This study aims to analyze the current status and characteristics of apartment house unit plans towards spatial differentiation. The 172 house units from 32 housing complexes were selected for this analysis. In this study, factors of residential space plan especially in an apartment house are categorized into general characteristics on floor plan and factors for spatial floor plan. The Primary findings are as follows: (1) General characteristics on floor plan are analyzed based on space organization, area and number of bays. Among apartment houses over 40 pyeong, it seems that differentiation is well applied with various space plans available. (2) A result of an analysis on the factors for spatial floor plan shows that planning a living room with two-open-sides seems to be more common in the tower-shaped apartment blocks which are now on the increase. Moreover, many of them are adopting movable partitions to reflect resident's various demands on space plan. Among all, the extra kitchen in the balcony is planned high portion of 80.4%. And diningroom is positioned on the front side of the residential space along with a livingroom(19.2%). More frequently, dining area tends to face the living room(30.2%) according to the result. Besides dress rooms begin to be placed in each of the bedroom, once planned in one bedroom only while 18.6% of the apartment houses are placing new storages in the entrance to solve lack of storage space due to balcony extension.
The objective of the study is to derive the quantitative result and method from the solar simulation on the traditional architectonic control methods and their effects for the sunshine on Ddeuljip in Northern Area of Kyongsang-Bukdo Province, Korea. The Ddeuljip(rectangular-shaped housing plan having an inner court) has distinctive form to introduce plentiful sunshine deep inside to the house in spite of disadvantageous condition resulted from the structure of traditional housing composition, that is, Ickrang(linkage block connecting buildings). From the research on the Ddeuljip, following results were derived: First, in the plan the sunshine environment was improved by placing the master bedroom on the right diagonally, or projecting it toward the Ickrang when there isn't enough space for the inner court and the Daechung(wooden floored main hall). Second in the elevation specific sunshine control methods were developed by increasing the height of the master bedroom, reducing the eaves of south elevation, or differentiating the height of ceiling structure gradually.
The purpose of the study was to examine the housing needs of the elderly who lived in rural area and suggest the planning directions of the housing for the rural elderly. The subjects were 192 elderlies who lived in the rural area in Gyeongnam and Chonbuk. They were selected by using the stratified sampling method. Also the interview method was used for collecting the data. The results were as follows: 1) Most of the rural elderly had some problems in their health. Thus, the housing for them should be planned on the basis of their health conditions. 2) The rural elderly had active interaction with their neighborhoods. Therefore, the housing for them should be planned for maintaining this active relation. 3) The rural elderly has lived in their housing for long time and wanted to live there as long as possible. This implies that the concept of 'aging in place' should be considered as one of the Important design issues in the rural housing for the elderly. 4) Even though many rural elderlies didn't know about the planned housing facilities for the elderly, they had intentions to live in there if they were provided in rural area. 5) The rural elderly preferred the monthly payment system or the life long payment system as the payment system of the planned housing facilities for the elderly. Also, they wanted that facility to be maintained by the government. 6) The detached housing type or three story townhouse type which is located in each rural village as small size would be desirable as the housing for the rural elderly. 7) The 10-30 pyung would be desirable as the size of housing unit. Also, 2-6 persons per room in case of sharing a bedroom. 8) Ondol-bang would be desirable however the size of the bedroom should be determined by considering using the bed.

This article discusses about the basic condition and the floor area for daily living activities of the elderly in 3 skilled nursing facilities in west gyeongnam province. As the result, There is a wide gap between floor area ratio of skilled nursing facilities. The characteristics of the private establishment skilled nursing facilities in the west gyeongnam province were figured out through the analysis of spatial composition in skilled nursing facilities for the elderly. The skilled nursing facilities in west gyeongnam mainly focus on the living environment orientated toward the bedroom. The difficulty is to encourage the communication between the skilled nursing facility patients because the facilities are composed of small semi-public zone.
This study is a case study to grasp residents` trade-off preference and opinions for selected interior environmental attributes of muilti-family housing. Interiew with structured questionnaire was carried out through pilot and main survey. On the basis of the result of pilot survey, interior environmental attributes for the main survey were selected. Selected attributes were the size of each residential room, the degree of openness between two rooms and interior facilities. Among them, trade-off approach was applied to the size of each residential room and interior facilities. For the main survey. 45 housewives living in 31 pyung apartment of a selected construction company to grasp the residents` trade-off preference and opinions on the selected attributes. In terms of the size of each room, subjects wanted the room to be lager, whereas master bedroom smaller, and family bathroom larger, wheareas toilet near master bedroom smaller. In terms of the degree of openness between two rooms, the present degree of openness between private and service area such as living room and balcony, and second bedroom and adjacent balcony need to be more open, whereas the present degree of openness between living room and dining room and between living room and kitchen need to be more closed. The comparative orders of important intems were the ventilation facility in the bathroom, drying poles for clothes in the balcony, interior landscape, and workable for hand washing clothes. In conclusion, measurement of preference using trade-off approach about selected interior environmental attributes in post-occupancy evaluation was regarded as a promising evaluation method to grasp the practical and comparative preference under constraints comparing to the typical existing methods.
