  • In order to detect underwater acoustic signals, various SONAR array types have been developed, including towed line array SONAR system (TASS). However, the TASS suffers from performance degradation which is caused by aperture deformation during a turn, because the TASS have a long-aperture array. A parabolic array model for turning TASS have been developed to solve the degradation problem occurred during a turn. In this paper, adaptive beamforming system is developed using the parabolic TASS model to cancel interference signals. The developed beamforming system is based on generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) structure and self-tuning adaptive algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose one-bit feedback-based distributed beamforming (DBF) techniques for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in interference channels where the information transfer and power transfer networks coexist in the same frequency spectrum band. In a power transfer network, multiple distributed energy transmission nodes transmit their energy signals to a single energy receiving node capable of harvesting wireless radio frequency energy. Here, by considering the Internet-of-Things sensor network, the energy harvesting/information decoding receivers (ERx/IRx) can report their status (which may include the received signal strength, interference, and channel state information) through one-bit feedback channels. To maximize the amount of energy transferred to the ERx and simultaneously minimize the interference to the IRx, we developed a DBF technique based on one-bit feedback from the ERx/IRx without sharing the information among distributed transmit nodes. Finally, the proposed DBF algorithm in the interference channel is verified through the simulations and also implemented in real time by using GNU radio and universal software radio peripheral.

  • AT-DMB system has been developed to increase data rate up to double of conventional T-DMB in the same bandwidth while maintaining backward compatibility. The AT-DMB system adopted hierarchical modulation which adds BPSK or QPSK signal as enhancement layer to existing DQPSK signal. The enhancement layer signal should be small enough to maintain backward compatibility and to minimize the coverage loss of conventional T-DMB service coverage. But this causes the enhancement layer signal of AT-DMB susceptible to fading effect in transmission channel. A turbo code which has improved error correction capability than convolutional code, is applied to the enhancement layer signal of the AT-DMB system for compensating channel distortion. However there is a need for other solutions for better reception of AT-DMB signal in receiver side without increasing transmitting power. In this paper, we propose adaptive array antenna system with Eigen-space beamforming algorithm which benefits beamforming gain along with diversity gain. We analyzed the reception performances of AT-DMB system in indoor and mobile environments when this new smart antenna system and algorithm is introduced. The computer simulation results are presented along with analysis comments.

  • The DOA(direction of arrival), which is based on parametric and nonparametric estimation algorithm, and adaptive beamforming algorithm for mobile communication environments are researched and analyzed. In parametric estimation algorithm, eigenvalues of the signal component and the noise component are obtained from correlation matrix of received signal by array antenna and power spectrum of the received signal is discriminated from them. Otherwise, in nonparametric estimation algorithm, we minimize a regularized objective function for finding a estimate of the signal energy as a function of angle, using nonquadratic norm which leads to supper resolution and noise suppression. And then, DOA is estimated by the signal and noise spatial steering vector, and adaptive beam-forming pattern is improved by weight vectors obtained from the spatial vector. Therefore, the improved directional estimation algorithm with regularizing sparsity constraints offers super-resolution and noise suppression compared to other algorithms.

  • Several experimental techniques for identifying the noise sources distributed over a moving vehicle have been developed recently and are used to design a low noise vehicle. The beamforming method, which uses phase information between several microphones to localize the source position, is proved to be one of the promising techniques applicable even under complicated test environments. In this study a beamforming algorithm is developed and applied to measure the dominant noise sources on a passenger car passing by. Unlike the acoustic signals from a stationary noise source, the sound generated from a moving source is distorted due to the Doppler effects. The information about the speed and relative position of the vehicle are used to eliminate the Doppler effects from the measured acoustic signal by using a de-Dopplerization algorithm. The noise generated from a moving vehicle can be grouped in many ways, however, tire noise and the noise generated from the engine are distinguishable at the speeds being tested.

  • With the development of active phased array radar technology in recent years, active phased array antennas, which digitally combine signals received from subarray units using dozens of digital receiver, have been developed. The beam characteristics are greatly affected by the shape of the subarray structure as well as the weight of subarray in digital beamforming. So in this paper, the method to generate subarray structures by using recursive element exchanging method and the method to optimize subarray structures that can minimize sidelobes of operating beams are proposed. Additionally it presents the result to find the optimized subarray structure to minimize the maximum sidelobe of monopulse beam and pencil multi-beam respectively or simultaneously which are commonly used for digital beamforming by applying the algorithm propsed in this paper.

  • In this paper, we investigate the degrees of freedom (DOF) of the Y channel consisting of three single-antenna users and a two-antenna common access relay, where each user intends to exchange independent messages with the other two users with the assistance of the relay. We show that the DOF of this particular scenario is 1.5. In order to prove this result, we firstly derive a DOF upper bound based on cut-set bound by allowing cooperation among users, which shows that the total DOF is upper bounded by 1.5. Then we propose a novel transmission scheme based on asymmetric signal space alignment (ASSA) to demonstrate the achievability of the upper bound. Theoretical evaluation and numerical results confirm that the upper bound can be achieved by utilizing ASSA, which also proves the optimality of the ASSA-based scheme in terms of DOF. Combining the upper bound and achievability, we conclude that the exact DOF is 1.5. Moreover, we present a novel iterative joint beamforming optimization (I-JBO) algorithm to further improve the sum rate. Numerical simulations have been provided to demonstrate the convergence speed and performance advantage of the I-JBO algorithm.

  • In this paper, Inter user interference elimination algorithm based on Block Diagonal Geometric Mean Decomposition(BD-GMD) for eliminating inter user interference apply to Zero-Forcing in the Successive Signal to Leakage plus Noise Ratio(SSLNR) in Coordinated Multi-Point Coordinated Beamforming system(CoMP CB). As a result, the leakage power is eliminated. The inter user interference elimination algorithm, however, cannot guarantee the enough desired signal power therefore we perform the channel ordering to overcome this disadvantage and increase the desired signal power. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides the improved Bit Error Rate(BER) performance compared with existing SSLNR-Zero-Forcing-Tomlinson Harashima precoding(SSLNR-ZF-THP).

  • When an array receives a signal with a frequency higher than the design frequency, there is an ambiguity in beamforming due to spatial aliasing. In order to overcome this problem, Abadi proposed frequency-difference beamforming. However, there is a constraint that the minimum frequency bandwidth is required according to the value of the difference frequency. In this paper, we propose a method to find the direction of the target signal with spatial aliasing based on the frequency-wavenumber spectrum combined with Radon transform. The proposed method can estimate the direction of the target without ambiguities when the signal has nonnegligible bandwidth. We tested the algorithm by simulating a broadband signal and verified the results with the frequency-difference beamforming method using SAVEX15 (Shallow Water Acoustic Variability EXperiment 2015)'s shrimp noise data.
