  • The glass-ceramic of $Li_2O-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ system was synthesized by using $ZrO_2$, $ZrSiO_4$, $ZrOCl_2$ and $Zr(SO_4)_2$, which is a raw material of Zr serving as a nucleation agent. It was confirmed that Avrami parameter of these four glasses is over 3 for bulk crystallization. The glass synthesized by $ZrOCl_2$, and $Zr(SO_4)_2$ showed high melting quality during the melting process. It is also observed that the Zr component is uniformly distributed in the glass. Various characterizations was evaluated, including composition analysis and bending strength.

  • Composite pile, which is composed of the steel pipe pile in which the large horizontal force acts and the PHC pile in which the small horizontal force acts by a special connecting devices, is being commercialized as a base material for civil engineering structures. The core of such a composite pile can be said to be a design criterion for estimating the joint position and stability of the connection device between steel pipe pile and PHC pile. In Korea, there is no precise specification for the location of composite pile joints. In the LH Design Department (Korea Land & Housing Corporation, 2009), "Application of composite pile design and review of design book marking" was made with reference to Road Design Practice Volume 3 (Korea Expressway Corporation, 2001). this is used as a basis of the design of the composite pile. It can not be regarded as a section change of the composite pile, so it has a limitation in application. Therefore, In this study, we propose a design criterion for the location of the section of the composite pile (joint of steel pipe pile and PHC pile) and evaluate the stability and economical efficiency of it by using experimental method and analytical method. Analysis of composite pile design data installed in 79 domestic bridges abutment showed that the stresses, bending moments, and displacements acting on the pile body and connection of the pile were analyzed. Through the redesign process, it was confirmed that the stresses generated in the connecting device occur within the allowable stress values of the connecting device and the PHC pile. In conclusion, the design proposal of composite pile joint location through empirical case study in this study is an improved design method considering both stability and economical efficiency in designing composite pile.

  • In this paper, a multi-scale finite element (FE) modeling methodology for three-dimensional (3D) needle-punched (NP) C/SiC with a complex microstructure is presented. The variations of the material properties induced by the needle-punching process and complex geometrical features could pose challenges when estimating the material behavior. For considering these features of composites, a 3D microscopic FE approach is introduced based on micro-CT technology to produce a 3D high fidelity FE model. The image processing techniques of micro-CT are utilized to generate discrete-gray images and reconstruct the high fidelity model. Furthermore, a subcell modeling technique is developed for the 3D NP C/SiC based on the high fidelity FE model to expand to the macro-scale structural problem. A numerical homogenization approach under periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) is employed to estimate the equivalent behavior of the high fidelity model and effective properties of subcell components, considering geometry continuity effects. For verification, proposed models compare excellently with experimental results for the mechanical behavior of tensile, shear, and bending under static loading conditions.

  • PIC (Piecewise Integrated Composite) is a new concept for designing a composite structure with mosaically assigning various types of stacking sequences in order to improve mechanical properties of laminated composites. Also, machine learning is a sub-category of artificial intelligence, that refers to the process by which computers develop the ability to continuously learn from and make predictions based on data, then make adjustments without further programming. In the present study, the tapered box beam type PIC robot arm for carrying and transferring wide and thin LCD display was designed based on the machine learning in order to increase structural stiffness. Essential training data were collected from the reference elements, which were intentionally designated elements among finite element models, during preliminary FE analysis. Additionally, triaxiality values for each finite element were obtained for judging the dominant external loading type, such as tensile, compressive or shear. Training and evaluating machine learning model were conducted using the training data and loading types of elements were predicted in case the level accuracy was fulfilled. Three types of stacking sequences, which were to be known as robust toward specific loading types, were mosaically assigned to the PIC robot arm. Henceforth, the bending type FE analysis was carried out and its result claimed that the PIC robot arm showed increased stiffness compared to conventional uni-stacking sequence type composite robot arm.

  • Large thermal stress due to the difference between silicon carbide and graphite's coefficients of thermal expansion could be formed during crystal growing process of silicon carbide (SiC) at high temperature. The large thermal stress could separate the SiC seed crystals from graphite components, which bring about the drop of the seed crystal during crystal growth. However, the bonding properties of SiC seed crystal module has hardly reported so far. In this study, SiC and graphite were bonded using 3 types of bonding agents and a three-point bending tests using a mixed-mode flexure test were conducted for the bonded samples to evaluate the bonding characteristics between SiC and graphite. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and X-ray Computed Tomography were used to analyze the bonding characteristics and the microstructures of the SiC-graphite interfaces bonded with the bonding agents. As results, an excellent bonding agent was chosen to fabricate SiC seed crystal module with 50 mm in diameter. An SiC single crystal with 50 mm in diameter was successfully grown without falling out during top seeded solution growth of SiC at high temperature.

  • In the field of water treatment and pharmaceutical bio an alumina hollow fiber membrane used for mixture separation. However, due to the lack of strengths it is very brittle to handle and apply. Therefore, it is necessary to study and improve the bending strength of the membrane to 100 MPa or more. In this study, as the mixing ratio of the nano-particles increased to 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt%, the viscosity of the fluid mixture increased. The pore structure of the hollow membrane produced by interrupting the diffusion exchange rate of the solvent and non-solvent during the spinning process suppresses the formation of the finger-like structure and gradually increases the ratio of the sponge-like structure to improve the membrane mechanical strength to more than 100 MPa. As a result, an interparticle space was ensured to improve the porosity of the sponge-like structure with high permeability, and it showed excellent N2 permeability of about 100000 GPU and high water permeability of 3000 L/m2 h. Therefore, it can be concluded, that the addition of γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles as sintering aid is an important method to enhance the mechanical strength of the α-alumina hollow fiber membrane to maintain high permeability.

