  • As functional requirement of massive digital information storage devices are on a trend for the higher data transfer rate and lower cost, many different technical efforts are being tested and implemented in the industry. FDB(fluid dynamic bearing) is one of the major breakthroughs in rotor design in terms of TMR(track misregistration) budget. Although FDB analysis based on Reynolds' equation is well established and popularly being used for FDB design especially for the estimation of bearing stiffness, there are obvious limitations in the approach due to the inherent assumptions. A generalized analysis tool employing the full Navier-Stokes equation and the energy balance is to be beneficial for detailed FDB design. In this publication, an efficient geometry modeling method is presented that provides fully integrated inputs for general FVM/FDM(finite volume method/ finite difference method) codes. By virtue of the flexibility of the presented method, many different detailed FDB design and analysis are carried over with ease.

  • As the demand for higher areal recording densities requires a lower flying height of the slider, the variation of the flying height of the slider during drive operation becomes of great concern. The variation of the flying height is closely related with the slider design parameters such as air bearing shape, cavity depth, shallow step depth, crown, camber, pitch offset, roll offset, gram load, and so on. The objective of this work is to optimize the cavity depth and the shallow step depth, which are the control factors in air bearing design, using Robust Design method. It was found that the shallow step depth was statistically significant in affecting the variation of flying height, therefore the level of the shallow step depth should be chosen to minimize the variation of flying height.

  • This paper describes the process design for hot forging of bearing hub. Forging processes of bearing hub are simulated using the rigid-plastic finite element method. In the process called closed die forging without flash, the design of blocker geometry is of critical importance. Forging processes designs are take advantage of computer aided Process planning and experts. But that is difficult to predict metal flow line. So the preform is designed by the expert, and modified through predict metal flow line by CAE. This paper is to approach preform design considered defect such as metal flow and unfitting etc. at the finisher process.

  • The estimation of pile bearing capacity is important since the design details are determined from the result. There are numerous ways of determining the pile design load, but only few of them are chosen in the actual design. According to the recent investigation in Korea, the formulas proposed by Meyerhof based on the SPT N values are most frequently chosen in the design stage. In the study, various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the allowable bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the perdicted values with the static and dynamic load test measurements. Also in cases, these methods of pile bearing capacity determination do not take the time effect consideration, the actual allowable load as determined from pile load test indicates severe deviation from the design value. The principle results of this study are summarized as follows : A a result of estimate the reliability in criterion of the Davisson method, in was showed that Terzaghi & Peck > Chin > Meyerhof > Modified Meyerhof method was the most reliable method for the prediction of bearing capacity. Comparisons of the various pile-driving formulas showed that Modified Engineering News was the most reliable method. However, a significant error happened between dynamic bearing capacity equation was judged that uncertainty of hammer efficiency, characteristics of variable , time effect etc... was not considered. As a result of considering time effect increased skin friction capacity higher than end bearing capacity. It was found out that it would be possible to increase the skin friction capacity 1.99 times higher than a driving. As a result of considering 7 day's time effect, it was obtained that Engineering News. Modified Engineering News. • Currently, wind power has become a major research field in the area of sustainable development. As one important component of a wind turbine transmission system, most instances of downtime due to a gearbox failure are caused by bearing failures. Gearboxes for wind turbines must have the highest levels of reliability over a period of approximately 20 years, withstanding high dynamic loads. At the same time, a lightweight design and cost minimization efforts are required. These demands can only be met with a well-thought-out design, high-quality materials, a high production quality and proper maintenance. In order to design a reliable and lightweight gearbox, it is necessary to analyze methods pertaining to the bearing rating lifetimes of the standard and of different companies, also including calculation methods for modification factors. This can determine the influence of the bearing lifetime.

  • Bearing stress near anchor plates is usually very high due to prestressing force in anchorage zone of concrete structure used post-tensioned prestressed method. In order to effective utilization of cross section and crack control, appropriate size of anchorage plates should be used to prevent crack initiation and failure of concrete structures eventually. This study aims to suggest equation for effective area of bearing plate of rectangle type and circular type by Highway Bridge Design Specification and PTI etc. A shape factor according to bearing plate shape is suggested based on numerical analysis, and it can be used suitability for design of special anchorage plate dimension.

  • This paper presents a new water-lubricated hybrid sliding bearing for a high speed and high accuracy main shaft system, along with the numerical method used for its design. The porous material for the restrictor and the restriction parameter were chosen based on the special requirements of the water-lubricated bearing. Subsequent numerical calculations give the load capacity, stiffness, and friction power of different forms of water-lubricated bearings. The pressure distribution of the water film in a 6-cavity bearing is shown, based on the results of the numerical calculations. A comparison of oil-lubricated and water-lubricated bearings shows that the latter benefits more from improved processing precision and efficiency. An analysis of the stiffness and friction power results shows that 6-cavity bearings are the preferred type, due their greater stiffness and lower friction power. The average elevated temperature was calculated and found to be satisfactory. The relevant parameters of the porous restrictor were determined by calculating the restriction rate. All these results indicate that this design for a water-lubricated bearing meets specifications for high speed and high accuracy.

  • This study presents experimental measurements of the rotordynamic performance of a motor-driven small turbocompressor supported by gas beam foil journal bearings (GBFJBs) and compares the test results with the predictions of a computational model. The experiments confirmed that the rotational synchronous frequency component dominates the behavior of the overall rotor vibrations, whereas the nonsynchronous components are insignificant, indicating the rotor-bearing system remains stable up to 100 krpm. The undamped natural frequency and imbalanced response of the rotor-bearing system are predicted when integrating the finite element model of the rotor-bearing system with the predictions of the bearing dynamic coefficients. The results are in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, base excitation test results show that the small turbocompressor can endure large external forces and demonstrate limited rotor amplitudes. A simple single degreeof-freedom rotor model using the nonlinear stiffness of the GBFJBs can effectively predict the test results.

  • This paper presents an optimum design of journal bearings using a hybrid method to find the solutions of optimization problem. The present hybrid algorithm, namely Enhanced Artificial Life Algorithm(EALA), is a synthesis of an artificial life algorithm(ALA) and the random tabu search(R-tabu) method. EALA is applied to the optimum design of journal bearings supporting simple rotor. The applicability of EALA to optimum design of rotor-bearing system is exemplified through this study.
