  • This paper presents a method to investigate the characteristics of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor due to elevated temperature considering the variation of the clearance as well as the lubricant viscosity. Iterative finite element analysis of the heat conduction and the thermal deformation is performed to determine the viscosity and clearance of a hydrodynamic bearing due to elevated temperature until the temperature of the bearing area converges. Proposed method is verified by comparing the calculated temperature with the measured one in elevated surrounding temperature as well as in room temperature. This research shows that elevated temperature changes the clearance as well as the lubricant viscosity of the hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor. Once the viscosity and clearance of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor are determined, finite element analysis of the Reynolds equation is performed to investigate the static and dynamic characteristics of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor due to elevated temperature. It also shows that the variation of clearance due to elevated temperature is another important design consideration to affect the static and dynamic characteristics of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor.

  • Fluid film tilting pad journal bearings are widely used for large steam turbines. However, bearing problems by pad fluttering, such as fatigue damage in the upper unloaded pad, the break of locking pins and the wear of pinholes etc., are frequently taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of the present work is to investigate on the mechanism of pad fluttering and the prevention of pad fluttering with the variation of preload(m) in a tilting pad journal bearing. It is estimated that upper pad is easy to flutter because the film shape of upper pad is diverged one from the analysis of moment direction acting on pivot point. Effective preload range in order to be statically loaded pad under all operating conditions is suggested as m>0.5. Also, as a bearing that can be prevented pad fluttering, design modified bearing is suggested. For the adjustment in actual steam turbines, bearing and rotor dynamic analysis are performed to identify bearing characteristics and to verify the reliability of rotor-bearing system.

  • This study is focused on the structural dynamic responses, i.e., vibration analysis results of the high-accuracy observation multi-axial camera, which is installed and operated for the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) and helicopter etc. And, the authors newly suggest a modeling technology of the ball bearing applied to the camera by using three-axis spring elements. The vibration analysis results well agreed to the randum vibration test results. Also, the vibration responses characteristics of the multi-axial camera through the time history analysis of the random vibration were analyzed and evaluated. The above results can be applied to the FE-modeling of the ball bearings used for the space cameras.

  • Induction motors are the workhorse of our industry because of their versatility and robustness. The diagnosis of mechanical load and power transmission system failures is usually carried out through mechanical signals such as vibration signatures, acoustic emissions, motor speed envelope. The motor faults including mechanical rotor imbalances, broken rotor bar, bearing failure and eccentricities problems are reflected in electric, electromagnetic and mechanical quantities. The recent research has been directed toward electrical monitoring of the motor with emphasis on inspecting the stator current of the motor, The stator current spectrum has been widely used for fault detection in induction motor systems. The motor current signature analysis is the useful technique to assess machine electrical condition. This paper describes the motor condition detected by the current signatures Paralleled with vibration signatures analysis of induction motors with the roller bearing and the journal bearing type for large vertical pumps in power plant as examples to discuss for motor fault detection and diagnosis.

  • To predict the noise and vibration characteristics of induction motor system, it is necessary to develop the mathematical model including all the mechanical elements such as shaft, blower, rotor, fan, bearing, case and mounting parts. Coupling effect between case-mount system and rotor- shaft system including shaft, blower, rotor, fan and bearing is examined. Impact exciting experimentation was done in order to verify vibration model of the induction motor system. From experimental results, we can appreciate that the natural frequencies of induction motor system are in good agrements with analysis.

  • This paper presents numerical analysis result of rotor-bearing system of a multi-stage high pressure pump. Especially resonance possibility, stability and damping factor are estimated for a selected commercial multi-stage high pressure pump. The result shows that it is not easy to avoid resonance of rotor-bearing system against main excitation forces which are residual unbalance force and pressure pulsation. This makes damping effect be more important.

  • A rotor dynamic analysis is implemented to confirm the vibration stability of the high speed centrifugal chiller coupled with gear system. As the rotating speed of the centrifugal chiller under investigation is increased up to 17605rpm at the pinion rotating part, the bearing instability is getting higher and, furthermore, the rotor-bearing system might experience a few critical speed which lead to system failure due to the excessive vibration. In this study, considering the loading capacity and stability conditions, offset journal bearings are adopted for the pinion rotating system and general cylindrical bearings are used for motor part. From the modal analysis, the system is found to be stable as the critical damping ratio which shows the damping characteristics of the system are positive over all operating ranges, and in addition, the synchronous rotating frequency does not come across with any whirl natural frequency. From these results the authors confirm the vibration stability of the rotor-bearing system suggested in this study.

  • In this study, the bearing defects were modeled and the vibration of ball bearing faults was presented for the defective pattern. The vibration signal was measured for the single and multiple defected ball bearing at the various defect positions and rotation speed, and then the signal components using the HFRT(high frequency resonance technique) were analyzed by FFT. The experimental data analysis has shown that the frequencies generated in the single or multiple defected ball bearings appear with the characteristic defect frequency and harmonics of ball pass frequency peak. Signal processing by HFRT makes it possible not only to detect the presence of a defect but also to diagnose the defect part of the bearing.

  • This research presents an analytical model to investigate the stability due to the ball bearing waviness in a rotating system supported by two ball bearings. The stiffness of a ball bearing changes periodically due to the waviness in the rolling elements as the rotor rotates, and it can be calculated by differentiating the nonlinear contact forces. The linearized equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system in the form of Mathieu's equation, because the stiffness coefficients have time-varying components due to the waviness. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as the simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving the Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by comparing the stability chart with the time responses of the vibration model suggested by prior researches. This research shows that the waviness in the rolling elements of a ball bearing generates the time-varying component of the stiffness coefficient, whose frequency is called the frequency of the parametric excitation. It also shows that the instability takes place from the positions in which the ratio of the natural frequency to the frequency of the parametric excitation corresponds to i/2 (i= 1,2,3..).
