Brillouin reflections are very sensitive to changes in the fibre arising from external effects, such as temperature, strain and pressure. We report here several case studies on the measurement of strain using Brillouin reflections. A mechanical bending test of an I beam, deployed with both fiber optic sensors and conventional strain gauge rosettes, was performed with the aim of evaluating: (1) the capability and technical limit of the DTSS technology for strain profile sensing; (2) the reliability of strain measurement using fiber optic sensor. The average values of strains obtained from both DTSS and strain gauges (corresponding to the deflection of I beam) showed a linear relationship and an excellent one-to-one match. A practical application of DTSS technology as an early warning system for land sliding or subsidence was examined through a field test at a hillside. Extremely strong, lightweight, rugged, survivable tight-buffered cables, designed for optimal strain transfer to the fibre, were used and clamped on the subsurface at a depth of about 50cm. It was proved that DTSS measurements could detect the exact position and the progress of strain changes induced by land sliding and subsidence. We also carried out the first ever distributed dynamic strain measurement (10Hz) on the Korean Train eXpress(KTX) railway track in Daejeon, Korea. The aim was to analyse the integrity of a section of track that had recently been repaired. The Sensornet DTSS was used to monitor this 85m section of track while a KTX train passed over. In the repaired section the strain increases to levels of 90 microstrain, whereas in the section of regular track the strain is in the region of 30-50 microstrain. The results were excellent since they demonstrate that the DTSS is able to measure small, dynamic changes in strain in rails during normal operating conditions. The current 10km range of the DTSS creates a potential to monitor the integrity of large lengths of track, and especially higher risk sections such as bridges, repaired track and areas at risk of subsidence.

This work reports results of our study on the dynamic responses of the buried pipelines both along the axial and the transverse directions under various boundary end conditions. We have considered three cases, i.e., the free ends, the fixed ends, and the fixed-free ends for the axial direction, and three more cases including the guided ends, the simply supported ends, and the supported-guided ends for the transverse direction. In order to investigate the effect of the boundary end conditions for the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline, we have devised a computer program to find the solutions of the formulae on the dynamic responses (displacements, axial strains, and bending strains) under the various boundary end conditions considered in this study. The dynamic behavior of the buried pipelines for the forced vibration is found to exhibit two different forms, a transient response and a steady state response, depending on the time before and after the transfer of a seismic wave on the end of the buried pipeline. The former is identified by a slight change in its behavior before the sinusoidal-shaped seismic wave travels along the whole length of the pipeline whereas the latter by the complete form of a sinusoidal wave when the wave travels throughout the pipeline. The transient response becomes insignificant as the wave speed increases. We have observed a resonance when the mode wavelength matches the wavelength of the seismic wave, where the mode number(k) of resonance for the axial direction is found to be $\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V+1/2$ for the fixed-free ends, $\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V+1$ for the free ends, and $\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V$ for the fixed ends, respectively. By adding 10 more modes to the mode number(k) of resonance, we were able to study all the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline for the axial direction. On the other hand, we have not been able to observe a resonance in the analysis for the transverse direction, because the dynamic responses are found to vanish after the seventh mode. From the results of the dynamic responses at the many points of the pipeline, we have found that the responses appeared to be dependent critically on the boundary end conditions. Such effects are found to be most prominent especially for the maximum values of the displacement and the strain and its position.

