Most large strike-slip faults do not rupture their entire length during single faulting but generally break in segments which are different in location and time of faulting. Studies related to the development of the Yangsan fault have been reported based on partial results from characteristics of geolgocial distribution, geophysical prospecting and paleostress analyses. This paper shows, based on preliminary results, that the Yangsan fault could be divided into four structural areas along entire length. These areas are different in geological distribution, bedding attitude measured from sedimentary rocks, strike of main fault, geometry of small faults, termination types of fault tips, cyclic variation of fault zone width, and arrangement of paleostress. Therefore, the Yangsan fault could be divided into at least four segments.
Lower Ordovician rock samples were collected from 23 sites located at the Okcheon non-metamorphic zone, near Taeback and Yeongweol areas, southern part of the Korean Peninsula. A characteristic magnetic component was obtained from four sites. This stable direction ($Dm=-19.4^{\circ}$, $Im=24.1^{\circ}$) which is carried by hematite of very high temperature $679^{\circ}C$), successfully pass both of reversal test and paleopole reliability test, and is regarded as a primary direction. The remagnetized components can be divided into three on the basis of their characteristic directions and magnetic minerals. The first which is carried by hematite, magnetite and pyrrhotite, is widely found at the whole sites. It shows syn- or post-tectonic remagnetization according to strongly negative fold test and distribution between Mesozoic and present field directions. The second, in situ, is distinguishable from the present field direction. After bedding correction, it is identical to Late Triassic to Early Jurassic direction. Its magnetic carrier is considered to be a single component hematite, which may be acquired by pre-tectonic CRM in the Okcheon orogenic zone. The third, which is carried by magnetite and hematite, is characterized by stable reversed direction. These minerals may be acquired by the thermal or chemical process in unknown period. Paleopole position is $169.2^{\circ}E$ in longitude and $59.9^{\circ}S$ in latitude, which indicates that the study area was located at $12.6^{\circ}S$ in paleo-latitude and belonged to northern end of the Gondwana in Early Ordovician.
The Yeonhwa II zinc-lead mine is characterized by a dozen of moderately dipping tabular orebodies of skarn and zinc-lead sulfides, developed in accordance with the ENE-trending bedding thrusts and bedding planes of the Pungchon Limestone and underlying Myobong Formation, mostly along the contacts of a ENE-trending sill and a NW-trending dike of quartz mononite porphyry. The orebodies occur in three groups: (1) the footwall Wolgok orebodies with respect to the sill, (2) the hangingwall Wolgok orebodies, and (3) the Seongok orebodies extended from dike contacts into carbonate beds. Mineral compositions of these orebodies are dominated by calc-silicates (skarn) associated with ore minerals of sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite, as well as sulfide gangue of pyrrhotite. A pair of exo- and endo-skerns in the Wolgok footwall contact aureole between the Pungchon Limestone and quartz monzonite porphyry on the -120 level represents a well-developed symmetrical pattern of mineral zoning: a garnet/quartz zone in the center of exoskarn, two zones of pyroxene with ore minerals on both sides of the garnet/quartz zone, further outwards-an epidote/chlorite-bearing hornfelsic zone in the Myobong slate beyond a zone of unaffected limestone, and an epidote-dominated zone of endo skarn on the opposite side toward fresh quartz monzonite porphyry. These features indicate a combination of two effects on the skarn formation: (1) differences in composition of the host rocks(sedimentary and ignous), and (2) progressive outward migration of inner zones on outer zones on the course of metasomatic replacement of the pre-existing minerals. Microprobe analyses of garnet, pyroxene, pyroxenoids, epidote, and chlorite for nine major elements on a total of 23 mineral grains revealed that: the pyroxenes are hedenbergitic, in most zones, with a gradual decrease of Fe- and Mn-contents toward the central zone, whereas the garnets are andraditic in outer zones, but are grossularitic in the central zone. This indicates a reverse relationship of Fe-contents between pyroxene and garnet across the exoskarn zones. Pyroxenoids are lacking in wollastonite but are dominated by pyroxmangite, rhodonite and bustamite, indicating a Mn-rich nature in bulk chemistry. Pseudomorphic fluorite after garnet occurs abundantly reflecting a fluorine-enhanced evidence of the skarn-forming fluids. Epidote contains 0.19-0.25mole fraction of pistacite, and chlorite is Mn-rich but is Mg-poor. Sulfide mineralization took place with the most Fe-rich pyroxene rather than with garnet as indicated by the fact that the highest value of hedenbergite mole fraction occurs in the ore-bearing pyroxene zone. The Yeonhwa II ores are characterized by high zinc and low lead in metal grade, with minor quantity of copper content in almost constant grade. The hangingwall Wolgok and Seongok orebodies, that formed in a more open environment with respect to their local configurations of geologic setting, are more variable in metal grades and ratios, than are the footwall Wolgok orebodies formed in a more closed condition in a narrow interval of sedimentary beds.
