  • Korean bell is a macroscopically axi-symmetrical structure, but has a slight asymmetry due to complex patterns and casting irregularity. Small asymmetry separates one vibration mode into a mode pair with slight frequency difference. The mode pair interferes and creates a beat. The vivid beat with an appropriate period makes the bell sound magnificent and lively feeling. In this study, we propose a method to make the vivid beat using artificial dumshoi. This method creates the vivid beat by designing artificial dumshoi that overwhelms the bell asymmetry. To this end, the asymmetry of Korean bell is quantified by analyzing the beat period data of a number of Korean bells cast in modern times. Based on the measured beat period data, the magnitude of asymmetry is quantified using an equivalent bell model and artificial dumshoi is applied. The movement of mode pair by dumshoi is predicted through finite element analysis. Finally, a design example of the artificial dumshoi for clear beat is introduced.

  • This paper proposes a low complexity super resolution algorithm for frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems for foreign object debris (FOD) detection. FOD radar has a requirement to detect foreign object in small units in a large area. However, The fast Fourier transform (FFT) method, which is most widely used in FMCW radar, has a disadvantage in that it can not distinguish between adjacent targets. Super resolution algorithms have a significantly higher resolution compared with the detection algorithm based on FFT. However, in the case of the large number of samples, the computational complexity of the super resolution algorithms is drastically high and thus super resolution algorithms are difficult to apply to real time systems. In order to overcome this disadvantage of super resolution algorithm, first, the proposed algorithm coarsely obtains the frequency of the beat signal by employing FFT. Instead of using all the samples of the beat signal, the number of samples is adjusted according to the frequency of the beat signal. By doing so, the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the computational complexity of multiple signal classifier (MUSIC) algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves accurate location even though it has considerably lower complexity than the conventional super resolution algorithms.

  • By their rapid and periodic actions, the cilia of the human respiratory tract play an important role in clearing inhaled noxious particles. Based on the automated image-processing technique, we studied ciliary beat frequency (CBF) objectively and quantitatively. Microscopic ciliary images were transformed into digitized gray ones through an image-grabber, and from these we extracted signals or CBF. By means of a FFT, maximum peak frequencies were detected as CBFs in each partitioned block or the entire digitized field. With these CBFs, we composed distribution maps visualiy showing the spatial distribution of CBFs. Through distribution maps of CBF, the whole aspects of CBF changes or cells and the difference of CBF of neighboring cells can be easily measured and detected. Histogram statistics calculated from the user-defined polygonal window can show the local dominant frequency presumed to be the CBF of a cell or a crust the region includes.

  • There is a growing need for a care system that can continuously monitor, manage and effectively relieve stress for modern people. In recent years, mobile healthcare devices capable of measuring heart rate have become popular, and many stress monitoring techniques using heart rate variability analysis have been actively proposed and commercialized. In addition, respiratory biofeedback methods are used to provide stress relieving services in environments using mobile healthcare devices. In this case, breathing information should be measured well to assess whether the user is doing well in biofeedback training. In this study, we extracted the heart beat interval signal from the PPG and used the oscillator based notch filter based on the IIR band pass filter to track the strongest frequency in the heart beat interval signal. The respiration signal was then estimated by filtering the heart beat interval signal with this frequency as the center frequency. Experimental results showed that the number of breathing could be measured accurately when the subject was guided to take a deep breath. Also, in the timeing measurement of inspiration and expiration, a time delay of about 1 second occurred. It is expected that this will provide a respiratory biofeedback service that can assess whether or not breathing exercise are performed well.

  • Drone detection in FMCW radar system needs complex techniques because a drone beat frequency is highly dynamic and unpredictable. Therefore, the current static signal processing algorithms cannot show appropriate detection accuracy. With dynamic signal fluctuation and environmental clutters, it can fail to detect a drone or make false detection. It affects to the radar system integrity and safety. Constant false alarm rate (CFAR), one of famous static signal process algorithm is effective for static environment. But for drone detection, it shows low detection accuracy. In this paper, we suggest neural network based FMCW radar system for detecting a drone. We use recurrent neural network (RNN) because it is the effective neural network for signal processing. In our FMCW radar system, one transmitter emits FMCW signal and four-way fixed receivers detect reflected drone beat frequency. The coordinate of the drone can be calculated with four receivers information by triangulation. Therefore, RNN only learns and inferences reflected drone beat frequency. It helps higher learning and detection accuracy. With several drone flight experiments, RNN shows false detection rate and detection accuracy as 21.1% and 96.4%, respectively.