The effects of Ru deposition temperature and post-annealing conditions on the interfacial adhesion energies of atomic layer deposited (ALD) Ru diffusion barrier layer and Cu thin films for the advanced Cu interconnects applications were systematically investigated. The initial interfacial adhesion energies were 8.55, 9.37, $8.96J/m^2$ for the sample deposited at 225, 270, and $310^{\circ}C$, respectively, which are closely related to the similar microstructures and resistivities of Ru films for ALD Ru deposition temperature variations. And the interfacial adhesion energies showed the relatively stable high values over $7.59J/m^2$ until 250h during post-annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, while dramatically decreased to $1.40J/m^2$ after 500 h. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy Cu 2p peak separation analysis showed that there exists good correlation between the interfacial adhesion energy and the interfacial CuO formation. Therefore, ALD Ru seems to be a promising diffusion barrier candidate with reliable interfacial reliability for advanced Cu interconnects.
Structural characteristics for standard models of single-span plastic greenhouse in Korea and high tunnels in North America were analyzed, and comparative analysis for greenhouse environments measuring in Korean farmhouse and Rutgers high tunnel was carried out to find structural and environmental improvements of single-span plastic greenhouses that occupy most of Korean greenhouse. Widths of high tunnels are similar to single-span plastic greenhouses but their heights are high comparatively and their side heights are fairly higher than single-span plastic greenhouses specially. Rafters, which are main frames, section sizes of high tunnels are bigger and their intervals are wider than single-span plastic greenhouses. Relative bending resistances compared with representative Korean greenhouse were analyzed by 0.92 to 1.42 in single-span plastic greenhouses, and 1.38 to 2.96 in high tunnels. Frame ratios of single-span plastic greenhouses were 6.8 to 8.6%, and those of high tunnels were 5.5 to 8.7%. We analyzed air temperatures and solar radiations measured in single-span plastic greenhouse and high tunnel on clear days in late March. There were outside temperatures in generally similar range, and judging by rise of indoor temperatures, ventilation performance of high tunnel is more excellent than single-span plastic greenhouse. Solar radiations of two areas were no big difference but light transmittance of high tunnel was a little bit higher than single-span plastic greenhouse. Single-span plastic greenhouses are disadvantageous in environmental managements such as ventilation performance and light transmittance because distance between greenhouses is too narrow and length of greenhouse is too long compared to high tunnels. To get the environmental improvement effects as well as to increase the structural resistance of single-span plastic greenhouses are achievable by widening the width of greenhouse in possible range, widening the space between rafters, and enlarging the section size of rafters. Also, we need to secure enough distance between greenhouses and to restrict the length of greenhouse by maximum 50 m in order to improve the ventilation performance and the light transmittance.

$Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ (CIGS) is one of the most promising photovoltaic materials because of large conversion efficiency which has been achieved with an optimum Ga/(In+Ga) composition in $CuIn_{1-x}Ga_xSe_2$ (X~0.3). The Ga/(In+Ga) content is important to determine band gap, solar cell performances and carrier behaviors at grain boundary (GB). Effects of Ga/(In+Ga) content on physical properties of the CIGS layers have been extensively studied. In previous research, it is reported that GB is not recombination center of CIGS thin-film solar cells. However, GB recombination and electron-hole pair behavior studies are still lacking, especially influence of with different X on CIGS thin-films. We obtained the GB surface potential, local current and I-V characteristic of different X (00.7 while X~0.3 showed higher potential than 100 mV on GBs. Higher potential on GBs appears positive band bending. It can decrease recombination loss because of carrier separation. Therefore, we suggest recombination and electron-hole behaviors at GBs depending on composition of X.
This paper surveys emission characteristics of Far-infrared of the fabrics fabricated with germanium imbedded sheath-core conjugate composite filaments. For this purpose, master batch chip was prepared with PET semi-dull chip and nano sized germanium particles and sheath-core type conjugate composite filament was spun using this master batch chip and polyester semi dull. The emission power and emissivity of the germanium imbedded fabrics were measured and investigated using FT-IR spectrophotometer by KICM- FIR 1005 measurement method. In addition, the fabric mechanical properties were measured and discussed with the effects of the optimum texturing process conditions and fabric structural design conditions. The sheath/core type PET composite germanium imbedded filaments were manufactured by the optimum spinning condition, its tenacity and breaking strain showed the same level as the regular PET filament. The tenacity and breaking strain of the DTY showed good physical properties and no problem in the weaving process. Then, wet and dry shrinkages showed higher values than those of regular PET filament. The emission power of the germanium imbedded fabric was $3.53{\times}10^2W/m^2$ at the $5-20{\mu}m$ wave length range, and emissivity was 0.874. The fabric hand of germanium imbedded fabrics was inhanced by the optimum texturing process and fabric structural design with improved mechanical properties such as fabric bending and compressional properties.
This study encompasses the performance of static and fatigue test for the 8 large scale test specimens to clarify the fatigue behavior of coped stringer and the effect of the repair and strengthening on the damaged stringer of the floor system in steel railway bridges. For the purpose of the research, the actual stress wave for the existing bridge was measured, the basic stress range frequency histogram was made and the equivalent stress range was calculated. Using the result from the equivalent stress range made by adjusting the stress range, the static and fatigue test was carried out by identifying the previous rehabilitation and after. As the result of the static tests, it was revealed that the level of local stress under the S1 specimen test of the real equivalent stress range was similar to tensile strength of the test material, and it was consistent with the requirement of the initiation condition of the fatigue crack. Through the various rehabilitation methods to the damaged specimens, the effects of the repair and reinforcement were analyzed. According to the results of the repair of effect, bolting the high tension bolt over the stop hole was confirmed to be more adequate method than drilling only stop hole to delay the fatigue crack growth. Futhermore, in case of the stringer subjected by bending moment, the reinforcement over the upper flange side was determined to be a useful strengthening method, and the reinforcement to the web of the stringer was not appropriate to accomodate as a adequate strengthening method. Also it was confirmed that the category of the fatigue design for the coped stringer met with the category E specified on the fatigue design criteria of the Highway Standard Specification in Korea.
The fabrication Process of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites by pressureless infiltration technique and the effects of additive Mg content and volume fraction of particulate reinforcement on mechanical and wear properties were investigated. It was found that the bending strength decreased with increasing volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. Whereas hardness increased with volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. The decrement of strength in case of high volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles was attributed to high porosity level. In terms of additive Mg content, $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing around 5~7wt% of additive Mg indicated the highest strength, and hardness values increased with additive Mg contents. Wear resistance of AC8A alloy were improved by reinforcement of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles especially at high sliding velocity. Wear property of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region. However a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which shows the minimum wear loss and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited almost same value as at slow velocity region, whereas wear loss of AC8A alloy almost linearly increased with sliding velocity. It was found that $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 20% exhibited abrasive wear surface regardless of sliding velocity and $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 40% showed slightly adhesive wear surface at low sliding velocity, and it progressed to severe wear as increasing the sliding velocity.

