  • Gindai (Pristipomoides zonatus) is one of six snappers in a management complex called the Deep 7 of the Hawaiian Islands. Little is known about its life history and a preliminary analysis of otolith thin sections indicated the species may exhibit moderate growth with a lifespan approaching 40 years. Preliminary age estimates from the previous study were reinvestigated using the same otolith sections in an attempt to validate those ages with bomb radiocarbon (14C) dating. From the misalignment of birth years for the otolith 14C measurements with regional references - the post-peak bomb 14C decline period - it was concluded that previous ages were inflated from overcounting of the earliest growth zone structure in otolith sections. The oldest gindai was re-aged to 26 years once the age reading was adjusted for early overcounting, 13 years younger than the original estimate of 39 years for this fish. In general, the earliest otolith growth of gindai was massive and complicated by numerous subannual checks. The approach of lumping the early growth structures was supported by the alignment of 14C measurements from otolith core material (first year of growth). The result was greater consistency of calculated birthdates with the 14C decline reference, along with minor offsets that may indicate age estimation was imprecise by a few years for some individuals. The revised von Bertalanffy growth function applied to the validated age-at-length estimates revealed more rapid growth (k = 0.378 cf. 0.113) and a lifespan of approximately 30 years. The findings presented here are a case study of how the bomb 14C decline period can be used as a tool in the refinement of age reading protocols.

  • In order to investigate absolute age of marine sediment in the KR5 region, northeastern Pacific, we measured the Be isotope ($^{10}Be$ and $^{9}Be$) of box core (BC08-02-13) sediment with depth. Core sediment is divided into three sedimentary facies (Facies I, Facies II, FaciesIII). Facies I mainly consists of brown to dark brown (10YR4/3) homogeneous mud with high water content. Facies II shows brownish yellow (10YR6/6) color. The unconformity is recognized at the boundary between Facies I and Facies II, Facies III consists of very dark brown (10YR2/2) mud. Many bioturbated burrows are observed at FaciesII and FaciesIII. Based on Be dating results, FaciesIII and Facies II had been deposited before 3.7 Ma and 2.3 Ma, respectively. After 2.3 Ma, the upper part of Facies II was eroded due to the change of sedimenary environment. Facies I has been deposited since 1.8 Ma. The unconformity located at the boundary between Facies I and Facies II may be driven by the envrionmental change due to the migration of Intertropical Convergence Zone.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the physicochemical characteristics and formation age of sand dunes in the Okjukdong and Dajindong, Daecheong Island. As a result, most of the sand deposited in Okjukdong were composed of medium sized sand with moderately well sorted. The $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ accounted for a very high proportion of these deposits. There were some differences in characteristics between the sands in the dune and beach, whereas similar characteristics were observed among the materials (OJ-B, OJ-C and OJ-D) in the dune. In case of Dajindong, heterogeneous geochemical characteristics were found in the lower point. It was estimated that this was due to the influence of Daejin-dong black beach. Age dating results showed that uncovered dunes in Okjukdong were deposited $0.44{\pm}0.02$ ~ $0.50{\pm}0.02ka$, and sand depositsin Dajindong were formed $0.16{\pm}0.01$ ~ $0.18{\pm}0.01ka$. In both Okjukdong and Dajindong, sand deposits estimated to be formed 70 years ago, therefore it can be estimated that sand movement was active throughout the area from about hundred years ago. In this study area, the growth of sand dunes has been active in recent several decades or hundred years. It seems that there were different regions where deposits predominated over time. The source of dune sand was also different from time to time. Since the windbreak forest was established, the natural growth of sand dunes was limited, and sand nourishment was carried out by period. Therefore, in order to protect and continuously utilize coastalsand dunesin Daecheong Island, it is necessary to prepare conservation plan.

  • Consolidation properties were analysed by means of depositional environments. Depositional environments including geochemical properties, porewater chemistry, sediment structures, particle size distributions and carbon age dating were analysed using undisturbed samples retrieved successively from a boring hole in the study area. Laboratory oedometer tests and anisotropic consolidated triaxial tests(CKoUC) were performed to examine the overconsolidation phenomenons. Based on the carbon age dating results and profiles of geochemical properties, porewater chemistry, salinity and pH, it was founded that the upper silt/clay complex layer was deposited under marine condition while sand and clay layers were deposited under fluvial condition. Planar laminated structures of silts and clays were dominant in marine deposits. Although there was no clear evidences that geological erosion had been occurred in marine deposits, overconsolidation ratio obtained from oedometer tests were greater than unity. Stress paths of samples behaved similar to those of normally consolidated clays. Data plotted in stress state charts proposed by Burland(1990) and Chandler(2000) showed that the marine deposits were geologically normally consolidated. These apparent overconsolidations can be explained by the fabric and chemical bonding due to the difference of the rate of deposition.

  • This study tried to reveal distribution of incision rate and the factors from fluvial terrace deposits on the western and eastern slopes in the Middle Sobaek Mountain Range, using OSL age dating and topographical analysis. An average incision rate of 0.220 m/ka was estimated in the western slope streams, while the streams on the eastern slope showed a lower average incision rate of 0.121 m/ka. These results seem to indicate that the study area experienced an asymmetric uplift. Patterns of incision rate in the study area were different from those in the Northern Sobaek Mountain Range, probably suggesting that the Sobaek Mountain Range experienced spatially different uplift patterns. Among the factors, which were considered to influence on distribution of incision rate in the study area (e.g., altitude of sampling point, distance from divide, distance from axis, channel width, and bedrock type), distance from axis showed the strongest relationship with incision rate. Therefore, uplift is thought to be the most significant factor in distribution of incision rate in the Middle Sobaek Mountain Range.

