  • This paper reports briefly on the computational results of a turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection with the elliptic-blending second-moment closure (EBM). The primary emphasis of the study is placed on an investigation of accuracy and numerical stability of the elliptic-blending second-moment closure for the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. The turbulent heat fluxes in this study are treated by the algebraic flux model with the temperature variance and molecular dissipation rate of turbulent heat flux. The model is applied to the prediction of the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Rayleigh numbers ranging from Ra=$2{\times}10^6$ to Ra=$10^9$ and the computed results are compared with the previous experimental correlations, T-RANS and LES results. The predicted cell-averaged Nusselt number follows the correlation by Peng et al.(2006) (Nu=$0.162Ra^{0.286}$) in the 'soft' convective turbulence region ($2{\times}10^6{\leq}Ra{\leq}4{\times}10^7$) and it follows the experimental correlation by Niemela et al. (2000) (N=$0.124Ra^{0.309}$) in the 'hard' convective turbulence region ($10^8{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^9$) within 5% accuracy. This results show that the elliptic-blending second-moment closure with an algebraic flux model predicts very accurately the Rayleigh-Benard convection.

  • Direct numerical solution for flow and heat transfer for Benard convection with a body is obtained using an accurate and efficient Fourier-Chebyshev collocation and multi-domain method. The flow and temperature fields are obtained fur different Rayleigh numbers and thermal boundary conditions of body. The body has adiabatic and constant temperature conditions. The existence of a body gives different flow and heat transfer fields in the system, compared to pure Benard convection. The flow and temperature fields are also affected by the thermal boundary condition of a body.

  • A two-dimensional Benard-convection system with a phase-change material inside has been analysed. The main purpose of the present study is to clarify the basic reason of the hysteresis found by the previous investigators. The interface between the solid and the liquid is assumed to be planar. The analysis was performed with heat transfer rates under the steady state on the interface. It was found that the hysteresis occurs due to the abrupt increase in the heat transfer rate at the onset of natural convection in the classical Benard-convection system. The spectral method was applied to obtain the steady solution of the natural convection for the specific material and to confirm the hysteresis phenomenon.

  • Rayleigh-Benard-Marangoni (RBM) convection have been artificially made for application of various engineering fields. For a relatively larger circular container, natural convection experiments were carried out to reveal and show the flow characteristics with engine oil (SAE30) using IR camera. IR camera has captured the temperature distribution on the free surface. From these experiments, it was confirmed that it was possible to quantitatively analyze the occurrence characteristics of RBM flow clearly from the thermal images taken with IR camera. As the aspect ratio increased, both the number of internal and external cavities increased. And found that the criteria of RBM flow generation proposed through previous experiments performed for small-sized containers are also very effective with the results on larger circular container.

  • The problem of Benard double diffusive Marangoni convection is investigated in a horizontally infinite composite layer system consisting of a two component fluid layer above a porous layer saturated with the same fluid, using Darcy-Brinkman model with constant heat sources/sink in both the layers. The lower boundary of the porous region is rigid and upper boundary of the fluid region is free with Marangoni effects. The system of ordinary differential equations obtained after normal mode analysis is solved in closed form for the eigenvalue, thermal Marangoni number for two types of thermal boundary combinations, Type (I) Adiabatic-Adiabatic and Type (II) Adiabatic -Isothermal. The corresponding two thermal Marangoni numbers are obtained and the essence of the different parameters on non-Darcy-Benard double diffusive Marangoni convection are investigated in detail.

  • Rayleigh-Benard natural convection experiments were carried out as the preliminary experiment to simulate the natural convection of the core melt at the severe accident conditions. This work focused on the influences of plate separation distance(s), the existence of the side walls and crust geometries of upper and lower plates. Based upon the analogy concept, a cupric acid-copper sulfate electroplating system($H_2SO_4-CuSO_4$) was employed as the mass transfer system and measurements were made for $Ra_s$ ranging from $1.06{\times}10^7$ to $2.91{\times}10^{10}$. The test results measured for a single horizontal plate were in good agreement with the correlation reported by McAdams and those for two horizontal plates showed the similar trend to the existing Rayleigh-Benard heat transfer correlations developed by Dropkin and Somerscales, Globe and Dropkin. The measured heat transfer rate decreased with the increasing separation distance between the two plates and became similar to those for a single horizontal plate. Fin arrays mounted on both upper and lower plates enhanced the heat transfer rates. For all cases, the heat transfer rates measured for open side walls are higher than those for closed ones.

  • A Rayleigh-Benard problem with non-uniform wall temperatures of the form, $T_L=T_1+{\delta}{\Delta}T{\sin}kx$ and $T_U=T_2-{\delta}{\Delta}{\sin (kx)$, is numerically investigated. In the conduction-dominated regime with small a Rayleigh number, a two-tier structure appears with two counter-rotating rolls stacked on the top of each other. The flow becomes unstable with increase of the Rayleigh number, and multicellular convection occurs above a critical Rayleigh number. The multicellular flows at high Rayleigh numbers consist of approximetely square-shape cells. Four multiple flows and dual flows classified by the number of cells are found at k=0.5 and k=1, respectively.

  • This study deals with the Benard Flow of Magnetic Fluids in a rectangular cavity which the ratio between height and width is 1 : 4 and the base side or left side is a heating face while other sides are to be cooling faces. When Magnetic field was equally impressed, considering the internal rotation of the elementary ferromagnetic particle, we found the following result from the numerical analysis of the GSMAC algorithm applied to the equation of the magnetic fluid. Benard flow is controlled by intensity and direction of magnetic fields, and critical point appears when especially magnetic field with a heating base and side area near H=-7000 and H=-10000 is applied.

  • Numerical calculations are carried out for the natural convection induced by temperature difference between a cold outer square cylinder and a hot inner circular cylinder for Rayleigh number of $Ra=10^7$. This study investigates the effect of the inner cylinder location on the heat transfer and fluid flow. The location of inner circular cylinder ($\delta$) is changed vertically along the center-line of square enclosure. The natural convection bifurcates from unsteady to steady state according to $\delta$. Two critical positions of ${\delta}_{C,L}$ and ${\delta}_{C,U}$ as a lower bound and an upper bound are ${\delta}_{C,L}=0.05$ and ${\delta}_{C,U}=0.18$, respectively. Within the defined bounds, the thermal and flow fields are steady state. When the inner cylinder locates at ${\delta}{\geq}{\delta}_{C,U}$, the space between the upper surface of inner cylinder and the top surface of the enclosure forms a relatively shallow layer where the natural convection characterized as the pure Rayleigh-Benard convection forms alternately the upwelling and downwelling plums, as a result that a series of cells known as Benard cells is derived.