Regional geophysical surveys and geological cal studies on natural gas hydrate (NGH) in the East Sea were carried out by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) from 2000 to 2004. 16 piston cores, 2270 L-km of multi-channel reflection seismic (MCRS) data and 730 L-km of 3.5kHz Chirp data obtained from the southwestern part of the deep-water Ulleung Basin were analyzed in this study. In piston cores, cracks generally developed parallel to bedding suggest significant gas content. The core analyses showed high total organic carbon (TOC) content, sedimentation rate and heat flow of sediments. These are in favor of the general ion of substantial biogenic methane, which can form the NGH within the stability zone of the near seafloor sediments in the study area. The cores generally show also high residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations for the formation of natural gas hydrates The geophysical indicators of the presence of gas and/or NGH such as bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs), seismic blank Bones, pockmarks and gas seeping features were well defined on the MCRS and Chirp data.
In deep mining, the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar appears to be a new characteristic. In order to study the lateral deformation of coal-mass, a monitoring method and monitoring instrument were designed to investigate the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar in Tangkou Coalmine with the mining depth of over 1000 m. Because of without influence of repeated mining, the bedding sandstone roof is easy to break and the angle between maximum horizontal stress and the roadway is small, the maximum lateral deformation is only about 287 mm lower than the other pillars in the same coalmine. In deep mining, the energy accumulation and release cause a discontinuous damage in the heterogeneous coal-mass, and the lateral deformation of coal pillar shows discontinuity, step and mutation characters. These coal-masses not only show a higher plasticity but also the high brittleness at the same time, and its burst tendency is more obvious. According to the monitoring results and theoretical calculations, the yield zone of the coal pillar width is determined as 15.6 m. The monitoring results presented through this study are of great significance to the stability analysis and design of coal pillar.
The effects of geologic structures such as rock joins and bedding planes on the thermal conductivity of a discontinuous rock mass are studied. The expressions for the equivalent thermal conductivities of jointed rock masses are derived and found to be anisotropic. The degree of anisotropy depends primarily on the thermal properties contrast between the joint phase and surrounding intact rock, the joint density expressed as volume fraction and the inclination angle of the joint. Within the context of 2-dimensional finite element heat transfer scheme, the isotherms around a circular hole are analyzed for both the isotropic and anisotropic rock masses in 3 different thermal boundary conditions. i.e. temperature, heat flux and convection boundary conditions. The temperature in the stratified anisotripic rock mass is greatly influenced by the thermal properties of the rock formation in contact with the heat source. Using the excavation-temperature coupled elastic plastic finite element method, analyzed is the thermo-mechanical stability of a circular opening subjected to 10$0^{\circ}C$ at a depth of 527m. It is found that the thermal stress concentration was enough to deteriorate the stability and form a plastic yield zone around the opening, in contrast to the safety factor greater than 2 resulted form the excavation-only analysis.
