  • Cold-formed steel is widely used in steel structures, especially in transmission towers, because of advantages such as low weight, high strength, excellent mechanical properties, etc. However, there is not a special design code for cold-formed steel use in transmission towers in China. For this study, a total of 105 compression members were tested statically to investigate the bearing capacity of cold-formed steel members under different boundary conditions in transmission towers. The test results were compared to the results predicted by the current design codes. For deeper insight, additional coupled members were simulated using finite element analysis. An improved design method was developed based on the experimental and analytical results.

  • There are separate merits and demerits to wood and steel. The combination of wood and steel as a compound section is able to improve the properties of both and ultimately increase their final bearing capacity. The composite cross-section made of steel and wood has higher hardness while showing more ductility and the local buckling of steel is delayed or completely prevented. The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of composite columns enclosed in wooden logs and the hollow sections of steel that will be examined in a laboratory environment under the axial load to determine the final bearing capacity and sample deformation. In terms of methodology, steel sheet and carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheet (FRP) are tested to construct hollow rectangular sections and reinforce timber. Besides, the method of connecting hollow sections and timber including glue and screw has been also investigated. As a result, timber lumber enclosed with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheets in which fibers are horizontally located at 90° are more resistant with better ductility.

  • This paper presented an investigation into steel tubes encased high-strength concrete (STHC) composite walls, wherein steel tubes were embedded at the boundary elements of high-strength concrete walls. A series of cyclic loading tests was conducted to evaluate the failure pattern, hysteresis characteristics, load-bearing capacity, deformability, and strain distribution of STHC composite walls. The test results demonstrated that the bearing capacity and ductility of the STHC composite walls improved with the embedding of steel tubes at the boundary elements. An analytical method was then established to predict the flexural bearing capacity of the STHC composite walls, and the calculated results agreed well with the experimental values, with errors of less than 10%. Finally, a finite element modeling (FEM) was developed via the OpenSees program to analyze the mechanical performance of the STHC composite wall. The FEM was validated through test results; additionally, the influences of the axial load ratio, steel tube strength, and shear-span ratio on the mechanical properties of STHC composite walls were comprehensively investigated.

  • This study's primary aim is to check the existence of a representative volume element for granular materials and determine the link between the properties (responses) of macro structures and the size of the discrete particle assembly used to represent a constitutive relation in a two-scale model. In our two-scale method the boundary value problem on the macro level was solved using finite element method, based on the Cosserat continuum; the macro stresses and modulus were obtained using a solution of discrete particle assemblies at certain element integration points. Meanwhile, discrete particle assemblies were solved using discrete element method under boundary conditions provided by the macro deformation. Our investigations focused largely on the size effects of the discrete particle assembly and the radius of the particle on macro properties, such as deformation stiffness, bearing capacity and the residual strength of the granular structure. According to the numerical results, we suggest fitting formulas linking the values of different macro properties (responses) and size of discrete particle assemblies. In addition, this study also concerns the configuration and displacement fluctuation of discrete particle assemblies on the micro level, accompanied with the evolution of bearing capacity and deformation on the macro level.

  • Loads applied on the floor are transferred through beams to columns. The beams can be designed as both end fixed or simple beams. The load bearing capacity of a beam depends on each boundary condition. However, when the load bearing capacity of a beam is evaluated in fire tests, all kinds of beams are tested using simple beam conditions. In this study, an analytical method performed using heat transfer theory and heat stress analysis based on the mechanical and thermal properties of SS-400 steel at high temperature. This method was used to clarify the differences between the two types of boundary conditions at normal and high temperature. The results show that the load bearing capacity of a both-end fixed beam at high temperature is superior to that of a simple beam. Therefore, the application of simple beam conditions in fire tests for evaluation of load bearing capacity is conservatively safe compared to fixed boundary conditions.

  • When eccentric or inclined load acts on foundation of the port & harbor structures, partial safety factors of bearing capacity limit state were estimated using reliability analysis. Current Korean technical standards of port and harbor structures recommend to estimate the geotechnical bearing capacity using the simplified Bishop method. In practice, however, simple method of comparing ground reaction resistance with allowable bearing capacity has been mostly used by design engineers. While the simple method gives just one number fixed but somewhat convenient, it could not consider the uncertainty of soil properties depending on site by site. Thus, in this paper, partial safety factors for each design variable were determined so that designers do perform reliability-based level 1 design for bearing capacity limit state. For these, reliability index and their sensitivities were gained throughout the first order reliability method(FORM), and the variability of the random variables was also considered. In order to verify partial safety factors determined here, a comparison with foreign design codes was carried out and were found to be reasonable in practical design.

  • In this paper, the effects of crude oil contamination on the geotechnical properties of sand such as compaction characteristics, shear strength, permeability, and bearing capacity are presented. The test results indicate that the compaction characteristics are somewhat influenced by oil contamination. The angle of internal friction of sand based on total stress analysis decreases due to the presence of oil within the pore spaces in Band. The bearing capacity of sand is significantly influenced by oil contamination.

  • Several soil parameters such as particle characteristics, geological element, drainage and loading conditions are influenced on the shear strength of soil. The characteristics of soil particles are important factor to the shear strength of soil. However, this component is not well considered in the determination of soil strength in Korea. The particle shape of sand was analyzed by utilizing SEM(Scanning Electron Micrograph) and compared its results in terms of aspect ratio, angularity and roughness. Based on the determined soil parameters, the ultimate bearing capacity of sandy ground was estimated by using Terzaghi bearing capacity equation.

  • Selective surface densification is a tool for improving the mechanical properties of PM steels, such that the requirements for highly loaded gears can be matched. This paper describes the manufacturing and the properties of a helical P/M gear. The gear performance was evaluated on a 3-shaft back to back test rig, on a load bearing test rig and on a sound test bench. The results of these tests are presented and compared to data obtained from solid steel gear with identical geometry and surface quality. This comparison indicates that P/M gears have a load bearing capacity and noise level which are both well comparable to solid steel gears.

  • Recently a concept of pile-tip enlarged PHC pile (Ext-PHC pile), for use in the auger-drilled construction method, has been developed and is being implemented in practice. A series of field axial load tests on both PHC and Ext-PHC piles were conducted at an experimental site. In addition, a parametric study on a number of influencing factors was made using a validated finite element model. The field axial load tests indicated an enhanced load-settlement characteristics for the Ext-PHC piles compared with the PHC piles, giving approximately 50% increase in the end bearing capacity. Also found in the results of the parametric study was that the increase in the end bearing capacity of Ext-PHC piles slightly varies with the mechanical properties of supporting ground as well as pile length, in the range of 1.25 to 1.4 time that of PHC. Overall, the results of the field tests as well as the numerical study confirmed that the end bearing capacity of PHC pile can be improved by the concept of.Ext-PHC pile.
