  • The objective of this study is to develop polymer-impregnated concrete(PIC), which is a newly developed composite material made by impregnating polymer impregnanls into hardened normal concrete, and to develop analytical techniques for its proper applications. Crystalline methyl methacrylate(MMA) is chosen as a monomer of polymer impregnants. The corrlpositions of polymer impregnants and producing processes are developed by analyzing the effects of penetration, polymerization, thermal safety, and strengthening characteristics. On t he basis of experimental results of this study, various strength characteristics and stress strain constitutive relations are formulated in terms of the compressive strength of normal concrete and the polymer loadings, which can be applied for analysis and design of PIC members. In order to provide a model for fracture analysis of flexural members, fracture toughness, fracture energy, critical crack width, and tension softening relations near crack tip are also formulated in terms of member depth, initial notch depth, and the flexural strength of normal concrete. The structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program developed in the study are applicable to evaluate elastic behavior, ultimate strength, and tension softening behavior of MMA type PIC structural members subject to various loading conditions. The accuracy and effectiveness of the developed computer program is examined by comparing the anal ytical results with the experimental results. Therefore, it is concluded that the developed structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program are applicable to analysis and design of in-situ and precast PIC structural members.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data used in greenhouse design, and for this purpose, the crop loads of tomato and paprika which have high crop load among crops cultivated in greenhouse were measured. The maximum differences in lowest and mean temperatures between cultivation year and normal years for winter season were -5.6 and $-4.9^{\circ}C$, respectively and those for summer season were 3.0 and $1.5^{\circ}C$, respectively. The calibration of push & pull gauge indicated approximate 0.99 of coefficient of determination, representing very high association. The planting densities of paprika and tomato were 3.43, 3.56 and $2.13plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively. The yields were 4.1, 4.3 and $16.2kg{\cdot}plant^{-1}$, corresponding to 14.1, 15.2 and $34.5kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$ of yield per unit area. The maximum loads were 1.3, 1.5 and $3.3kg{\cdot}plant^{-1}$, respectively. When the paprika were hanged on cross beam, the total crop load applied to it was estimated to be $15.3{\sim}15.9kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$, and when the weights of gutters supporting the cultivation beds, the total weights were $26.0{\sim}26.9kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$.

  • Many study have been performed to describe the elastic and inelastic behavior of H-shaped beams with web openings that generally concentrated on the monotonic loading condition and concentric web opening. The findings of the studies led Darwin to propose formulas for the design of beams with web openings considering local buckling. While the formulas are simple and useful in real situation, more studies arc needed on their cyclic loading condition. In this experimental study, 12 H-shaped beams with web openings under cyclic loading condition were investigated. The dimension criteria based on the formulas proposed by Darwin were examined. The suitability of existing design formulas and the effects of plastic hinges on beams with web openings and of local buckling around web openings on the beam strength under cyclic loading were also studied. This was done by observing their behavior with various dimensional openings, eccentric per cent, and stiffeners.

  • In general, the effects of steel ribs are not considered in the numerical analysis of tunnel design. However, attempts have been increased recently to consider these effects in the analysis of shallow tunnels in soft ground, based on the fact that the steel ribs embedded in the shotcrete take a role to support some portion of the redistributed load due to excavation. In such analyses, the steel ribs can be considered in four different methods: (1) a conventional method where the steel ribs are not considered, (2) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which the bending moment of shotcrete is not considered, (3) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which both the compressive stress and the bending moment for the shotcrete and steel rib are considered, and (4) a method using beam elements for the shotcrete and the steel rib, respectively. These methods are adopted in the numerical analysis using FLAC 2D to investigate stresses of both the shotcrete and the steel rib. The overall results show that the analyses are more practical and economical when the effects of steel rib are considered fer the methods (2), (3), and (4). Since the results of those analyses considering steel rib capacity may be different according to the ground condition, it will be necessary to consider the appropriate method among them in accordance with design conditions.

  • Due to the complex mechanism and various parameters that affect shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members, models on shear tend to be complex and difficult to utilize for design of structural members, and empirical relationships formulated with limited test data often work lot members having a specific range of influencing parameters on shear. As an alternative approach tot solving this problem, artificial neural networks have been suggested by some researchers. In this paper, artificial neural networks were used to predict shear strengths of RC beams without shear reinforcement. Especially, a large database that consists of shear test results of 398 RC members without shear reinforcement was used for artificial neural network analysis. Three well known approaches for shear strength of RC members, ACI 318-02 shear provision, Zsutiy's equation, and Okamura's relationship, are also evaluated with test results in the shear database and compared with neural network approach. While ACI 318-02 provided inaccurate predictions for RC members without shear reinforcement, the empirical equations by Zsutty and Okamura provided more improved prediction of Shear strength than ACI 318-02. The artificial neural networks, however provided the best prediction of shear strengths of RC beams without shear reinforcement that was closest to test results.