  • In this paper, level instrument is implemented using beat frequency for distance measurement which means the difference between Tx and Rx signal frequency from FMCW Radar Level Transmitter. Beat frequency is analyzed through Fast Fourier Transform of which frequency precision can be improved by applying Zoom FFT. Distance precision is improved from 146.5[mm] to 5[mm] using the advantage of Zoom FFT which can raise the frequency precision without changing the sampling frequency or FFT point number to be fixed in the beginning of designing signal processing. Also, measurement error can be reduced within 2[mm] by incresing the FFT points using the method of Spline interpolation. For verifying the effectiveness of this Zoom FFT to FMCW Radar Level Transmitter, test bench is made to measure the distance for every 1[mm] between 700[mm] and 2000[mm] and measurement error can be checked in the range of ${\pm}2$[mm].

  • In this paper, radiation characteristics of the beating sound are analytically investigated on a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell. The cylindrical shell isan efficient model to consider the beat characteristics of Korean bells. Slight asymmetry in Korean bells makes mode pair which has close frequency components and the interaction of each mode pair produces beating sound. Based on the analytical model, the radiated sound field is determined. Using the sound beat map, the beating sound vs. direction and distance is investigated. Finally, results of the theoretical method are compared with those of the boundary element method to verify the validity.

  • We demonstrate the wavelength swept source and signal processing for the frequency domain optical coherence tomography. The laser output performance is improved by using a semiconductor optical amplifier with a booster amplifier. The laser generates 14 mW of average power of which wavelength shift in the lasing spectral shape is compensated. Adopting a Fabry-Perot etalon and digital signal processing, the broadening of the beat frequency due to the variance of wavelength-sweep-velocity is calibrated. The optical coherence tomography system shows 154.4 kHz of axial scanning speed, 0.95mm of depth range, and $12{\pm}0.37{\mu}m$ of axial resolution.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate aerodynamic characteristics on reduced frequency of flapping wings. The half span of the wing is 28cm, and the mean chord length of wing is 10cm. In flight, the Reynolds Number range of birds is about $10^4$, and the reduced frequency during a level flight is 0.25. The experimental variables of present study were set to have similar conditions with the bird flight's one. The freestream velocities in a wind tunnel were 2.50, 3.75 and $5.00^m/s$, and the corresponding Reynolds numbers were $1.7{\times}10^4$, $2.5{\times}10^4$ and $3.3{\times}10^4$, respectively. The wing beat frequencies of an experimental model were 2, 3 and 4Hz, and the corresponding reduced frequency was decided between 0.1 and 0.5. Aerodynamic forces of an experimental flapping model were measured by using 2 axis load-cell. Inertial forces measured in a vacuum chamber were removed from measuring forces in the wind tunnel in order to acquire pure aerodynamic forces. Hall sensors and laser trigger were used to make sure the exact position of wings during the flapping motion. Results show that the ratio of downstroke in a wing beat cycle is increased as a wing beat frequency increases. The instantaneous lift coefficient is the maximum value at the end of downstroke of flapping wing model. It is found that a critical reduced frequency with large lift coefficient is existed near k=0.25.

  • This study proposes a method of an equivalent bell model in order to tune the beat period of a Korean bell. In a Korean bell having a slight asymmetry, each circumferential mode splits into a mode pair which has a slight difference in frequency, and the interaction of the mode pair makes a beat in vibration and sound. An equivalent bell model which consists of an axi-symmetric bell and an equivalent point mass, has the same mode property as in a real bell. The equivalent bell model is constructed by the finite element analysis based upon the theory of a revolutionary shell. Using the equivalent bell model, the beat period is predicted when the bell thickness is locally decreased to improve the beat property. The predicted result is verified by experiment on a test bell. The proposed method is useful to save the time required for tuning the beat period of a large bell.
