The Evaluation of Multiplane-Parallel Chamber Using Crystal Plate as Ionization Medium for Therapeutic Radiation Beams

  • There has been necessity of an air free ionization chamber using the gold-crystal-aluminium plates, henceforth called the crystal chamber. The crystal chamber formed of parallel plates is very small in size and has more response for absorbed dose of therapeutic radiation beams. The gold plate on the crystal facing the photon and electron beam acts as an intensifier of signals and crystal plate as an ionization medium respectively. Both the copper guard ring and the aluminum collecting electrode are connected to an electrometer. Using high energy photon (6, 15 MV) and electron (9, 12, 15, 18 MeV) beams, the responses of the crystal chamber are evaluated against a PTW Farmer-type chamber at a field size of 10${\times}$10cm$^2$ and 100 cm SSD. The responses of crystal chamber for therapeutic radiation electron and photon beams are greater in magnitude by several order than Farmer. The crystal chamber has good linearity without correction factor C$\_$t,p/ with respect to the signals, a reading reproduction with good accuracy and precision less than 0.5%, and has other useful functions in measuring radiation beams.

Buckling of restrained steel columns due to fire conditions

  • An analytical procedure is presented for the determination of the buckling load and the buckling temperature of a straight, slender, geometrically perfect, axially loaded, translationally and rotationally restrained steel column exposed to fire. The exact kinematical equations of the column are considered, but the shear strain is neglected. The linearized stability theory is employed in the buckling analysis. Behaviour of steel at the elevated temperature is assumed in accordance with the European standard EC 3. Theoretical findings are applied in the parametric analysis of restrained columns. It is found that the buckling length factor decreases with temperature and depends both on the material model and stiffnesses of rotational and translational restraints. This is in disagreement with the buckling length for intermediate storeys of braced frames proposed by EC 3, where it is assumed to be temperature independent. The present analysis indicates that this is a reasonable approximation only for rather stiff rotational springs.

Possible Risk Factors Associated with Radiation Proctitis or Radiation Cystitis in Patients with Cervical Carcinoma after Radiotherapy

  • Radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis are major complications for patients with cervical carcinoma following radiotherapy. In the present study, we aimed to determine the potential risk factors for the development of radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis after irradiation. A total of 1,518 patients with cervical carcinoma received external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) followed by high-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy (HDRICB) in our hospital. The incidences of radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis were recorded and associations with different factors (age, time period, tumor stage) were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$ (chi-squared) and Fisher exact tests. We found that 161 and 94 patients with cervical carcinoma were diagnosed with radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis, respectively, following radiotherapy. The prevalence of Grade I-II radiation proctitis or radiation cystitis was significantly lower than that of Grade III (radiation proctitis: 3.82% vs. 6.76%, P < 0.05; radiation cystitis: 2.31% vs. 3.87%, P < 0.05) and was significantly enhanced in patients with late stage (IIIb) tumor progression compared to those in early stage (Ib, IIa) (P < 0.05). Moreover, the incidence of radiation proctitis and cystitis was not correlated with age or, time period following radiation, for each patient (P > 0.05). These observations indicate that a late stage of tumor progression is a potential risk factor for the incidence of radiation proctitis and cystitis in cervical carcinoma patients receiving radiotherapy.

SURFACE DEFORMATION MONITORING USING TERRASAR-X INTERFEROMETRY

  • TerraSAR-X is new radar satellite operated at X-band, multi polarization, and multi beam mode. Compared with C-band or L-band SAR, the X-band system inherently suffers from more temporal decorrelation, but is more sensitive to surface deformation monitoring due to short wavelength (3.1 cm) and high spatial resolution (1m-3m). It is generally expected that sensitivity to estimate surface movement using TerraSAR-X will be increased by the factor of 10, compared to current C-band system with low spatial resolution such as ERS-2, Envisat. Many urban areas are experiencing land subsidence due to water, oil and natural gas withdrawal, underground excavation, sediment compaction, and so on. Monitoring of surface deformation is valuable for effectively limiting damage areas. In addition high accuracy and spatially dense subsidence map can be achieved by X-band InSAR observation, promoting identification and separation of various subsidence processes and leading to enhanced understanding via mechanical modeling. In this study we will introduce some initial InSAR results using new TerraSAR-X SAR data for surface deformation monitoring.

Concrete structures under combined mechanical and environmental actions: Modelling of durability and reliability

  • Service life assessments which do not include the synergy between mechanical and environmental loading are neglecting a factor that can have a significant impact on structural safety and durability assessment. The degradation of concrete structure is a result of the combined effect of environmental and mechanical factors. In order to make service life design realistic it is necessary to consider both of these factors acting simultaneously. This paper deals with the advanced modelling of concrete carbonation and chloride ingress into concrete using stochastic 1D and 2D models. Widely accepted models incorporated into the new fib Model Code 2010 are extended to include factors that reflect the coupled effects of mechanical and environmental loads on the durability and reliability of reinforced concrete structures. An example of cooling tower degradation by carbonation and an example of a bended reinforced concrete beam kept for several years in salt fog are numerically studied to show the capability of the stochastic approach. The modelled degradation measures are compared with experimental results, leading to good agreement.

