This article develops a nonclassical model to analyze bending response of squared perforated microbeams considering the coupled effect of microstructure and surface stress under different loading and boundary conditions, those are not be studied before. The corresponding material and geometrical characteristics of regularly squared perforated beams relative to fully filled beam are obtained analytically. The modified couple stress and the modified Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity models are adopted to incorporate the microstructure as well as the surface energy effects. The differential equations of equilibrium including the Poisson's effect are derived based on minimum potential energy. Exact closed form solution is obtained for bending behavior of the proposed model considering the classical and nonclassical boundary conditions for both uniformly distributed and concentrated loads. The proposed model is verified with results available in the literature. Influences of the microstructure length scale parameter, surface energy, beam thickness, boundary and loading conditions on the bending behavior of perforated microbeams are investigated. It is observed that microstructure and surface parameters are vital in investigation of the bending behavior of perforated microbeams. The obtained results are supportive for the design, analysis and manufacturing of perforated nanobeams that commonly used in nanoactuators, nanoswitches, MEMS and NEMS systems.

The practical application of REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes, vital for energy transmission (e.g., cable application) and high-field magnets (e.g., coil application), necessitates efficient and simple quality assessment procedures. This study introduces a systematic approach to assess the electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes under 77 K and self-field conditions. The approach involves customized tensile and bending tests that clarify the critical current (Ic) response of the CC tapes under mechanical loads induced by tension and bending. This study measures the retained Ic values of commercially available GdBCO CC tapes under 250 MPa tensile stress and 40 mm bending diameter. Through experimentation, the study demonstrates the resilience of these tapes and their suitability for applications. By presenting a simplified stress-based analysis and a bending test of the tapes, the study contributes to effective quality assessment methods for the development of practical superconducting products.

Ratcheting is the cyclic buildup of inelastic strain on a structure resulting from a combination of primary and secondary cyclic stress. It can lead to excessive plastic deformation, incremental collapse, or fatigue. Ratcheting has been numerically investigated on a cantilever beam, considering the current study's primary and secondary bending loads. In addition, the effect of input frequency on the onset of ratcheting has been investigated. The non-linear dynamic elastic-plastic approach has been utilized. Analogous to Yamashita's bending-bending ratchet diagram, a non-dimensional ratchet diagram with a frequency effect is proposed. The result presents that the secondary stress values fall sequentially with the increase of primary stress values. Moreover, a displacement amplification factor graph is also established to explain the effect of frequency on ratchet occurrence conditions. In terms of frequency effect, it has been observed that the lower frequency (0.25 times the natural frequency) was more detrimental for ratchet occurrence conditions than the higher frequency (2 times the natural frequency) due to the effect of dynamic displacement. Finally, the effect of material modeling of ratcheting behavior on a beam is shown using different hardening coefficients of kinematic hardening material modeling.

The analysis of prismatic members made of reinforced concrete under inclined bending, especially the computation of ultimate loads, is a pronounced non-linear problem which is frequently solved by discretizing the stress distribution in the cross-section using interpolation functions. In the approach described in the present contribution the exact analytical stress distribution is used instead. The obtained expressions are integrated by means of a symbolic manipulation package and automatically converted to optimized Fortran code. The direct problem-computation of ultimate internal forces given the position of the neutral axis-is first described. Subsequently, two kinds of inverse problem are treated: the computation of rupture envelops and the dimensioning of reinforcement, given design internal forces. An iterative Newton-Raphson procedure is used. Examples are presented.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the buckling characteristics of a conceptually designed KALIMER-150(Korea Advanced LIquid MEtal Reactor, 150MWe) reactor vessel and verify the buckling behavior using the reduced scale cylindrical shell structures. To do this, nonlinear buckling analyses using finite element method and evaluation formulae are carried out. From the results, the KALIMER-150 reactor vessel exhibits a dominant bending buckling mode and is significantly affected by the plastic behavior. The interaction effects with the vertical seismic load cause the lateral buckling load to be slightly decrease. From the results of the buckling experiments using reduced scaled cylindrical shell structures, it is verified that the buckling modes such as pure bending, pure shear, and mixed(bending plus shear) mode clearly appear under a lateral load corresponding to the slenderness ratio of cylinder.
A stability problems of isotropic shells under pure bending is investigated based on the classical shells theory. The governing equations of stability problem presented by Donnell and Love, are developed and the solutions for the cylindrical shells are obtained by using Galerkin method. Bending moment is applied at the ends of the cylindrical shell as a from of distributed load in the shape of sine curve. For the isotropic materials, the result of the general purpose structural analysis program based on the finite element method are compared with the critical moment obtained from the classical shell theories. The critical loads for the cylindrical shells with various geometry can not be evaluated with a simple equation. However, accurate solutions for the stability problems of cylindrical shells can be obtained through the equilibrium equation developed in the study.
The response of multi-story building structures to lateral loads, mainly due to earthquake and wind, is investigated for preliminary design purposes. Emphasis is placed on structural systems consisting of rigid and braced steel frames. An attempt to gain a qualitative understanding of the influence of bending and shear stiffness distribution on the deformations of such structures is made. This is achieved by modeling the structure with a stiffness equivalent Timoshenko beam. It is observed that the conventional stiffness distribution, dictated by strength constraints, may not be the best to satisfy deflection criteria. This is particularly the case for slender structural systems with prevailing bending deformations, such as flexible braced frames. This suggests that a new approach to the design of such frames may be appropriate when serviceability governs. A pertinent strategy for preliminary design purposes is proposed.
Fatigue fracture behavior of a hybrid joint part with bolting was evaluated in comparison to the case of static fracture. Hybrid joint part specimens for bending test were made with layers of CFRP and aluminum honeycomb. Characteristic fracture behaviors of those specimens were obviously different under static and cyclic loads. Static bending load showed the shear deformation at the honeycomb core, whereas cyclic bending load caused the delamination between CFRP skin layers and honeycomb core. Experimental results obtained by static and fatigue tests were considered in modifications of design parameters of the hybrid joint.

A key parameter in the design of a laterally loaded pile is the determination of its performance level. Performance level of a pile is usually expressed as the maximum head deflection and bending moment. In general, uncertainties in the performance of a pile originates from many factors such as inherent variability of soil properties, inadequate soil exploration programs, errors taking place in the determination of soil parameters, limited calculation models as well as uncertainties in loads. This makes it difficult for practicing engineers to decide for the reliability of laterally loaded piles both in cohesive and cohesionless soils. In this paper, limit state functions and consequent performance functions are obtained for single concrete piles to predict the maximum bending moment, a widely accepted design criterion along with the permissible pile head displacement. Analyses were made utilizing three dimensional finite element method and soil-structure-interaction (SSI) effects were accounted for.
Based on Reissner's mixed variational theorem (RMVT), the authors develop a semi-analytical finite element (FE) method for a three-dimensional (3D) bending analysis of nonhomogeneous orthotropic, complete and incomplete toroidal shells subjected to uniformly-distributed loads. In this formulation, the toroidal shell is divided into several finite annular prisms (FAPs) with quadrilateral cross-sections, where trigonometric functions and serendipity polynomials are used to interpolate the circumferential direction and meridian-radial surface variations in the primary field variables of each individual prism, respectively. The material properties of the toroidal shell are considered to be nonhomogeneous orthotropic over the meridianradial surface, such that homogeneous isotropic toroidal shells, laminated cross-ply toroidal shells, and single- and bi-directional functionally graded toroidal shells can be included as special cases in this work. Implementation of the current FAP methods shows that their solutions converge rapidly, and the convergent FAP solutions closely agree with the 3D elasticity solutions available in the literature.
