  • Since cyber operations are performed in a virtual cyber battlefield, the measurement indicators that can evaluate and visualize the current state of the cyber environment in a consistent form are required for the commander to effectively support the decision-making of cyber operations. In this paper, we propose a method to define various evaluation indicators that can be collected on the cyber battlefield, normalized them, and evaluate the cyber status in a consistent form. The proposed cyber battlefield status element consists of cyber asset-related indicators, target network-related indicators, and cyber threat-related indicators. Each indicator has 6 sub-indicators and can be used by assigning weights according to the commander's interests. The overall status of the cyber battlefield can be easily recognized because the measured indicators are visualized in time series on a single screen. Therefore, the proposed method can be used for the situational awareness required to effectively conduct cyber warfare.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to build a knowledge base based on natural language processing for intelligent battlefield awareness service. The current command and control system manages and utilizes the collected battlefield information and tactical data at a basic level such as registration, storage, and sharing, and information fusion and situation analysis by an analyst is performed. This is an analyst's temporal constraints and cognitive limitations, and generally only one interpretation is drawn, and biased thinking can be reflected. Therefore, it is essential to aware the battlefield situation of the command and control system and to establish the intellignet decision support system. To do this, it is necessary to build a knowledge base specialized in the command and control system and develop intelligent battlefield awareness services based on it. In this paper, among the entity names suggested in the exobrain corpus, which is the private data, the top 250 types of meaningful names were applied and the weapon system entity type was additionally identified to properly represent battlefield information. Based on this, we proposed a way to build a battlefield-aware knowledge base through mention extraction, cross-reference resolution, and relationship extraction.

  • This paper describes a comprehensive analysis of the air defense capability of Aegis class ships on the netted battlefield. A principal threat to ships at sea is anti-ship cruise missiles. The missiles flies lower, faster, and with less radar cross section than its predecessors. Therefore, the ship of the 21s1 century must have the future operational capability based NCW to engage this threat and then the survivability of ship can be guaranteed. This operational concept is reflected in Aegis ship and CEC of US navy, In the near future, the korean navy will be possessed a few Aegis class ships. In this view, this paper has analyzed the intercept range of the sea-skimming ASCM to measure the area defense capability of the Aegis ship in PCW and NCW, respectively and presented the air defense capability of the ship on the netted battlefield.

  • Modern warfare, which adopt an intensive technique of applied sciences, is difficult to predict, and has a high complexity. Thus, it is necessary to build a battle-field environment and simulation-based analysis. Various organizations are participated to build battlefield model for defense M&S according to a scale and format. On the basis of this trend, approaching from various systems is needed to reconfigure battlefield modeling for distributed system. This paper proposes building design for battlefield simulation environment with a sample of one-to-one single unit engagement model. The proposed method can expect to utilize an example of distributed environment for various participants that are involved in battlefield modeling and simulation.

  • In the era of Fourth Industrial Revolution, secure networking technology is playing an essential role in the defense weapon systems. Encryption technology is used for information security. The safety of cryptographic technology, according to Kerchoff's principles, is based on secure key management of cryptographic technology, not on cryptographic algorithms. However, traditional centralized key management is one of the problematic issues in battlefield environments since the frequent movement of the forces and the time-varying quality of tactical networks. Alternatively, the system resources of each node used in the IoBT(Internet of Battlefield Things) environment are limited in size, capacity, and performance, so a lightweight key management system with less computation and complexity is needed than a conventional key management algorithm. This paper proposes a novel key escrow scheme in a lightweight manner for the IoBT environment. The safety and performance of the proposed technique are verified through numerical analysis and simulations.

  • The cyber battlefield called the fifth battlefield, is not based on geological information unlike the existing traditional battlefiels in the land, sea, air and space, and has a characteristics that all information has tightly coupled correlation to be anlayized. Because the cyber battlefield has created by the network connection of computers located on the physical battlefield, it is not completely seperated from the geolocational information but it has dependency on network topology and software's vulnerabilities. Therefore, the analysis for cyber battlefield should be provided in a form that can recognize information from multiple domains at a glance, rather than a single geographical or logical aspect. In this paper, we describe a study on the development of the cyber operation COP(Common Operational Picture), which is essential for command and control in the cyber warfare. In particular, we propose an architecure for cyber operation COP to intuitively display information based on visualization techniques applying the multi-layering concept from multiple domains that need to be correlated such as cyber assets, threats, and missions. With this proposed cyber operation COP with multi-layered visualization that helps to describe correlated information among cyber factors, we expect the commanders actually perfcrm cyber command and control in the very complex and unclear cyber battlefield.

