  • Flow and bed changes due to tributary inflow variation at the confluence of the Namhan River and the Geumdang Stream were analyzed in this study using a two-dimensional numerical model. As a result of the numerical analysis, the velocity downstream of the confluence was greater than the velocity upstream of the confluence in the main channel regardless of the magnitude of tributary inflow. However, as tributary discharge increased, the channel erosion was accelerated and the dry area was produced at the tributary. Due to the bed erosion at the tributary, sediment transport was increased and the eroded sediments were deposited in the confluence area. The deposition in the confluence area changed the flow direction at the main channel to the left side and the localized flow eroded the channel bed at the left side. Therefore, it is expected that bank failure due to continuous bed degradation is possible in this area.

  • More recently, there have been significant changes in the forms of channels due to runoff characteristics driven by climate changes and other alterations in basin/channel environments. Particularly, increasing local deposition in major channels is being observed nationwide. Of such phenomena, it is noteworthy that flood-plains show unidirectional growth and lowering of channels within compound channels in the form of a high-flow plain. These changes are supposed to affect management of the river ecology as well as flood control. In this study, the research on channels in Korea confirmed that the phenomenon of local deposition in those channels is actually taking place, rendering a problem to be urgently addressed. Previous studies on bed changes have been focused on low channels based on bed materials distributed over the channels. However, this research has proved that surface-layer deposition of a high-flow plain is closely related with changes in the conditions of ground surfaces and, ultimately, affects the bed of the entire channel as well. According to the intensive research on the condition of the high-flow plain of the mouth of the Han River, the silt deposited in the high-flow plain was the main cause of settlement/growth of vegetation. And this leads to landforming along with woods-forming, disturbing flood control as well as the normal river ecology.

  • To investigate the effects of weir construction on sediment characteristics of river bed, we conducted sediments sampling on the 9 locations near the weir, Kangchun, Yuju and Ipo in Namhan-River. Physical and chemical characteristics of sediments were analyzed by measuring particle size distribution, water content, Ignition loss, COD (Chemical Oxyzen Demand), TOC (Total Organic Carbon), TP (Total Phosphorus), SRP (Soluble Reactive Phosphorus) and TN (Total Nitrogen). Particle classification of all three weir sediments showed sandy loam that was caused by the river bed dredging. Due to the presence of weir, Ignition loss, COD, TOC, TP, SRP and TN showed similar trend such as the concentrations of upward weir had higher than those of downward weir. For the case of SRP concentration and C/N ratio, however, there is not much difference in the sediment characteristics compared to the those of sediments before weir construction. Therefore, It can be predicted that there are little effects of weir construction on sediment characteristics. However, weir construction could influence water quality of the river by controlling the transport and the accumulation of suspended materials from rainfall. Therefore, more intensive monitoring is required to examine the magnitude and patterns of sediment accumulation which could influence overlying water quality.

  • Monitoring sediment loads in natural rivers is the key process in river engineering, but it is costly and dangerous. In practice, suspended loads are directly measured, and total loads, which is a summation of suspended loads and bed loads, are estimated. This study proposes a real-time sediment discharge monitoring system using the horizontal acoustic Doppler current profiler (H-ADCP) and support vector regression (SVR). The proposed system is comprised of the SVR model for suspended sediment concentration (SVR-SSC) and for total loads (SVR-QTL), respectively. SVR-SSC estimates SSC and SVR-QTL mimics the modified Einstein procedure. The grid search with K-fold cross validation (Grid-CV) and the recursive feature elimination (RFE) were employed to determine SVR's hyperparameters and input variables. The two SVR models showed reasonable cross-validation scores (R2) with 0.885 (SVR-SSC) and 0.860 (SVR-QTL). During the time-series sediment load monitoring period, we successfully detected various sediment transport phenomena in natural streams, such as hysteresis loops and sensitive sediment fluctuations. The newly proposed sediment monitoring system depends only on the gauged features by H-ADCP without additional assumptions in hydraulic variables (e.g., friction slope and suspended sediment size distribution). This method can be applied to any ADCP-installed discharge monitoring station economically and is expected to enhance temporal resolution in sediment monitoring.

