This research explores a new finite element model for the free vibration analysis of bi-directional functionally graded (BDFG) beams. The model is based on an efficient higher-order shear deformation beam theory that incorporates a trigonometric warping function for both transverse shear deformation and stress to guarantee traction-free boundary conditions without the necessity of shear correction factors. The proposed two-node beam element has three degrees of freedom per node, and the inter-element continuity is retained using both C1 and C0 continuities for kinematics variables. In addition, the mechanical properties of the (BDFG) beam vary gradually and smoothly in both the in-plane and out-of-plane beam's directions according to an exponential power-law distribution. The highly elevated performance of the developed model is shown by comparing it to conceptual frameworks and solution procedures. Detailed numerical investigations are also conducted to examine the impact of boundary conditions, the bi-directional gradient indices, and the slenderness ratio on the free vibration response of BDFG beams. The suggested finite element beam model is an excellent potential tool for the design and the mechanical behavior estimation of BDFG structures.

The buckling analysis of the embedded sinusoidal piezoelectric beam is evaluated using numerical method. The smart beam is subjected to external voltage in the thickness direction. Elastic medium is simulated with two parameters of spring and shear. The structure is modelled by sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) and utilizing energy method, the final governing equations are derived on the basis of piezo-elasticity theory. In order to obtaining the buckling load, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. The obtained results are validated with other published works. The effects of beam length and thickness, elastic medium, boundary condition and external voltage are shown on the buckling load of the structure. Numerical results show that with enhancing the beam length, the buckling load is decreased. In addition, applying negative voltage, improves the buckling load of the smart beam.
The composite reinforced concrete and steel (RCS) structural systems have larger structural lateral stiffness, higher inherent structural damping, and faster construction speed than either traditional reinforcement concrete or steel structures. In this paper, four RCS subassemblies with or without the RC slab designed following a strong column-weak beam philosophy were constructed and tested under reversed-cyclic loading. Parameters including the width of slab and composite effect of the RC slab and beam were explored. The test results showed that all specimens performed in a ductile manner with plastic hinges formed in the beam ends near the column faces. The seismic responses of composite connections are influenced significantly by different width of slabs. Compared with that of the steel beam without the RC slab, it was found that the load carrying capacity of composite connections with the RC slab increased by 30% on average, and strength degradation, energy dissipation also had better performance, while the ductility of that were almost the same. Furthermore, the contribution of connection deformation to the overall specimen displacement was analyzed and compared. It decreased approximately 10% due to the coupling effect in the columns and beams with the RC slab. Based on the test result, some suggestions are presented for the design of composite RCS joints.

Behavior of H-beam connections under cyclic loadings is investigated experimentally in this study. The purpose of this study is to study the effect of steel properties and coping shape on the hysteretic behavior of H-beam connections. Five beam-to-column connection specimens were fabricated and tested under cyclic loadings. The load-rotation curves of the beam connections were mainly obtained. Deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the connections are compared each other. The connections fabricated from SS400 showed good deformability and energy dissipation capacity, but those from SM490 showed brittle fracture at the connection. The coping shape at the connections showed a little difference in cyclic behavior.
The present paper researches post-buckling behaviors of geometrically imperfect concrete beam resting on elastic foundation reinforced with graphene oxide powders (GOPs) based on finite element method (FEM). Distribution of GOPs are considered as uniform and linearly graded through the thickness. Geometric imperfection is considered as first buckling mode shape of the beam, the GOP reinforced beam is rested in initial position. The material properties of GOP reinforced composite have been calculated via employment of Halpin-Tsai micromechanical scheme. The provided refined beam element verifies the shear deformation impacts needless of any shear correction coefficient. The post-buckling load-deflections relations have been calculated via solving the governing equations having cubic non-linearity implementing FEM. Obtained findings indicate the importance of GOP distributions, GOP weight fraction, matrix material, geometric imperfection, shear deformation and foundation parameters on nonlinear buckling behavior of GOP reinforced beam.
This paper analyzes nonlinear free vibration of the circular nano-tubes made of functionally graded materials in the framework of nonlocal strain gradient theory in conjunction with a refined higher order shear deformation beam model. The effective material properties of the tube related to the change of temperature are assumed to vary along the radius of tube based on the power law. The refined beam model is introduced which not only contains transverse shear deformation but also satisfies the stress boundary conditions where shear stress cancels each other out on the inner and outer surfaces. Moreover, it can degenerate the Euler beam model, the Timoshenko beam model and the Reddy beam model. By incorporating this model with Hamilton's principle, the nonlinear vibration equations are established. The equations, including a material length scale parameter as well as a nonlocal parameter, can describe the size-dependent in linear and nonlinear vibration of FGM nanotubes. Analytical solution is obtained by using a two-steps perturbation method. Several comparisons are performed to validate the present analysis. Eventually, the effects of various physical parameters on nonlinear and linear natural frequencies of FGM nanotubes are analyzed, such as inner radius, temperature, nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, scale parameter ratio, slenderness ratio, volume indexes, different beam models.