The shield tunneling method has been increasingly employed to minimize environmental damages and civil complaints in the populated and developed area. A lining segment, which is a main structure of the shield tunnel, consists of joints. Conventional foreign and domestic design data have been commonly used for design practices without a specific verification of structural analysis models, design load, and the effect of soil characteristics on the performance of lining segment. In this study, the suitability of existing analytic models used for the design of shield tunnel lining segment has been evaluated through a comparison between analytical and numerical solutions. Based on the evaluation of their suitability performed in the study, a full-circumferential beam jointed spring model (1R-S0) is proposed for design practices by considering user's convenience, the applicability of field conditions and the accuracy of analysis result. By using the proposed model, the parameter analysis was performed to investigate the effects of joint stiffness, ground rigidity, joint distribution and the number of joints on the behavior of lining segment. Parameters considered in the investigation have been appeared to affect the behavior of lining segment. Among those parameters, joint stiffness has been appeared to have the most significant effect on the bending moment and displacement of lining segment.

This study was carried out to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of sawdust boards combined with sycamore and polypropylene-net flakes. Both the sycamore and polypropylene-net flakes were adjusted to the sizes of $1.0{\times}1.0$, $1.0{\times}2.0$, and $1.5{\times}1.5cm^2$ and these flakes were mixed at 1, 2, 3, and 4% levels based on ovendry weights of sawdusts, respectively. The results obtained in this study were summarized as follows : 1. Thickness swellings of sawdust boards combined with sycamore flakes decreased with the increase of mixture levels and similar effects were also recognized in combination with polypropylene-net flakes. 2. Moduli of rupture both in sawdust boards combined with sycamore and polypropylene-net flakes increased with the increase of their mixture levels, and sawdust boards combined with sycamore flakes of $1.0{\times}2.0cm^2$ size and polypropylene-net flakes of $1.5{\times}1.5cm^2$ size showed higher moduli of rupture than control boards. 3. Moduli of elasticity both in sawdust hoards combined with sycamore and polypropylene-net flakes increased with the increase of their mixture levels as in moduli of rupture. 4. The physical and mechanical properties of sawdust boards combined with sycamore and polypropylene-net flakes were mainly dependent on aspect ratio of sycamore flakes and size of polypropylene-net flakes respectively, and these properties were improved with the respective increase of aspect ratio and size.