  • To investigate and evaluate the seismic damage behaviors of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) filled circular steel tube composite columns, in this study, the cyclic loading tests of 11 composite columns was carried out by using the load-displacement joint control method. The seismic damage process, hysteretic curves and performance indexes of composite columns were observed and obtained. The effects of replacement rates of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), diameter thickness ratio, axial compression ratio, profile steel ratio and section form of profile steel on the seismic damage behaviors of composite columns were also analyzed in detail. The results show that the failure model of columns is a typical bending failure under the combined action of horizontal loads and vertical loads, and the columns have good energy dissipation capacity and ductility. In addition, the replacement rates of RCA have a certain adverse effect on the seismic bearing capacity, energy consumption and ductility of columns. The seismic damage characteristics of composite columns are revealed according to the failure modes and hysteretic curves. A modified Park-Ang seismic damage model based on the maximum displacement and cumulative energy consumption was proposed, which can consider the adverse effect of RAC on the seismic damage of columns. On this basis, the performance levels of composite columns are divided into five categories, The interlayer displacement angle and damage index are used as the damage quantitative indicators of composite columns, and the displacement angle limits of composite columns at different performance levels under 80% assurance rate are calculated as 1/105, 1/85, 1/65, 1/28, and 1/25 respectively. On this basis, the damage index limits corresponding to each performance level are calculated as 0.045, 0.1, 0.48, 0.8, and 1.0 respectively. Finally, the corresponding relations among the performance levels, damage degrees, interlayer displacement angles and damage indexes of composite columns are established. The conclusions can provide reference for the seismic design of SRRC filled circular steel tube composite columns, it fills the vacancy in the research on seismic damage of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) filled circular steel tube composite columns.

  • The avoidance of enemy's radar detection is very important issue in the modem electronic weapon system. Researchers have studied to minimize reflected signals of radar. In this research, two types of radar absorbing structure (RAS), 'C'-type shell and 'U'-type shell, were fabricated using fiber-reinforced composite materials and their radar cross section (RCS) were evaluated. The absorption layer was composed of glass fiber reinforced epoxy and nano size carbon-black, and the reflection layer was fabricated with carbon fiber reinforced epoxy. During their manufacturing process, undesired thermal deformation (so called spring-back) was observed. In order to reduce spring-back, the bending angle of mold was controlled by a series of experiments. The spring-back of parts fabricated by using compensated mold was predicted by finite element analysis (ANSYS). The RCS of RAS shells were measured by compact range and predicted by physical optics method. The measured RCS data was well matched with the predicted data.

  • The increase of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content in recycled asphalt concrete (RAC) is accompanied by the degradation of low-temperature cracking resistance, which has become an obstacle to the development of RAC. This paper aims to reveal the meso-scale mechanisms of the low-temperature fracture behavior of RAC and provide a theoretical basis for the economical recycling of RAP. For this purpose, micromechanical heterogeneous peridynamic model of RAC was established and validated by comparing three-point bending (TPB) test results against corresponding numerical simulation results of RAC with 50% RAP content. Furthermore, the models with different aggregate shapes (i.e., average aggregates circularity (${\bar{C_r}}=1.00$, 0.75, and 0.50) and RAP content (i.e., 0%, 15%, 30%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) were constructed to investigate the effect of aggregate shape and RAP content on the low-temperature cracking resistance. The results show that peridynamic models can accurately simulate the low-temperature fracture behavior of RAC, with only 2.9% and 13.9% differences from the TPB test in flexural strength and failure strain, respectively. On the meso-scale, the damage in the RAC is mainly controlled by horizontal tensile stress and the stress concentration appears in the interface transition zone (ITZ). Aggregate shape has a significant effect on the low-temperature fracture resistance, i.e., higher aggregate circularity leads to better low-temperature performance. The large number of microcracks generated during the damage evolution process for the peridynamic model with circular aggregates contributes to slowing down the fracture, whereas the severe stress concentration at the corners leads to the fracture of the aggregates with low circularity under lower stress levels. The effect of RAP content below 30% or above 50% is not significant, but a substantial reduction (16.9% in flexural strength and 16.4% in failure strain) is observed between the RAP content of 30% and 50%. This reduction is mainly attributed to the fact that the damage in the ITZ region transfers significantly to the aggregates, especially the RAP aggregates, when the RAP content ranges from 30% to 50%.

  • PHC piles demonstrate superior resistance to compression and bending moments, and their factory-based production enhances quality assurance and management processes. Despite these advantages that have resulted in widespread use in civil engineering and construction projects, the design process frequently relies on empirical formulas or N-values to estimate the soil-pile friction, which is crucial for bearing capacity, and this reliance underscores a significant lack of experimental validation. In addition, environmental factors, e.g., the pH levels in groundwater and the effects of seawater, are commonly not considered. Thus, this study investigates the influence of vibrating machine foundations on PHC pile models in consideration of the effects of varying pH conditions. Concrete model piles were subjected to a one-month conditioning period in different pH environments (acidic, neutral, and alkaline) and under the influence of seawater. Subsequent repeated direct shear tests were performed on the pile-soil interface, and the disturbed state concept was employed to derive parameters that effectively quantify the dynamic behavior of this interface. The results revealed a descending order of shear stress in neutral, acidic, and alkaline conditions, with the pH-influenced samples exhibiting a more pronounced reduction in shear stress than those affected by seawater.
