  • The paper presents a simplified force-based seismic design procedure for the preliminary design of steel haunch retrofitting for the seismic upgrade of deficient RC frames. The procedure involved constructing a site-specific seismic design spectrum for the site, which is transformed into seismic base shear coefficient demand, using an applicable response modification factor, that defines base shear force for seismic analysis of the structure. Recent experimental campaign; involving shake table testing of ten (10), and quasi-static cyclic testing of two (02), 1:3 reduced scale RC frame models, carried out for the seismic performance assessment of both deficient and retrofitted structures has provided the basis to calculate retrofit-specific response modification factor Rretrofitted. The haunch retrofitting technique enhanced the structural stiffness, strength, and ductility, hence, increased the structural response modification factor, which is mainly dependent on the applied retrofit scheme. An additional retrofit effectiveness factor (ΩR) is proposed for the deficient structure's response modification factor Rdeficient, representing the retrofit effectiveness (ΩR=Rretrofitted /Rdeficient), to calculate components' moment and shear demands for the retrofitted structure. The experimental campaign revealed that regardless of the deficient structures' characteristics, the ΩR factor remains fairly the unchanged, which is encouraging to generalize the design procedure. Haunch configuration is finalized that avoid brittle hinging of beam-column joints and ensure ductile beam yielding. Example case study for the seismic retrofit designs of RC frames are presented, which were validated through equivalent lateral load analysis using elastic model and response history analysis of finite-element based inelastic model, showing reasonable performance of the proposed design procedure. The proposed design has the advantage to provide a seismic zone-specific design solution, and also, to suggest if any additional measure is required to enhance the strength/deformability of beams and columns.

  • The RC beams subjected to bending and shear are an important substructure. After flexural cracking, the internal stress state in the beam could not be explained by the classical beam theory. In this study the internal force state factor is introduced to explain the stress state change in the RC beams. The internal force state factor of uniform load was expanded by superposition method using infernal force state factor of point load. As the load types change, the operator that would be calculated the internal force state factor was proposed.

  • Curved glued laminated timber (glulam) is rapidly coming into the domestic modern timber frame buildings and predominant in building construction. The radial stress is frequently occurred in curved beams and is a critical design parameter in curved glulam. Three models, Wilson equation, Exact solution and Approximation equation were introduced to determine the radial stress of curved glulam under pure bending condition. It is obvious that radial stress distribution between small radius and large radius was different due to slight change of neutral plane location to center line. If the beam design with extremely small radius, it should be considered to determine the exact location of maximum radial stress. The current standard KSF 3021 was reviewed and would be considered some adjustment determining the optimum radius in curved glulam. Current design principle is that the stress factor is given by the curvature term only in constant depth of the beam, but like tapered or small radius of beams, the stress factor by Wilson equation was underestimated. So current design formula should be considered to improvement for characterizing the radial stress factor under pure bending condition.

  • The effective length factor of a framed column may be determined by means of the alignment chart procedure. This method is based on many unrealistic assumptions, among which is that all columns have the same stiffness parameter, which is dependent on the length, axial load, and moment of inertia of the column. A new approximate method is developed for the determination of effective length factors for columns in unbraced frames. This method takes into account the effects of inelastic column behaviour, far end conditions of the restraining beams and columns, semi-rigid beam-to-column connections, and differentiated stiffness parameters of columns. This method may be implemented on a microcomputer. A numerical study was carried out to demonstrate the extent to which the involved parameters affect the K factor. The beam-to-column connection stiffness, the stiffness parameter of columns, and the far end conditions of restraining members have a significant effect on the K factor of the column under investigation. The developed method is recommended for design purposes.

  • In this paper, free vibration of a sandwich curved beam with a functionally graded (FG) core was investigated. Closed-form formulations of two-dimensional (2D) refined higher order beam theory (RHOBT) without neglecting the amount of z/R was derived and used. The present RHOBT analysis incorporated a trapezoidal shape factor that arose due to the fact that stresses through the beam thickness were integrated over a curved surface. The solutions presented herein were compared with the available numerical and analytical solutions in the related literature and excellent agreement was obtained. Effects of some dimensionless parameters on the structural response were investigated to show their effects on fundamental natural frequency of the curved beam. In all the cases, variations of the material constant number were calculated and presented. Effect of changing ratio of core to beam thickness on the fundamental natural frequency depended on the amount of the material constant number.

  • Two-noded curved beam elements, CMLC (field-consistent membrane and linear curvature) and IMLC(field-inconsistent membrane and linear curvature) are developed on the basis of Timoshenko's beam theory and curvilinear coordinate. The curved beam element is developed by the separation of the radial deflection into the bending deflection. In the CMLC element, field-consistent axial strain interpolation is adapted for removing the membrane locking. The CMLC element shows the rapid and stable convergence on the wide range of curved beam radius to thickness. The field-consistent axial strain and the separation of radial deformation produces the most efficient linear element possible.

  • This research is concerned with the validation of the modeling technique and controller design for slewing beam structures. When cantilever beam rotates about axes perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates from the initial stage of slewing. In this paper, the analytical model for a single slewing flexible beam with surface bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator is developed using the Hamilton's principle with discretization by the assumed mode method. Comparisons with the theoretical model are made based upon the frequency responses and time responses. A new factor called the coupling coefficient is introduced to incorporate the discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental results. The slewing is achieved by applying the PID control, which is found to be less sensitive to vibrations. The vibrations are controlled by PPF controller, which is found to be effective in suppressing residual vibrations after slewing. The vibrations occurred during slewing is difficult to control because the piezoceramic actuator is not powerful enough to overcome inertial loadings.

  • Based on the reinterpretation of the well-known relationship between shear and the rate of change of bending moment in a reinforced concrete beam subject to combined shear and moment loads, the shortcomings of present truss models are discussed. The core of the theory is that a new perspective on the shear strength can be gained by viewing the internal stress filed in terms of the superposition of two base components of shear resistance; arch action and beam action. The arch action can be designed using the simple truss having curved compression chord, while the beam action between the two chords can be modeled using a parallel chord truss with MCFT or RA-STM. The compatibility of deformation associated to the two action is taken into account by employing a characteristic factor a. The new model was examined by the Stuttgart beam shear tests, and the results show that the present approach provides good estimates of stirrup contribution and concrete contributions.

  • In laser machining such as drilling with $CO_2$ or Nd:YAG laser, and etching or ablation with Excimer laser, one of the most important parameters affecting the machining is known to be beam characteristics. In this paper a numerical study is performed to investigate the effects of beam parameters, especially in the process of excimer laser ablation of polymers. Results of different beam conditions reveal that if the ablated depth is small compared to beam size the simple photochemical etching model is suitable to predict the etched shape, and that the importance of precise alignment becomes large as beam quality factor becomes larger.