  • We conducted TL/OSL dating for the earthenware kilns in the Bongsan-ri archaeological site, Osong, which was occupied from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. With the SAR-TL/OSL method, paleodose was determined from the equivalent dose during the burial period($ED_{burial}$), the background dose($ED_{BG}$), the fading correction factor(f), and the overestimation correction factor(C). The annual dose rates and their provenance were evaluated from the measurement of natural radionuclides $^{238}U$, $^{232}Th$, and $^{40}K$. Because the comprehensive absolute age was provided by combining the resulting TL/OSL and radiocarbon data, we concluded that, for the absolute chronology of a modern archaeological site, TL/OSL dating and radiocarbon dating must be carried out together and summed. The construction and occupation of earthenware kilns in the Bongsan-ri site had changed from stage I (No.5, 6 kilns), to stage II (No.1, 2, 3 kilns), to stage III (No.4) in chronological order. When Bayesian statistics were applied, we found that the absolute ages of occupation for stages I, II, and III correspond to AD $1910{\pm}23$, AD $1970{\pm}10$, and AD $1987{\pm}4$. These results were in good agreement with the archaeological context or chronology.

  • Here we firstly present that a timing of reactivated event of Yangsan fault, the major fault in the southeastern Korean Peninsula, by using combined approaches of the optimized illite-polytype quantification, the K-Ar age-dating, and the recently developed illite-age-analysis (IAA) approach for the fault clays from Sangcheon-ri area of Yangsan main fault line. Two chronological record of brittle fault-activation event at about 41.5~43.5 and 50.7 Ma were determined from 3 fault gouges suggesting a crucial reactivation time-scheme. Furthermore, the regional processes that drive tectonics to form and reactivate the Yangsan fault may be explained from the chronological analysis for additional sites along the Yangsan fault.

  • This study examined how the rejection sensitivity model might be applied to the link between rejection sensitivity and dating relationship satisfaction by means of investigating the mediating effect of cognitive emotion regulation strategy and conflict resolution strategy. A total of 668 college students in Seoul (232 males, 436 females, mean age of 21.59 years [SD=2.08]) participated in this study. The results illustrated that the adaptive emotion regulation strategy, among cognitive emotion regulation strategies, and the integration and compromise strategies, among conflict resolution strategies, had the double mediation effect on the association between rejection sensitivity and dating relationship satisfaction. In other words, a direct negative correlation between rejection sensitivity and dating relationship satisfation resulted in high rejection sensitivity, which was expected to generate low satisfaction in dating relationships. However, it was confirmed that the use of these two strategies-the cognitive emotion regulation and the conflict resolution strategy-could bring positive effects in terms of the dating relationship satisfaction; the former helped couples to see situations more broadly and increase positive perceptions, while the latter solve their problems each other. Based on these findings, we discuss their implications for counseling practice and therapeutic interventions

  • Issues of chronology on archaeological remains or relics have been a storm-center of controversy when various archaeological researches have been done. Sometimes there is a limit for figuring out issues of chronology by archaeological research. In that case, the field of natural science is often needed to work out issues of chronology. Among various subjects in natural science, archaeomagnetism plays an important role in dating archaeological remains for baked earth bearing relics. In particular, archaeomagnetism is of use for sites where directly excavated dating proxy is unavailable. Terrestrial magnetism changes along with the passage of time and leaves trace by many kinds of residual magnetization which could be called fossil of terrestrial magnetism. Archaeomagnetic dating method is used to assign a date to the archaeological remains in which baked earth is found by measuring the changes of terrestrial magnetism through the thermal remanent magnetization retained in baked earth. This study aims to constrain the age of fire at Buinsa, Daege, Korea using 27 samples that were collected from a layer of baked earth. Buinsa is famous for the place where kept the first edition of Tripitaka Koreana, which was lost in fire at the second invasion of mongolia. In addition, there is a record that there was revolt around this region in A.D.1203. According to archaeomagnetic dating, ages of A.D.1150~1200 and A.D.1130~1210 were assigned for the two building sites in Buinsa, respectively. To this end, it can be concluded that the layer of baked earth on the two building sites in Buinsa recorded the vestige of fire caused by revolt.

  • This study aims to determine the sunlight exposure according to depositional environment to improve the accuracy of optically simulated luminescence (OSL) dating. Sufficient sunlight exposure during transportation of sediment is a basic assumption of the OSL dating, and if the process does not occur enough, the results may be overestimated compared to the actual depositional age. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to establish a correction method by determining residual or unbleachable dose after sunlight exposure in the actual deposition process, not in the laboratory measurement. Four samples from two sites were collected according to the depositional environment from rivers and coasts, and various OSL signals, including the size of residual dose, degree of dispersion between grains, and OSL signal sensitivity, were measured. As a result, it was confirmed that sediments formed under temporarily high energy environments, such as floods and surges, had relatively high residual dose or large dispersion of residual dose between particles. In further studies, the OSL signal characteristics of river sediments by flow velocity will be identified and the relationship between energy and OSL signal characteristics will be identified in more detail. Moreover, a method of reconstructing the paleo-environment at the time of deposition for existing sediments will be devised. It is expected to provide important information for the frequency of disaster recurrence and prediction of future climate change.