In this study finite element analysis using hyperbolic model was performed to predict the characteristics of stress-strain behaviour on concrete face earth dam (CFED : a tentative name) raised with coarse-grained materials corresponding to the face slab bedding zone of concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD). The results of finite element analysis were compared with field monitoring data, and the comparison showed a good agreement. And, the analysis results including locus of maximum displacement, maximum stress, stress concentration, and irregular load transfer would be used to devise rational field monitoring schemes for construction management and quality control during construction of CFED.
The Ogcheon and Joseon Supergroups are distributed in the Bonghwajae area, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea which is located in the northeastern fore-end of the Ogcheon Metamorphic Zone. This paper researched the geological structures based on the geometric and kinematic characteristics and the forming sequence of the major multi-deformed rock and microstructures. Most of regional foliations are not the S0 bedding but the S0-1 composite foliations defined by the preferred orientation of stretching minerals, some are recognized as the S0-1-2 composite foliations by the preferred orientation of insoluble opaque minerals and cleavage lamella. The geological structures were formed at least by three phases of deformations i.e. NNE-SSW trending D1, E-W trending D2, N-S trending D3 compressions. The S0-1 composite foliation, which shows a similar zone-distribution trend of the constitution strata of the Ogcheon and Joseon Supergroups, trended WNW before D2 deformation, but it was reoriented into N-S which was parallel to the trend of S2 foliation by D2 deformation, and it was rearranged into NW, NE, N-S trends as it is now by D3 deformation. The structural characteristics of each deformation phase and the deformation history are very similar to those in the eastern domain of Busan area into which the Ogcheon and Joseon Supergroups in this area are extended as NNW trend. It is expected to be very valuable data in interpreting the tectonic evolution of the northeastern fore-end of the Ogcheon Metamorphic Zone.
A high-resolution seismic profile acquired across the northeastern boundary of the Pungam Basin, one of the Cretaceous sedimentary basins in Korea, has been interpreted to delineate subsurface geological structures across the basin boundary. We identified boundary faults and unconformity surfaces of the basin and divided sediment body into three seismic depositional units (Units I, II, and III from youngest to oldest). Inferred from fault geometry and type, northeastern part of the Pungam Basin has been formed by a strike-slip fault whereas the normal faults near the boundary were formed by transtensional movement along a fault zone. A 350-400 m thick sediment layer is overlying the Precambrian gneiss. Bedding planes of Unit III are dipping westward and are closely related to an anticline in the acoustic basement. Unit II is also tilted westward, suggesting that the eastern part of the fault zone was uplifted after deposition of lower part of the sedimentary body. Afterward, the uplifted sediment layers were eroded and transported to the western part of the basin. Chaotic reflection pattern of sedimentary Units II and III may suggest that strike-slip movement along the fault zone deformed basin-filled sediments.
The Danyang area consists of the thrust and folded sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic Era. The area is bounded by major tectonic units which are the Gagdong Thrust to the west and the Okdong Fault to the east. According to the structural analyses, the area is affected by polyphase deformation. This study establishes deformational sequence in the area. Mylonite zone along the Okdong Fault corresponds to the first generation of structures ($D_1$). $D_1$-structures are discrete shear zone in the Jangsan Formation and bedding parallel extensional deformation in the Cambro-Ordovician sequences. $D_2$-structures were formed prior to the sedimentation of the Jurassic Bansong Group, which are the NW-trending fold and linear structures. After sedimentation of the Bansong Group, the area is strongly affected by the Daebo Orogeny which produces NE-trending thrusts, folds and linear structures. Earlier structures were tightened and rotated toward NE. Some thrust faults did not propagate into the Bansong Group. It is suggested either the Bansong Group acted as a decoupling horizon or rest on unconformably on the thrust faults. The area is weakly affected by $D_4$-event of which structures are E-W trending folds and faults. The Jugryeong Fault clearly cut the earlier folds and thrust faults. The rocks within the fault zone were sliced and rotated during the strike-slip movements. Block rotation and transpressional features can be commonly observed.
