  • A lab-scale fluidized bed heat exchanger for waste gas heat recovery is devised and tested. Compared to our previous works on fluidized bed type system with a single riser, the present heat exchanger system is featured by its multiple (four) risers to handle increased amount of exhaust gas. Particles are introduced to the main hot gas stream alongside the pipe circumference near riser inlets. The heat exchanger performance and pressure drop are evaluated through experiments for the present gas-to-water heat exchanger system.

  • To enhance the performance of SEWGS system by holding the WGS catalyst in a SEWGS reactor using bed inserts, effects of insert geometry and shape of WGS catalysts on CO conversion were measured and investigated. Small scale fluidized bed reactor was used as experimental apparatus and WGS catalyst (particle and tablet) and sand were used as bed materials. The parallel wall type and cross type bed inserts were used to hold the WGS catalysts. The CO conversion with steam/CO ratio was determined based on the exit gas analysis. The measured CO conversion using the bed inserts showed high value comparable to physical mixing cases. Moreover, gas flow direction was confirmed by bed pressure drop measurement for each case. Most of input gas flowed through the catalyst side when we charged tablet type catalyst into the bed insert and this can cause low $CO_2$ capture efficiency because the possibility of contact between input gas and $CO_2$ absorbent is low in this case. New bed insert geometry was proposed based on the results from this study to enhance contact between input gas and WGS catalyst and $CO_2$ absorbent.

  • The effects of gas velocity and solid circulation rate on the axial solid holdup distribution have been determined in a 10 mm-I.D. ${\times}$ 800 mm-high circulating fluidized bed plasma reactor under reduced pressure (1torr). Polystyrene polymer powder and nitrogen gas are used as solid and gas materials respectively. The change of solid circulation rate by a large gas flow rate of the riser (40~80 sccm) is also possible by a relatively small gas flow rate of the solid recirculation part (6.6~9.9 sccm). The solid circulation rate in the reactor under reduced pressure increases with increasing aeration velocity in the solid recirculation part. The axial solid holdup in the riser decreases from the dense at the bottom to the dilute phase at the top section of the riser. Solid holdups at the axial positions in the riser increase linearly with increasing solid circulating velocity. From these results, we could determine the position of plasma load for good plasma ignition, maintain and plasma reaction.

  • Methods to distinguish flow regimes in gas-solid fluidized bed have been investigated by adopting the concept of chaos theory. Pressure fluctuations have been chosen as a state variable for the analysis of the system. Pressure fluctuations obtained from differential pressure transducer have been investigated using the chaos analysis (Correlation dimension and Kolmogorov entropy) as well as the average and standard deviation. As a result, fluidization regimes in gas-solid fluidized bed can be distinguished by statistics methods as the average and standard deviation. Also, Correlation dimension and Kolmogorov entropy could be used to classify the fluidization regimes.

  • Recently, comsumption of fossil fuel is causing many problems(oilflation, global warming, environmental pollution). For this reason Renewable energy is now becoming the center of interest as a solution to these problems. Bioethanol, especially, is able to substitute petroleum as fuel; making it a viable and promising renewable energy. In order to production of fuel bioethanol, Dehydration process is essential. Azeotropic distillation, extractive and pressure swing absorption(PSA) process are some of possible dehydration process, out of which, PSA process is attractive since it required less energy and lower setup cost. In this study, we produced fuel bioethanol using 2-step PSA(3 bed + 2 bed) process for more efficient and economical process. Through this study, we produced fuel bioethanol using 2-step PSA process and concentration of fuel bioethanol was 99.54wt%(feed ethanol: 92.4wt%). We expected that because of efficient use of absorbents(zeolite), 2 step PSA process contribute to economical operation.

  • In this study, the pressure drop behavior of single- and two-phase flows of air and water through the porous beds filled with uniform and non-uniform sized spherical particles was examined. The pressure drop data in the single-phase flow experiments for the uniform particle beds agreed well with the original Ergun correlation. The results from the two-phase flow experiments were analyzed using numerical results based on three types of previous models. In the experiments for the uniform particle beds, the data on the two-phase pressure drop clearly showed the effect of the flow regime transition with a variation in the gas flow rate under stagnant liquid condition. The numerical analyses indicated that the predictability of the previous models for the experimental data relied mainly on the sub-models of the flow regime transitions and interfacial drag. In the experiments for the non-uniform particle beds, the two-phase pressure loss could be predicted well with numerical calculations based on the effective particle diameter. However, the previous models failed to accurately predict the counter-current flooding limit observed in the experiments. Finally, we propose a relation of falling liquid velocity into the particle bed by gravity to appropriately simulate the CCFL phenomenon.

  • The dynamic characteristics of adsorption using an adsorption bed packed with Li-X zeolite (UOP) were studied through the breakthrough experiments of $H_2/CH_4$ (90:10 vol%), $H_2/CO$ (90:10 vol%) and $H_2/CO_2$ (80:20 vol%) mixtures. Effects of feed flow rate (6.24~10.24 LPM) and adsorption pressure (6.1 bar~10.1 bar) in the Li-X zeolite bed with 2.7 cm of inside diameter and 80 cm of bed length were observed. The smaller feed rate or the higher operating pressure, resulted in the longer of the breakthrough time and the breakthrough curve have tailing due to temperature variance in the bed. The adsorption dynamics of the Li-X zeolite bed were predicted by using LDF model with feed flow and pressure dependent diffusivity. The prediction and experimental data were analyzed with a nonisothermal, nonadiabatic model, dual-site langmuir (DSL) isotherm

  • Solids flow characteristics have been determined in a pressurized solids recycle systems of silica sand particles for the application in a pressurized CFB(PCFB). The solids recycle system is composed of a downcomer(0.10 m i.d. 2.25 m high) and a loop-seal(0.10 m i.d.). The silica sand($d_p=240{\mu}m$, ${\rho}_s=2582kg/m^3$) particles were transported at room temperature and system pressure($P_{sys}$) up to 0.71 MPa using air. Solids mass flux($G_s$) increases with increasing system pressure at constant aeration rate. Pressure gradient, solids velocity and actual gas velocity increase with increasing $P_{sys}$ at constant aeration rate. The Pressure drop number($\Phi$) on pressure gradient in downcomer has been correlated with Transportation number(Tr). Pressure drop across the loop-seal increases with increasing of $G_s$ irrespective of variation of $P_{sys}$. The obtained $G_s$ and Transportation number(Tr) have been correlated with the experimental variables.

  • Effects of pressure, temperature, gas velocity, and fuel flow rate on reduction of three oxygen carriers, SDN70, OC-1, OC-2, were measured and investigated in a pressurized bubbling fluidized bed reactor. Among three oxygen carriers OC-2 was selected as the best oxygen carrier in view of fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity. However, all oxygen carriers showed good reactivity even at high pressure conditions. SDN70 particle showed maximum reactivity at $900^{\circ}C$ and low reactivity at $950^{\circ}C$. However, reactivity decay of OC-1 and OC-2 particles at high temperature condition was negligible. The fuel conversion and the $CO_2$ selectivity slightly decreased as the gas velocity increased, whereas they are slightly increased as the fuel concentration increased.
