Earlier studies on hollow-circular rubber bearings, all of which are conducted for steel-reinforced bearings, indicate that the hole presence not only decreases the compression modulus of the bearing but also increases the maximum shear strain developing in the bearing due to compression, both of which are basic design parameters also for fiber-reinforced rubber bearings. This paper presents analytical solutions to the compression problem of hollow-circular fiber-reinforced rubber bearings. The problem is handled using the most-recent formulation of the "pressure method". The analytical solutions are, then, used to investigate the effects of reinforcement flexibility and hole presence on bearing's compression modulus and maximum shear strain in the bearing in view of four key parameters: (i) reinforcement extensibility, (ii) hole size, (iii) bearing's shape factor and (iv) rubber compressibility. It is shown that the compression stiffness of a hollow-circular fiber-reinforced bearing may decrease considerably as reinforcement flexibility and/or hole size increases particularly if the shape factor of the bearing is high and rubber compressibility is not negligible. Numerical studies also show that the existence of even a very small hole can increase the maximum shear strain in the bearing significantly, which has to be considered in the design of such annular bearings.
This paper presents an optimization method to determine the shoulder height of an angular contact ball bearing by 3D contact analysis using nondimensional-shaped variables. The load analysis of the ball bearing is performed to calculate the internal load distributions and contact angles of each rolling element. From the results of bearing load analysis and the contact geometry between the ball and inner/outer raceway, 3D contact analyses using influence function are conducted. The nondimensional shoulder height and nondimensional load are defined to give the generalized results. The relationship between the shoulder height and radius of curvature of the shoulder under various loading conditions is investigated in order to propose a design method for the two design parameters. Using nondimensional parameters, the critical shoulder heights are optimized with loads, contact angles, and conformity ratios. We also develop contour maps of the critical shoulder height as functions of internal loads and contact angles for the different contact angles using nondimensional parameters. The results show that the dimensionless shoulder height increased as the contact angle and dimensionless load increased. Conversely, when the conformity ratio increased, the critical shoulder height decreased. Therefore, if the contact angle is reduced and the conformity ratio is increased within the allowable range, it will be an efficient design to reduce the shoulder height of ball bearings.
Plate Bearing Test(PBT) and California Bearing Ratio Test(CBR) usually have been used to evaluate the bearing capacity of sub-layer in pavement system. However, these tests have shortcomings for which man powers and time are spent greatly. Many researchers proposed a simple Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Test(DCP) to evaluate the bearing capacity of sub-layers in pavement system. This study performed several field bearing capacity tests(DCP, PBT, CBR, FWD) to evaluate field performance of DCP on sub-base and subgrade at four test sections simultaneously. The results showed that DCPI, $M_{FWD}$, and $PBT_K_{30}$ are highly correlated, but CBR and other test are not. This study proposed the following regression models between FWD, DCP, and PBT: $$M_{FWD}=993.10\Big(\frac{1}{DCPI}\Big)+33.95\;R^2=0.77$$$$M_{FWD}=3.7533K_{30}+23.085\;R^2=0.69$$
To better understand the influence of hollow ratio on the hollow concrete-filled circular steel tubular (H-CFT) stub columns under axial compression and to propose the design formula of ultimate bearing capacity for H-CFT stub columns, 3D finite element analysis and laboratory experiments were completed to obtain the load-deformation curves and the failure modes of H-CFT stub columns. The changes of the confinement effect between core concrete and steel tube with different hollow ratios were discussed based on the finite element results. The result shows that the axial stress of concrete and hoop stress of steel tube in H-CFT stub columns are decreased with the increase of hollow ratio. AfteGr the yield of steel, the reduction rate of longitudinal stress and the increase rate of circumferential stress for the steel tube slowed down. The confinement effect from steel tube on concrete also weakened slowly with the increase of hollow ratio. Based on the limit equilibrium method, a simplified formula of ultimate bearing capacity for the axially loaded H-CFT stub columns was proposed. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with the experimental and numerical results.

For the stable operation of high speed aerostatic spindle, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are not appropriate for very high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, the composite spindles with aerostatic bearing were designed and manufactured with carbon fiber/epoxy composite. The fundamental natural frequency of the composite spindle was evaluated through the modal testing.
This paper presents a combined numerical, experimental, and theoretical study on the behavior of the concrete-filled double circular steel tubular (CFDT) stub columns under axial compressive loading. Four groups of stub column specimens were tested in this study to find out the effects of the concrete strength, steel ratio and diameter ratio on the mechanical behavior of CFDT stub columns. Nonlinear finite element (FE) models were also established to study the stresses of different components in the CFDT stub columns. The change of axial and transverse stresses in the internal and external steel tubes, as well as the change of axial stress in the concrete sandwich and concrete core, respectively, was thoroughly investigated for different CFDT stub columns with the same steel ratio. The influence of inner-to-outer diameter ratio and steel ratio on the ultimate bearing capacity of CFDT stub columns was identified, and a reasonable section configuration with proper inner-to-outer diameter ratio and steel ratio was proposed. Furthermore, a practical formula for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity was proposed based on the ultimate equilibrium principle. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with both experimental and numerical results, indicating that the proposed formula is applicable for design purposes.

In this paper measurement method of uranium isotope ratio of uranium-bearing particles in swipe samples was introduced; Swipe sample screening program was proposed on the basis of studying various destructive assay and non-destructive assays. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence(XRF) system was applied to locate the deposited uranium-containing particles on the graphite support, particle's composition and size can be identified. Some isotope ratio results were compared with those of other bulk analytical methods; By measuring the same prepared sample, we got the U-particle isotopic ratio data similar to those from IAEA NWAL, indicating that our operation parameters and experimental conditions are viable and can be used for measurement of U-particle isotopic ratio from swipe samples.
The main goal of this paper is to establish an interference tolerance for determining optimal amount of clearance in the shaft-bearing system supported by radial ball bearings. The 2-D frictional contact model was employed for the FE analysis between the shaft and the inner raceway. Several examples were simulated using different material properties for the solid shaft. Efforts were focused on the deformation applied in the radial direction to select suitable bearings. The analysis results showed that the initial axial preload applied on the bearings plays a significant role to reduce bearing fatigue life. The proposed design parameters obtained by numerical simulations can approximately predict a rate of bearing life reduction as a function of shaft diameter ratio. This analysis can also be used to calculate the optimal initial radial clearance in order to obtain a shaft-bearing system design for high accuracy and long life.
Feasibility study of gas-lubricated bearing in micro gas turbine was performed. Based on Reynolds equation, finite difference method with coupled boundary was developed to analyze bearing characteristics, such as load capacity, mass flow rates and stiffness. By the bearing force and mass flow rates analysis with the variation of supply pressure, bearing clearance and capillary radius, acceptable range of design parameters were suggested in terms of load capacity and stiffness of bearings. Additionally, coupled boundary effect on pressure distribution was investigated and it is stated that coupling could reduce an excitation force due to narrow pressure distribution.

This paper describes the optimum design for journal bearing by using simulated annealing method. Simulated annealing algorithm is an optimum design method to calculate global and local optimum solution. Dynamic characteristics of a journal bearing are calculated by using finite difference method (FDM), and these values are used for the procedure of journal bearing optimization. The objective is to minimize the resonance response (Q factor) of the simple rotor system. Bearing clearance and length to diameter ratio are used as the design variables.
