Despite enormous performance gain with multi-antenna transmission in the single cell environment, its gain diminishes out in the multi-cell environment due to interference. It is also very hard to solve the efficient downlink beamforming with low complexity in multi-cell environment. First, this paper shows that the asymptotically sum rate optimal downlink beamformings at low and high SNR are maximum ratio transmit (MRT) and zero forcing (ZF) beamforming in the multi-cell system, respectively. Secondly, exploiting the asymptotically optimal downlink beamforming, we develop simple two types of near optimal downlink beamforming schemes having the form of minimum mean squared error (MMSE) beamforming obtained from the dual uplink problem. For each type, three different subclasses are also considered depending on the computational complexity. The simulation results show that the proposed near optimum algorithms provide the trade-off between the complexity and the performance.

In this paper, the extension method of data transmission range as adapting AAS(Adaptive Antenna Systems) in ECMA(European Computer Manufacturers Association) standard MB-OFDM(MultiBand-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) UWB systems is proposed, and the complementary beamforming method which can solve hidden beam problem when we adapt AAS in CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) systems is proposed. To design the complementary beamforming, Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization is utilized, whose beam pattern exhibits perfect nulling at the main beam angles and provides uniform power for detection of channel utilization out of main beam. The proposed method can be utilized with any arbitrary beamforming when we make main beamforming. Through computer simulation, it can be shown that proposed AAS and complementary beamforming increase data transmission range from 2m to 3.95m in 480Mbps data transmission system and increase throughput about 20% as compared with general UWB AAS systems.

Millimeter wave (mm-wave) communication systems provide high data rates owing to the large bandwidths available at mm-wave frequencies. Recently, analogue and digital combined beamforming, namely "hybrid beamforming" has drawn attentions owing to its ability to realize the required link margins in mm-wave systems. Taking into account the radio frequency (RF) hardware limitations, such as the analogue phase shifter gain constraint and the low resolution of the phase controller, we introduce an uplink hybrid beamforming system that includes discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based "fixed" analogue beamforming. We adopt a zero-forcing (ZF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equalizer to eliminate the uplink inter-user interferences. Moreover, to improve the sum-rate performances, we propose a transmit beam selection algorithm which makes the uplink effective channels, i.e., the beamformed channels, become near orthogonal. The effectiveness of the proposed beam selection algorithm was verified through numerical simulations.
The use of beamforming is effective for users in limited power environments. However, when it is applied to the downlink of a cellular system with universal frequency reuse, users near the sector boundary may experience significant interference from more than one sector. The use of a minimum mean square error (MMSE)-type receiver may not sufficiently cancel out the interference unless a sufficient number of receive antennas are used. In this paper, we consider the use of inter-sector beamforming that cooperates with a neighboring sector in the same cell to mitigate this interference problem in time-division duplex (TDD) environments. The proposed scheme can avoid interference from an adjacent sector in the same cell, while enhancing the transmit array gain by using the TDD reciprocity. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio (SINR) and the output capacity when applied to an MMSE-type receiver. The beamforming mode can be analytically switched between the inter-sector and the single-sector mode based on the long-term channel information. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by computer simulation.
Beamforming techniques have been successfully utilized for traffic channels in order to solve the interference problem. However, their use for control channels has not been sufficiently investigated. In this paper, a (semi-) centralized beamforming strategy that adaptively changes beam patterns and controls the total transmit power of cells is proposed for the performance enhancement of the common channel in hierarchical cell structure (HCS) networks. In addition, some examples of its practical implementation with low complexity are presented for two-tier HCS networks consisting of macro and pico cells. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated through multi-cell system-level simulations under optimistic and pessimistic interference scenarios. The cumulative distribution function of user geometry or channel quality has been used as a performance metric since in the case of common control channel the number of outage users is more important than the sum rate. Simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme provides a significant gain compared to the random beamforming scheme as well as conventional systems that do not use the proposed algorithm. Finally, the proposed scheme can be applied simultaneously to several adjacent macro and pico cells even if it is designed primarily for the pico cell within macro cells.
In this paper, aerodynamic noise characteristics of high-speed trains were deduced from the beamforming method. First, pass-by noise of high-speed trains was measured by a microphone array system. This measurement suggested that the majority of the aerodynamic noise produced came from the bogie area, the pantograph and its cover, and inter-coach gaps. Then, beampower outputs of a position in high-speed trains were obtained from the beamforming method. By Fourier transform, sound characteristics of the position in the frequency domain were deduced from the beamforming power spectrum. From this study, aerodynamic noise characteristics from the major sources of high-speed trains were drawn.

This paper considers the jointly active and passive beamforming design in the IRS-aided MISO downlink vehicle communication system where both V2I and V2V communication paradigms coexist. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem aiming to minimize the total transmit power of the base station subject to SINR requirements of both V2I and V2V users, total transmit power of base station and IRS's phase shift constraints. To deal with this non-convex problem, we propose a method which can alternately optimize the active beamforming at the base station and the passive beamforming at the IRS. By using first-order Taylor expansion, matrix analysis theory and penalized convex-concave process method, the non-convex optimization problem with coupled variables is converted into two decoupled convex sub-problems. The simulation results show that the proposed alternate optimization algorithm can significantly decrease the total transmit power of the vehicle base station.

A novel hybrid antenna array system for the code division multiple access (CDMA) using the diversity and beamforming technique has been proposed which is called as a dynamic selection method (DSM). Through the derived outage probability analysis, we have shown that the proposed DSM technique can give benefit over the conventional diversity-only or beamforming-only system.

Coordinated multi-point transmission is a candidate technique for next-generation cellular communications systems. We consider a system with multiple cells in which base stations coordinate with each other by sharing user channel state information, which mitigates inter-cell interference (ICI), especially for users located at the cell edge. We introduce a new user scheduling method that considers both ICI and intra-cell orthogonality. Due to the influence of ICI cancellation and the loss reduction of effective channel gain during the beamforming process, the proposed method improves the system sum rate, when compared to the conventional method, by an average of 0.55bps/Hz for different numbers of total users per cell.

Coordinated multi-point transmission (CoMP) is a candidate technique for next generation cellular communications systems. One of the primary elements discussed in LTE-Advanced technology is CoMP, which can improve cell edge user data rate as well as spectral efficiency due to multiple input multiple output - orthogonal frequency division multiplex (MIMO-OFDM). We consider a system with multiple cells in which base stations coordinate with each other by sharing user channel state information (CSI), which mitigates inter cell interference (ICI), especially for users located at the cell edge. We introduce a new user scheduling method of ICI cancellation and the loss reduction of effective channel gain during the beamforming process, the proposed method improves the system sum rate, when compared to the conventional method by an average of 0.55bps/Hz in different number of total users per cell. It also outperforms the conventional method by approximately 0.38bps/Hz using different SNRs.