In this article, a mathematical model is developed to predict the dynamic behavior of bio-inspired composite beam with helicoidal orientation scheme under variable axial load using a unified higher order shear deformation beam theory. The geometrical kinematic relations of displacements are portrayed with higher parabolic shear deformation beam theory. Constitutive equation of composite beam is proposed based on plane stress problem. The variable axial load is distributed through the axial direction by constant, linear, and parabolic functions. The equations of motion and associated boundary conditions are derived in detail by Hamilton's principle. Using the differential quadrature method (DQM), the governing equations, which are integro-differential equations are discretized in spatial direction, then they are transformed into linear eigenvalue problems. The proposed model is verified with previous works available in literatures. Parametric analyses are developed to present the influence of axial load type, orthotropic ratio, slenderness ratio, lamination scheme, and boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of composite beam structures. The present enhanced model can be used especially in designing spacecrafts, naval, automotive, helicopter, the wind turbine, musical instruments, and civil structures subjected to the variable axial loads.

Recently, to shorten construction periods and reduce labor costs, the need for a corrugated beam form in the RC structure is being emphasized. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the deformation performance of SY Beam, a newly developed corrugated beam form work, during concrete casting. The standard cross-sectional shape of SY Beam was determined by modeling the deck structure of various thicknesses using the MIDAS GEN program. As a result, the cross-sectional dimensions of the SY Beam were determined to be 400mm and 450mm in width and height, respectively. A total of three SY Beam specimens were fabricated using steel plate thicknesses of 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2mm. The load conditions applied during casting concrete at the actual site are reflected. The vertical and horizontal displacements of the SY beam were measured during concrete casting. As a result, the vertical displacement showed a tendency to decrease as the thickness increased. Considering both vertical and horizontal displacement, the case with steel plate thickness of 1.2mm is the safest and most immediately applicable to the field. In the future, to secure manufacturability, constructability, and economics, the optimum steel plate thickness should be derived, and additional analysis and experimental studies for 1.05, 1.1, and 1.15mm are required.
When the material strength and ductility of shear studs is sufficient to carry the interface shear force, the composite beam can behave safely without premature structural failure in the interface and without ultimate moment reduction. In this study, the influence of the deformation capacity of shear studs embedded in high-strength concrete on structural behavior and design condition of composite beam is analyzed using FEM. In the analysis, load type, degree of shear connection and arrangement of studs are considered as analysis parameters. According to analysis results, in the case of partial interaction, the deformation capacity of studs embedded in high-strength concrete should be considered together with material strength. Especially in the case of uniform arrangement of studs and uniformly distributed load, a minimum available degree of shear connection is restricted by the deformation capacity of studs. In this case, shear studs should be arranged in consideration of the distribution of shear force at the composite section.