  • 탄성표면파 소자용 압전재료의 특성을 평가하여 최적 절단명과 전파방형을 결정하였다. 압전단결정 $LiTaO_4$에 대하여 Rayleigh파의 속도, 결합계수, 표면유전상수, 주파수-온도계수, 감쇠계수, 퓨어모드 전하, 빔 산란, 그리고 정열오차 감도 등의 항목들을 평가하였다. 이론적 계산 결과 Y절단면상의 X축 방향이 최적치로 나타났고, 이결과는 시럼에 의해 확인되었다. 본 논문의 평가방법은 여타 다른 압전재료들에도 동일하게 적용이 가능하다.

Phase change properties of BN doped GeSbTe films

  • Boron Nitride (BN) doped GeSbTe films were grown by the ion beam sputtering deposition (IBSD). The in-situ sheet resistance data and the x-ray diffraction patterns showed the crystallization is suppressed due to the BN incorporation. The phase change speed in BN doped GeSbTe films were investigated using the static tester equipped with nanosecond pulsed laser. The phase change speed for BN doped GST films become faster than the corresponding values for an undoped GST film. The Johnson-Mehl-Avrami(JMA) plot and Avrami coefficient for laser crystallization showed that the change in growth mode during the laser crystallization is a most important factor for the phase change speed in the BN doped GST films. The JMA results and the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images indicate that the origin of the change in the crystalline growth mode is due to an increase in the number of initial nucleation sites which is produced by the incorporated BN. In addition, the retension properties for the laser writing/erasing are remarkably improved in BN doped GeSbTe films owing to the stability of the incorporated BN.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the properties change of electric wire when the thermal stress was applied to NFR-8 and FR-PVC 600[V] wire. Messurement is made of the attenuation of a light beam by smoke accumulating with in a closed chamber due to nonflaming pyrolytic decomposition and flaming combustion. Results are expressed in terms of specific optical density which is derived from a geometrical factor and the measured optical density a measurement characteristic of the concentration of smoke. Referenced documents were ASTM E662 standard test method for specific Ds genalated by solid materials. The furnace control system shall maintain the required irradiance level under steady-state condition with the chamber door closed of $2.5{\pm}0.04[w/cm^{2}]$ for 20 min. According to the results of the smoke density analysis of NFR-8 and FR-PVC the highest decomposition flaming smoke density range of NFR-8 and FR-PVC were 25.2 to 37.5 and 51.1 respectively. Nonflaming smoke density range of NFR-8 and FR-PVC were 100.4 to 112.2 and 126.5 to 398.8. The amount of carbon monoxide generated was found to be much higher in FR-PVC decomposition than in NFR-8 due to incomplete combustion of FR-PVC which has high content of carbon in compound.

  • 강골조의 보-기둥 접합부에 대한 해석과 설계는 일반적으로 완전한 강접이나 마찰이 없는 완전한 핀접합으로 가정하는 것이 보통이다. 이러한 경우, 구조해석 및 설계과정을 단순화시키는 장점은 있으나, 실제 철골 접합부에서는 작용하중에 대하여 어느 정도의 모멘트 전달과 회전구속력을 갖는 반강접으로 해석해야 하므로 실제와는 다소 차이가 날 수 있다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 고정계수에 의한 기둥-보 접합부의 반강접성과 P-delta효과를 고려한 골조의 비선형 해석 프로그램을 작성하고, 수치해석을 통해 평면 강골조의 변형과 내력에 미치는 접합강성의 영향을 검토하였으며, 상용의 해석프로그램인 MIdas Gen과 비교하였다.

이중층 Ti전극이 적용된 TCO-less 염료 감응형 태양전지에 관한 연구

  • 염료 감응형 태양전지는 상,하판 투명전극(TCO), 나노입자의 다공질 TiO2, 염료 고분자 층으로 구성된 광전극과 투명전극 및 백금(Pt) 박막으로 구성된 상대전극 그리고 두 전극 사이를 산화 환원용 전해질 용액으로 채우고 있는 구조이다. 이 구조에서 투명전극(TCO)은 재료비의 많은 부분을 차지하므로 제작비용 절감을 위한 TCO-less에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행 중이다. 본 연구에서는 TCO-less 염료 감응형 태양전지 제작을 위해 이중층 Ti 전극 구조를 제안하였다. 제작과정은 광조사 부분을 확보한 유리기판에 e-beam 증착법을 이용해 Ti 전극을 증착시킨 후 TiO2를 Ti전극과 일부 중첩하여 인쇄하고 그 위에 두 번째 Ti전극을 제작한다. 이중층 Ti전극 구조는 SEM, EIS 등의 분석장비를 사용하였고 기존 FTO 구조에 비해 단락전류밀도, 에너지 변환효율은 감소하였으나 직렬 내부저항이 약 27% 감소하여 fill factor가 28% 향상된 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.
