This paper presents the design and experiment results of a multi-layered microsystem for magnetic bead applications. The magneto-microfluidic device is designed for capable of separating magnetic beads. In the presence of the magnetic field, magnetic beads are attracted and moved to high gradient magnetic fields. A multi-layered microfluidic channel consists of top and bottom layers in order to separate magnetic beads in the vertical direction. Our channel is easily integrated magnetic cell sorter, especially on-chip microelectromagnet or permanent magnet device. Fast separation of magnetic beads in top and bottom channels can be used in high throughput screening to monitor the efficiency of blood and drug compounds.
We developed a microfluidic immunoassay platform for the detection of various analytes such as bacterial pathogen by packing antibody-immobilized glass beads in spatially-isolated microchambers on a microfluidic device. Primary amines of antibody were covalently conjugated to carboxyl-terminated glass beads previously treated with aminosilane followed by glutaraldehyde. Through this covalent binding, up to 905 $\mu$g immunoglobulin G (IgG) per gram of glass beads was immobilized. For application, glass beads attaching antibody specific to Escherichia coli O157:H7, a foodborne pathogen, were packed into a microfluidic device and used for the detection of the serotype. This prototype immunoassay device can be used for the simultaneous detection of multiple analytes by sequentially packing different-sized glass beads attaching different antibody in discrete microchambers on a single microfluidic device.

Gems are using in jewelry, accessory and culture goods etc. in the contemporary jewelry and beads jewelry are made of natural and synthetic are generalize and popularize regardless of age gaining popularity. But in spite of enlarging the scale of gems for beads market, design of them rely on foreign cutting skills. Therefore, in this thesis, we developed usable cutting gems for beads wedding, culture goods and local souvenir as well as beads jewelry. we make growing more and more interested in gem design and contribute activation of gems and jewelry industry proposing various design gems for beads.
The adsorption of uranium (VI) by calcium alginate beads was examined by batch experiments. The effects of environmental conditions on U (VI) adsorption were studied, including contact time, pH, initial concentration of U (VI), and temperature. The alginate beads were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that hydroxyl and alkoxy groups are present at the surface of the beads. The experimental results showed that the adsorption of U (VI) by alginate beads was strongly dependent on pH, the adsorption increased at pH 3~7, then decreased at pH 7~9. The adsorption reached equilibrium within 2 minutes. The adsorption kinetics of U (VI) onto alginate beads can be described by a pseudo first-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm can be described by the Redlich-Peterson model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 237.15 mg/g. The sorption process is spontaneous and has an exothermic reaction.

The objective of this study was to investigate microbial removal using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and iron (hydr)oxides (IHs) immobilized onto granular media. Column experiments were performed using calcium alginate beads (CA beads), LDHs entrapped in CA beads (LDH beads), quartz sand (QS), iron hydroxide-coated sand (IHCS) and hematite-coated sand (HCS). Microbial breakthrough curves were obtained by monitoring the effluent, with the percentage of microbial removal and collector efficiency then quantified from these curves. The results showed that the LDH beads were ineffective for the removal of the negatively-charged microbes (27.7% at 1 mM solution), even though the positively-charged LDHs were contained on the beads. The above could be related to the immobilization method, where LDH powders were immobilized inside CA beads with nano-sized pores (about 10 nm); therefore, micro-sized microbes (E. coli = 1.21 ${\mu}m$) could not diffuse through the pores to come into contact with the LDHs in the beads, but adhere only to the exterior surface of the beads via polymeric interaction. IHCS was the most effective in the microbial removal (86.0% at 1 mM solution), which could be attributed to the iron hydroxide coated onto the exterior surface of QS had a positive surface charge and, therefore, effectively attracted the negatively-charged microbes via electrostatic interactions. Meanwhile, HCS was far less effective (35.6% at 1 mM solution) than IHCS because the hematite coated onto the external surface of QS is a crystallized iron oxide with a negative surface charge. This study has helped to improve our knowledge on the potential application of functional granular media for microbial removal.
The yellow crystalline material present in yellow and green glass beads excavated from sites in the Baekje region of Korea was previously analyzed through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, revealing that the yellow crystalline material was $PbSnO_3$. This material is a pigment that is rarely seen in the Korean peninsula. Furthermore, some studies have been published on the provenance of lead in this material, which revealed no relationship to Korea, China, or Japan. In this study, we collected all accessible results of analyses on the lead isotope ratio of yellow and green glass beads excavated from the Korean peninsula, specifically from 7 sites in the Baekje region(located in the vicinity of Seoul, Wanju, Hwaseong, Osan, Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan) and 2 sites in the Silla region(located in the vicinity of Gyeongju and Changnyeong). We subsequently investigated the lead provenance of the opacifying agents in the glass beads through comparison with the current extent of the galena data accumulated for the East Asian region, including Korea, China, and Japan, and for Thailand(Kanchanaburi Province), Southeast Asia. Our analysis determined that the lead provenance of the glass beads excavated from the Korean peninsula was Thailand(Kanchanaburi Province). Beyond our results, further studies should seek to determine the production sites of the glass beads. Obtaining and comparing the scientific analyses of glass beads from India and Southeast Asia would enable research on the glass beads trade through the maritime silk road.
The purpose of the present investigation was to improve several procedures being used in the adherence assay of Streptococcus sanguis cells to hydroxyapatite (HA) beads and to study the effect of the beads on the counting of radioactivity. The standard adhere assay involved the adherence of radiolabeled bacteria to 40mg of HA beads. The beads were mixed with ['H]thymidine-labeled bacterial cells and incubated for 60 minutes at room temperature. Unadsorbed cells were removed, the beads with adsorbed cells were dried, and the radioactivity was monitered in a scintillation spectrometer. The 30 seconds sonication of cells in a form of long chains appeared to be adequate for obtaining mostly singlet or doublet cells. Unlike the counting of S. sanguis cell suspension, bacterial cells adhered to HA or saliva-coated HA(SHA) required smaller volume (2.5ml) of scintillaton fluid for better counting. Eighteen percent quenching of counts could be attributed to the beads. Among 3 procedures commonly used to equilibrate the beads for adherence assay, no differences were found in their effectiveness. The HA beads on which the bacteria remained attached in scintillant during the counting were found to be the source of sample self-absorption representing 34.5% of the total radioactivity counts resulting from the beads dissolved in HCl solution.