  • Excavation works on stream beds have been done for various reasons including aggregate collection, sediment dredging, bridge constructions, or laying pipes under the ground. These activities may cause significant loadings of SS (suspended solids) resulting in water pollution and other detrimental effects to the surrounding environment. This research investigates application potential of a fickian diffustion model, derived from two dimensional advection-diffusion equation through some simplifying assumptions, as a planning tool for the estimation of SS loadings from excavation works and evaluation fo pollution prevention measures in case that sophisticated numerical simulation models are not applicable due to various practical reasons. Through a case study of the Juncheon stream in the Donghae City on the Kangwondo Province, this study demonstrates applicability of the fickian diffustion model as a practical method for the preliminary estimation of Ss loadings from excavation works and evaluation of performance of fabrics made of synthetic fiber for the reduction of downstream SS concentration with deficient field data.

  • Sediment yield and sediment transport in a basin bring about decrease of conveyance by the change of bed section, and have an influence on an aggravation of water quality and freshwater ecosystem. This study is to analyze the characteristics of outflow sediment according to land-use in Mushim-cheon flowing through forest area, farmland area and urban area. The upper stream of Mushim-cheon consists of forest area and farmland area. The suspended sediment is observed through 10 rainfall events in 5 sites. As a result of analyzing characteristics of landuse, the site of Bangse-gyo takes up 69% of Mushim-cheon, and farmland area(27.1%) and forest area(63.7%) take up 90.8% in Bangse-gyo. Accordingly, these two areas have the high possibility to occur sediment. The suspended sediment of this site shows the highest concentration. Transferring to the downstream and the urban, the concentration of suspended sediment gets decreased. The suspended sediment occurred in the upper stream of Mushim-cheon prior to Bangse-gyo has an influence on the downstream, and has a slight influence on the urban area. Also relational formula about suspended sediemtn and discharge is leaded. As a result of this formula, $R^{2}$ is 0.506 in the upper stream and is 0.656 in the downstream.

  • A Model Tree technique of data mining was applied to derive optimal equations for sediment discharge assessment based on the measured sediment data and then to evaluate stable channel design for Naesung Stream. The sediment discharge formula as a function of channel width, velocity, depth, slope and median grain diameter which was developed by a Model Tree technique with sediment discharge data measured in Korean River had a high goodness-of-fit between measured and calculated results. In case of the sediment discharge formula as a function of channel width, velocity, depth and median grain diameter which was developed by a Model Tree technique with sediment discharge data only measured in Naesung Stream represented the highest goodness-of-fit. Two types of sediment discharge formulas were applied to evaluate stable channel analysis for Yonghyeol Station of Naesung Stream. As a result, bed erosion was expected in the study section compared to the current section. It was also presented that the be slope might be changed to be a milder slope than the current slope to reach equilibrium condition in the long term.

  • The assessment of PIV to measure the mean velocity and turbulence was carried out over a train of fixed two-dimensional dunes. The agreement between the PIV and LDV is good enough even in regions of flow reversals and high shear. Though limited in the wall normal direction field-of-view, PIV provides instantaneous flow fields, which reveal the complex nature of flow over dunes, as well as more sophisticated analyses such as two-point space correlation and quadrant analysis with a reasonable accuracy The present study is expected to be directly applied to more complex flow such as sediment transport.

  • To study the characters of surface sediment and to describe the seasonal depositional environment as a result of sedimentation process off Byun-San Peninsula, a total 61 samples of surface sediment (32 samples in summer; 29 samples in winter) were collected and analysed. A digitized depth data from sea chart and echosounding profiles along five trans-sections were helpful for understanding the morphological factors. The types classified by the characters of surface sediment are type I (sand, S), type II (silty sand, zS), and type ill (sandy silt, sZ). Mean grain size varies from 2.11 to 7.81 ${\Phi}$. The positive-skewness shows the typical tide-dominated environment. The sediment type of the northwestern stations is medium sand and the sorting value is 0.5~1.4 ${\Phi}$ of well/moderately sorted. Meanwhile, other stations are composed of muddy sands and sandy muds transported from rivers and offshore. These sediment types toward inshore change gradually from silty sand to sandy silt. According to the C/M diagram, there are three major transport modes of sediment: bed load (Mode A), graded suspension (Mode B), and suspension (Mode C), correlating with north-eastern sandy area, middle part of silty-sand area, and southern sandy-silt area, respectively. The result of Principal Component Analysis shows also similar pattern of sediment types. In result, sediment texture of type III tends to be finer and more poorly-sorted than that of type II and sediment facies are correlateed with sedimentation process.