Most residential buildings in Korea are preferred to have maximum interior spaces, rather than consider its original design, overall building performance, and any other aspects since early 1990's. Especially in high-rise apartment buildings, balcony has been merged to living room to get more interior spaces and this renovation trends have been producing deep and narrow shapes of living rooms that was not initially intended by architects. On the other hand, the same gross area of each unit does not necessarily mean same width and depth ratio of each residential unit. Generally, we can categorize it to the deep or wide unit based on its width and depth ratio. Under these circumstances, this study analyzes the room usage pattern changes based on the space width and depth ratio and the effect of expansion of room space to the balcony. This study also includes about 180 apartments plan case studies to find out the relationships among w/d ratio changes, furniture arrangement types, and room configurations. In this research, general apartment room w/d ratios are 0.97 ∼ 1.23; 0.7(south facing sitting room), 1.23(south facing bed room), and 0.95(north facing bedroom). But, after expanding room space to balcony w/d ratio increased as follows; sitting room become 1.31, general south facing bedroom become 1.23, and north facing bedroom become 1.45. In addition to user preference of w/d ratio, many people prefer rectangular room shape a little(w/d ratio is 0.9 or 1.2) than square style (w/d ratio is 1.0) or very deep room style (w/d ratio Is more over 1.5). Accordingly, expanding the room space to balcony may make unsatisfactory room w/d ratio. Expanding room space to balcony should be considered by existing room w/d ratio.

This study is aimed to suggesting a hypothesis about the process of improvement of houses of the Korean-Chinese, comparing how Han Chinese and Korean-Chinese houses changed in Yanbian Area of China. This draws the conclusion by analyzing the field survey about residence of the Han Chinese and the Korean-Chinese in Yanbian Area of China. First of all, the characteristic of residence style change and the plan of rural houses of the Han Chinese are in the following. The plan of houses has been changed from allocating rooms from side to side with the kitchen as the center to linking each functional spaces through the aisle. And the main bedroom of houses becomes the central space for family members instead of Kang (partial Ondol) by expanding the floor heating system under the whole floor in houses. Next, the feature of residence style changes of the Han Chinese and the Korean-Chinese is as follows. In 1970s barns disappeared from houses of the Korean Chinese, but houses of the Han Chinese were not much changed. From 1980s to 1990s, spaces linking each rooms with aisles had appeared for comfortableness of residence and respecting each individual's privacy. On the other hand, The houses of the Korean-Chinese make a whole big space by getting rid of walls between the rooms. And after 2 thousand years later, Han Chinese houses have a bedroom with floor heating system. Both houses of the Korean-Chinese and the Han Chinese are changed to have a residence style which taking sedentary style and standing style.
This study aims to provide basic data for designing aged care residential facilities in Korea, based on the investigation and analysis of the aged care residential services and their communal living areas in Australia focusing on their types, scales, arrangement and the specific design of each compartment. -. A residential building with 10 beds is composed of private zones and communal ones, and their space arrangement depends on how to arrange bedrooms where residents mainly stay. -. A lounge, 26.7 m$^2$ of its average scale, is a main space for daily lives and an important place for making friends with neighboring residents. -. A dining hall is an important area for activity as well as a space for dining. The average scales of dining room, kitchen, and whole space are 42.7 m$^2$, 28 m$^2$, and 70.8 m$^2$ respectively, and those for person are 2.7 m$^2$: 1.7 m$^2$:4.4 m$^2$, although the scales depend on facilities. -. An activity room is used for promoting the social relationship between residents and visitors. Three of the investigated facilities have big rooms of 42 m$^2$, 39 m$^2$ and 51 m$^2$. -. If there is no lavatory in a bedroom, 2-6 bathrooms for residents are arranged near bedrooms and they are relatively big including shower baths. If there is a lavatory in a bedroom, 1 toilet for visitors is arranged in a communal living area and its scale is small.
