  • Aging has been recognized as the primary cause of disc degeneration. A biomechanical characteristics of disc degeneration has been demonstrated that intradiscal pressure is reduced. With the increasing population of elderly people, disc degeneration and associated problems of nerve entrapment are becoming more prevalent. Presently, research on reduced intradiscal pressure associated with degeneration is insufficient. In this study. we used the Finite Element Method (FEM) of computerized simulations to investigate the effects of variation in intradiscal pressure on mechanical behaviours of L4-5 intervertebral disc degeneration. Degeneration was classified using four grades based on initial intradiscal pressure; Normal (135 kPa), mild(107 kPa), moderate (47 kPa) and severe (15 kPa). The predicted results f3r bending loads were as follows; 1 . Range of motion increased progressively with severity of degeneration with flexion and lateral bending moments, but decreased with extension moments. 2. Discal bulging of posterolateral aspect was larger in lateral bending and extension moment. But bulging was increased with severity of degeneration in lateral bending and torsion(same side).3. The rate of increasing intradiscal pressure was decreased in all bending motions with severity of degeneration. In conclusion, lateral bending and extension moment yield greatest bulging in severe degeneration. In torsion, although bending load produces disc bulging, disc bulging was associated more strongly with severity of degeneration than increasing torsional moments. Clinical Implications: Discal bulging may produce nerve root impingement and irritation. The effect of loading and posture on the varying degrees of disc degeneration has important implications especially in the elderly. In the presence of disc degeneration, avoidance of end range postures, especially extension and lateral bending may help reduce discal bulging and in turn, nerve entrapment.

  • As the connection between spread footing and pile is very important structural connection, it acts as the inter-loading medium to transfer the rail loads applied by superstructure to ground through the body pile of foundation. The experimental study is the method how to reinforce the pile cap between steel pile and footing utilizing perfobond plate with protruding keys. It were experimented on the compression punching tests and bending moment tests against the vertical loading and horizontal loadings acting on head of steel tube pipe. As a result, the tension capacity of the perfobond plate exhibited the superior performance due to the interlocking or dowel effects by the sheared keys of perfobond plate, and there were showing the sufficient strength and ductile capacity against the bending moment of horizontal loading tests. Therefore, it is judged that "the embedded method of perfobond plate in pile cap and footing" which is utilizing the shear connection of perfobond plate with protruding keys has a sufficient structural stability enough to be replaced with the current specification of reinforced method of pile cap with vertically deformed rebar against the vertical compression loads and bending moments that are able to occur in the combination structure of steel pile and the footing foundation.

  • This paper quantifies the effect of a bend angle of a pipe bend on plastic loads, via small strain and large strain FE limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials. To consider the effect of the attached straight pipe, two limiting cases are considered. One case corresponds to the pipe bend without the attached straight pipe, and the other to that with a sufficiently long attached straight pipe. For the former case, the FE results suggest that the limit load is not affected by the bend angle for both in-plane bending and internal pressure. For the latter case, however, the bend angle affects plastic loads. An interesting finding is that the plastic load smoothly changes from the limit load of the straight pipe when the bend angle approaches zero to the plastic load of the $90^{\circ}$ pipe bend when the bend angle approaches 90 degree. Based on such observations, closed-form plastic load solutions are proposed for the pipe bend with an arbitrary bend angle under in-plane bending and internal pressure.

  • This paper proposes closed-form plastic limit load solutions for elbows under in-plane bending, via three-dimensional (3-D), small strain FE limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials. A wide range of elbow and thinning geometries are considered. For systematic analyses of the effect of the axial thinning length on limit loads, two limiting cases are considered; a sufficiently long wall thinning, and the circumferential part-through surface crack. Closed-form plastic limit load solutions for wall thinning with intermediate longitudinal extents are then obtained from these two limiting cases. The effect of the axial extent of wall thinning on plastic limit loads for elbows is highlighted by comparing that for straight pipes. Although the proposed solutions are developed for the case when wall thinning exists in the center of elbows, it is also shown that they can be applied to the case when wall thinning exists anywhere within the elbow.

  • To verify the load equations, the load-stroke curves of the load equation that were analytically derived for sandwich plates were compared with those of the simulations in the case of the total thickness of 3 mm, the thickness of the face sheets of 0.5 mm, a gap between attachment points of 1.5 mm, and a thickness of the core element of 0.8 mm. The results of the comparisons showed that the overall analytic loads enable the prediction of the numerical loads irrespective of the change of the clearance, the radius of the die, and the radius ratio.

  • To analyze and predict crack initiation position and propagation directions on the spot welded area are very important for strength design of the automobile body structure. It is necessary to test by method considering random loads with variable amplitude for strength design of vehicle body structure, because driving cars are actually subjected to random loads with variable amplitude in the road. Although this condition, nearly all tests haute been performed under constant load conditions in the laboratory because it is impossible to replay like an actual conditions. In this study, using in-plane bending type specimens, the overload factor affecting on the fatigue strength, crack initiation and propagation directions of spot-welded specimens have been studied.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of using HDF as surface panels as well as core materials for flush door manufacturing. Several core compositions were developed and applied to manufacture door specimens. Core materials were tested under bending load, door manufacturing process was analysed to find better way of using HDF for door manufacturing, and door specimens were tested under bending, twisting and impact loads. From this study, it was concluded that HDF can be used to manufacture quality flush doors. And it was desirable to use light color HDF as surface panels because dark color HDF caused a problem in manufacturing process by shadow shown through finishing veneer. HDF doors were light, and showed good quality and higher resistance against bending twisting and impact loads.

  • Test facilities for the wind turbine performance monitoring and mechanical load measurements are installed in Vestas 100 kW wind turbine in Wollyong test site, Jeju island. The monitoring system consists of Garrad-Hassan T-MON system, telemetry system for blade load measurement, various sensors such as anemometer, wind vane, strain gauge, power meter, and etc. The experimental procedure for the measurement of wind turbine loads, such as edgewise(lead-lag) bending moment, flapwise bending moment, and tower base bending moment, has been established. Strain gauges are on-site calibrated against load cell prior to monitoring the wind turbine loads. Using the established monitoring system, the wind turbine is remotely monitored. From the measured load data, the load analysis has been performed to obtain the load power spectral density and the fatigue load spectra of the wind turbine.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the mechanical integrity for Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) cladding under lateral loads during transportation. The evaluation process requires a conservative consideration of the degradation conditions of SNF cladding, especially the hydride effect, which reduces the ductility of the cladding. The dynamic forces occurring during the drop event are pinch force, axial force and bending moment. Among those forces, axial force and bending moment can induce transverse tearing of cladding. Our assessment of 14 × 14 PWR SNF was performed using finite element analysis considering SNF characteristics. We also considered the probabilistic procedures with a Monte Carlo method and a reliability evaluation. The evaluation results revealed that there was no probability of damage under normal conditions, and that under accident conditions the probability was small for transverse failure mode.

  • The nonlocal strain gradient theory for the static bending analysis of graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) reinforced the nanoplate is developed in this paper. The nanoplatelet is exposed to thermo-mechanical loads and is also supposed to stand on an elastic foundation. For computing impressive composite material characteristics, the Halpin-Tsai model is selected for various sectors. The various distributions are propounded including UD, FG-O, and FG-X. The represented equations are acquired based on the virtual work and sinusoidal shear and normal deformation theory (SSNDT). Navier's solution as the analytical method is applied to solve these equations. Furthermore, the effects of GPL weight fraction, temperature parameters, distribution pattern and parameters of the foundation are presented and discussed.