  • A GIS based tactical terrain analysis system named ATTAS(Army Tactical Terrain Analysis Software) has been designed and implemented to support the field commanders for enhancing the capabiliy of their unit and efficiency of weapon system. This system is designed to provide computer graphics environment in which the analyst can interactively operate the entire analyzing process such as selecting the area of interest, performing analysis functions, simulating required battlefield operation and display the results. This system can be divided into three major sections; the terrain analysis modules, utilites, and graphic editor. The terrain analysis module inclused surface analysis, line of sight analysis, enemy disposition, 3D display, radar coverage, logistic route analysis, shortest path analysis, atmospheric phenomena prediction, automated IPB (Inteligence preparation of Battlefield), and other applied analysis. A combination of 2D and 3D computer graphics techniques using the X-window system with OSF/Motif in UNIX workstation was adopted as the user interface. The integration technique of remotely sensed images and GIS data such as precision registration, overlay, and on-line editing was developed and implemented. An efficient image and GIS data management technique was also developed and implemented using Oracle Database Management System.

  • It must be possible to assess how combat actions taking place in cyberspace affect the military's major mission systems and weapon systems. In order to analyze the mission impact caused by a cyber attack through cyber M&S, the target mission system and cyber warfare elements must be built as a model and a scenario for simulation must be authored. Many studies related to mission impact analysis due to cyber warfare have been conducted focusing on the United States, and existing studies have authored separate scenarios for physical battlefields and cyber battlefields. It is necessary to build a simulation environment that combines a physical battlefield model and a cyber battlefield model, and be able to integrate and author mission scenarios and cyber attack/defense scenarios. In addition, the physical battlefield and cyber battlefield are different work areas, so authoring two types of scenarios for simulation is very complicated and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a method of using mission system information to prepare the data needed for scenario authoring in advance and using the pre-worked data to author an integrated scenario. The proposed method is being developed by reflecting it in the design of the scenario authoring tool, and an integrated scenario authoring in the field of counter-fire warfare is being performed to prove the proposed method. In the future, by using a scenario authoring tool that reflects the proposed method, it will be possible to easily author an integrated scenario for mission impact analysis in a short period of time.

  • NCW(Network Centric Warfare) offers BSEs(Battelspace-Entities) the capabilities of sharing information through C4ISRCommand, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) network and it also improves their combat powers based on information superiority with awareness of common situation in battlefield and self-synchronization. Although the concept of NCW was developed at the end of 1990 and there have been various studies for NCW from the development of its concept, the effort for measuring the synergistic effect of NCW is insufficient at the present time. Therefore, in this paper we reviewed literatures concerning the effectiveness measurement of NCW. The category of our survey is network effect, metrics, simulation, battlefield information, social network analysis and mathematical model. The main purpose of this study is to suggest future researchers a research direction by analyzing the aspects and limitations of existing studies about the quantitative measurement of NCW.

  • Military robots are expected to play an important role in the future battlefield, and will be actively engaged in dangerous, repetitive and difficult tasks. During the robots perform the tasks a human operator controls the robots in a supervisory way. The operator recognizes battlefield situations from remote robots through an interface of the operator control center, and controls them. In the meantime, operator workload, controller interface, robot automation level, and task complexity affect robot operability. In order to assess the robot operability, we have developed ROSim (Robot Operational Simulator) incorporating these operational factors. In this paper, we introduce the results of applying ROSim experimentally to the assessment of reconnaissance robot operability in a battle field. This experimental assessment shows three resulting measurements: operational control workload, operational control capability, mission success rate, and discuss its applicability to the defense robot research and development. It is expected that ROSim can contribute to the design of an operator control center and the design analysis of a human-robot team in the defense robot research and development.