  • In this study, an unbraced five-story steel-framed structure was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to understand the features of structural behavior for the arrangement of semi-rigid connections. A pushover analysis of the structural models was performed, wherein all the connections were idealized as fully rigid and semi-rigid. Additionally, horizontal and vertical arrangements of the semi-rigid connection were adopted for the models. A fiber model was utilized for the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, and a three-parameter power model was adopted for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection. The top displacement, base-shear force, required ductility for the connection, sequence of the plastic hinge, and design factors such as the overstrength factor, ductility factor, and response modification coefficient were investigated using the pushover analysis of a 2D structure subjected to the equivalent static lateral force of KBC2005. The partial arrangement of the semi-rigid connection was found to have secured higher strength and lateral stiffness than that of the A-Semi frame, and greater ductility than the A-Rigid frame. The TSD connection was found suitable for use for economy and safety in the sample structure.

  • In this study, we fabricated a metamorphic high-electron-mobility transistor (mHEMT) device with a T-type gate structure for the implementation of W-band monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) and investigated its characteristics. To fabricate the mHEMT device, a recess process for etching of its Schottky layer was applied before gate metal deposition, and an e-beam lithography using a triple photoresist film for the T-gate structure was employed. We measured DC and RF characteristics of the fabricated device to verify the characteristics that can be used in W-band MMIC design. The mHEMT device exhibited DC characteristics such as a drain current density of 747 mA/mm, maximum transconductance of 1.354 S/mm, and pinch-off voltage of -0.42 V. Concerning the frequency characteristics, the device showed a cutoff frequency of 215 GHz and maximum oscillation frequency of 260 GHz, which provide sufficient performance for W-band MMIC design and fabrication. In addition, active and passive modeling was performed and its accuracy was evaluated by comparing the measured results. The developed mHEMT and device models could be used for the fabrication of W-band MMICs.

  • The display technology on the retina is the key role in inspecting the condition of the patients. 2-dimensional retina image is widely used in the eye examination as of today. Recently, 3-dimensional retina image ones have been introduced to this area, but the quality of the image is not fully satisfied to the operator. For the purpose of developing 3-D retina imaging instrument, the optimization of a 3-D retina imaging system using Code-V tool was investigated in this thesis. He-Ne laser having the wavelength 632.8 nm was used to make a power source to detect the retina. Several lenses and mirrors installed on sledge which were developed to perform focus control on 3-D device were designed to make a beam focusing and direct line. Polygon scanner having 24 mirror facets and galvanometer making tilting movement were utilized to make a 2-D laser plane. Also, design of eye ball had been fulfilled to see the focus of the 2-D plane. Reflected ray from retina detected on the sensor array with the same path. All cognitive components were optimized for aberration correction in order to focus on retina. Results of optimization were compared to those of initial designed optics system. On the basis of above results, the result of third aberration has been corrected to stable values to the optical system. MTF evaluating the resolution of an image has been closely correlated to the diffraction limit and PSF indicating the strength distribution of an image has shown the SR value as 0.9998 having high performance. The possibility of new and powerful 3-D retina image instrument was verified by simulating each component of the instrument by Code-V.

  • The development of joint FE models for deep learning neural network (DLNN)-based hybrid FEA is presented. Material models of bolts and bearings in the front axle of tractor, showing complex behavior induced by various tightening conditions, were replaced with DLNN models. Bolts are modeled as one-dimensional Timoshenko beam elements with six degrees of freedom, and bearings as three-dimensional solid elements. Stress-strain data were extracted from all elements after finite element analysis subjected to various load conditions, and DLNN for bolts and bearing were trained with Tensorflow. The DLNN-based joint models were implemented in the ABAQUS user subroutines where stresses from the next increment are updated and the algorithmic tangent stiffness matrix is calculated. Generalization of the trained DLNN in the FE model was verified by subjecting it to a new loading condition. Finally, the DLNN-based FEA for the front axle of the tractor was conducted and the feasibility was verified by comparing with results of a static structural experiment of the actual tractor.

  • The perimeter structure in high-rise buildings, which plays a major role in resisting lateral forces, is generally formed by the orthogonal placement of the beam and column, but currently various grid patterns are implemented. In a previous study, the adaptability of the $IsoTruss^{(R)}$ grid (ITG) as a perimeter structure was examined. In this study, a method of estimating the required cross sectional area of a member in a preliminary design is proposed. The members of the perimeter structure are placed in three planes, perpendicular (PPR), parallel (PPL) and oblique (POQ) to the lateral loading, and the stiffness of the members in the POQ was taken into account by projecting them onto the PPL or PPR. Three models are established for member size zoning through the height of the building, in order to investigate the effect of the shear and moment in the calculation of the required cross sectional area. To examine the effectiveness of this study, a 64-story building is designed and analyzed. The effect of the member size zoning was examined by comparing the maximum lateral displacement, required steel amount, and axial strength ratio of the columns. Judging from the maximum lateral displacement, which was 97.3% of the allowable limit, the proposed formula seems to be implemental in sizing the members of an ITG structure at the initial stage of member selection.