Retroreflection of vehicle headlights, as induced by spherical glass beads, is a key optical phenomenon that provides road-surface markings with greatly enhanced visibility, thus better securing a driver's safety in the nighttime as well as in unclear daytime. Retroreflectance of glass beads is a quite sensitive function of their refractive index, so that measurement of the refractive index of glass specifically in the shape of spherical beads needs to be performed within a reasonable uncertainty that is tolerable for road-marking applications. The Becke line method has been applied in assessing refractive index of such glass beads as e.g. an industrial standard in the Republic of Korea; however, the reference refractive-index liquids are not commercially available these days for refractive index greater than 1.80 due to the toxicity of the constituent materials. As such, high-refractive-index glass beads require an alternate method, and in this regard we propose a practically serviceable technique with uncertainty tantamount to that of the Becke line method: Based on comparison of calculated and measured retroreflectance values of commercial glass beads, we discover that their refractive index can be determined with reasonable precision via the retroreflectance measurement. Specifically, in this study the normalized retroreflectance originating from a single glass sphere is computed as a function of refractive index using the Fresnel equations, which is then validated as coinciding well with retroreflectance values measured from actual specimens, i.e. glass-bead aggregates. The uncertainties involved are delineated in connection with radius and imperfections of the glass beads.
To investigate the mechanical properties of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Beads Stabilized Lightweight Soil (EBSLS), Laboratory studies were conducted. Totally 20 sets of specimens according to the complete test design were prepared and tested with unconfined compressive test and consolidated drained triaxial test. Results showed that dry density of EBSLS ($0.67-1.62g/cm^3$) decreases dramatically with the increase of EPS beads volumetric content, while increase slightly with the increase of cement content. Unconfined compressive strength (10-2580 kPa) increases dramatically in parabolic relationship with the increase of cement content, while decreases with the increase of EPS beads volumetric content in hyperbolic relationship. Cohesion (31.1-257.5 kPa) increases with the increase of cement content because it is mainly caused by the bonding function of hydration products of cement. The more EPS beads volumetric content is, the less dramatically the increase is, which is a result of the cohesion between hydration products of cement and EPS beads is less than that between hydration products of cement and sand particles. Friction angle ($14.92-47.42^{\circ}$) decreases with the increase of EPS beads volumetric content, which is caused by the smoother surfaces of EPS beads than sand grains. The stress strain curves of EBSLS tend to be more softening with the increase of EPS beads content or the decrease of cement content. The shear contraction of EBSLS increases with the increase of $c_e$ or the decrease of $c_c$. The results provided quantitative relationships between physico-mechanical properties of EBSLS and material proportion, and design process for engineering application of EBSLS.
This paper describes fabrication of a micro cell counter integrated with an oxygen micropump and Sephadex G-25 beads counting experiment. The device utilized a phototransistor, microwindow, and light source of microscope for beads detection. Microheater and microchannel were used for pumping and guiding of beads to the microwindow. Counting capability of the device was tested with a peristaltic pump and the measured signals (${\sim}10\;mV$) with oscilloscope showed peak shape when beads passed the microwindow. Pumping of beads by the oxygen micropump was carried out by heating paraffin, which enveloped manganese dioxide (catalyst), to trigger the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. It lasted for 5 min with $7\;{\mu}l$ of wt. 30 % hydrogen peroxide. Beads counting by oxygen micropump showed peaks ($2{\sim}20\;mV$) with $30\;{\mu}l$ of beads sample and the number of peaks by magnitude was acquired.
