Knowledge based fault diagnosis has a limitation in determining the cause and scheme for the fault, because it detects faults from signal pattern only Therefore, model-based fault diagnosis is requested to determine the fault by analyzing output of the equipment from its dynamic model. This research shows a method how to devise the automaton of system as a model for normal and faulty condition through the reduction of handling data by quantization of vibration signals and the example which is concerning to the bearing of ATM. The developed model based fault diagnosis was applied to detect the faulty bearing of ATM, which results.

Large dynamic loads act on the rotor in rotary compressors. There are unbalance forces due to eccentric rotation parts and gas forces induced by the pressure difference between compression and suction gases. Rotor-journal bearing system is nonlinear since the stiffness and damping coef-ficients of the lubrication oil film are not constant in the bearings. in this paper the program for predicting the behaviors of rotor-journal bearing system of rotary compressor is developed. Finite element modeling is used to analyze the flexible rotor. The numerical results are compared with experimental results.
Among other critical conditions in rotor systems the large non-linear vibration excited by bearing non-linearity causes the rotor failure. For reducing this catastrophic failure and predictive detection of this phenomenon the analysis of orthotropic bearing non-linearity in rotor system using higher order frequency response functions (HFRFs) is conducted and is shown to be theoretically feasible as that of non-rotating structures. The complex HFRFs based on the Volterra series are newly developed for the process and investigated their features by using the simple forms of the FRFs associated with the forward and the backward modes.

In this paper actively controlled air bearing is investigated to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficients. The actively controlled air beairng is composed of an air bearing, a gap sensor, a controller, and a piezo actuator. By controlling the position of air bearing with piezo actuator, the position of floating object is controlled. In this study the proportional-Integral-Derivative controller is employed. Active air bearing is investigated numerically and experimentally. There is good agreement between the simulation and the experimental results. It is shown that the stiffness and damping characteristics and positioning experimental results. It is shown that the stiffness and damping characteristics and positioning accuracy of air bearing can be improved by means of adopting actively controlled air bearing.

This paper develops the theory for a novel fault-tolerant, permanent magnet biased, 4-active-pole, double plane, homopolar magnetic bearing. The Lagrange Multiplier optimization with equality constraints is utilized to calculate the optimal distribution matrices for the failed bearing. If any of the 4 coils fail, the remaining three coil currents change via a novel distribution matrix such that the same opposing pole, C-core type, control fluxes as those of the un-failed bearing are produced. Magnetic flux coupling in the magnetic bearing core and the optimal current distribution helps to produce the same c-core fluxes as those of unfailed bearing even if one coil suddenly fails. Thus the magnetic forces and the load capacity of the bearing remain invariant throughout the failure event. It is shown that the control fluxes to each active pole planes are successfully isolated. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the new theory.

Applying a general coupled lateral and torsional vibration finite element model of gear pair element, this paper intends to look into in detail the coupled lateral and torsional vibration characteristics of a turbo-chiller rotor bearing system, having a bull-pinion speed increasing gear. Investigations have been carried out systematically by comparing the uncoupled and coupled natural frequencies and their mode shapes upon varying the gear mesh stiffness with considerations on rotating speeds, and also by comparing the strain energies of lateral and torsional vibration modes. Results hale shown that some modes may hale the coupled lateral and torsional mode characteristics as the gear mesh stiffness Increases over a certain value, and moreover that their associated dominant modes may be different from their initial modes, j.e., a certain dominant mode may change from an initial torsional one to a lateral one or from an initial lateral one to a torsional one.

For the application into a 1 kWh flywheel energy storage system(FESS), this paper presents the design scheme of radial and axial hybrid magnetic bearings which use bias fluxes generated by permanent magnets. In particular, the axial hybrid magnetic bearing is newly proposed in this paper, in which a permanent magnet is arranged in axial direction so that it can support the rotor weight as well as provide a bias flux for axial magnetic bearing. Such hybrid magnetic bearings consume very low power, compared with conventional electromagnetic bearings. In this paper, to stably support a 140 kg flywheel rotor without contact, design process is explained in detail, and magnetic circuit analysis and three-dimensional finite element analysis are carried out to determine the design parameters and predict the performance of the magnetic bearings.

The early detection of the bearing defects in rotating machinery is very important since the critical failure of bearing causes a machinery shutdown. However it is not easy to detect the vibration signal caused by the initial defects of bearing because of the high level of random noise. A signal processing technique, called the adaptive line enhancer(ALE) as one of adaptive filter, is used in this study. This technique is to eliminate random noise with little a prior knowledge of the noise and signal characteristics. Also we propose the optimal methods fir selecting the three main ALE parameters such as correlation length filter order and adaptation constant. Vibration signals f3r three abnormal bearings, including inner and outer raceways and ball defects, were acquired by Anderon(angular derivative of radius on) meter. The experimental results showed that ALE is very useful f3r detecting the bearing defective signals masked by random noise.

This paper presents an analytical method to Investigate the stability of a hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves. The dynamic coefficients of the hydrodynamic Journal bearing are calculated using the FEM and the perturbation method. The linear equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system because the dynamic coefficients have time-varying components due to the rotating grooves, even in the steady state. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by the comparison of the stability chart with the time response of the whirl radius obtained from the equations of motion. This research shows that the instability of the hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves increases with increasing eccentricity and with decreasing groove number, which play the major roles in increasing the average and variation of stiffness coefficients, respectively. It also shows that a high rotational speed is another source of instability by increasing the stiffness coefficients without changing the damping coefficients.

Most mechanical systems are now operating consistently and getting faster due to the development of automation systems. Peoples' dependence on machines have increased as when problems occur within the mechanical system, personal injury and production loss may come as a result, as most of the mechanical system's malfunctions are caused by the failure of the rotational bearing. What we need now is a maintenance system that can warn us when it detects abnormal conditions before significant damage occurs to the bearing. In this study, we have developed an acoustic emissions sensor that can figure if the bearing works under the normal condition. With this acoustic emissions sensor, we can inspect the bearing for defects by using the Heterodyne technique, which converts the ultrasound signal into audio, as a signal conditioning process.
