The extension of DC battery backup time in the DC power supply system of nuclear power plants (NPPs) remains a challenge. The lead-acid battery is the most popular at present. And it is generally the most popular energy storage device. However, extension of backup time requires too much space. The lithium-ion battery has high energy density and advanced gravimetric and volumetric properties. The aim of this paper is development of the sizing formula of stationary lithium-ion batteries. The ongoing research activities and related industrial standards for stationary lithium-ion batteries are reviewed. Then, the lithium-ion battery sizing calculation formular is proposed for the establishment of industrial design standard which is essential for the design of stationary batteries of nuclear power plants. An example of calculating the lithium-ion battery capacity for a medium voltage UPS is presented.

The emergency power supplies (EPSs) are required to increase battery sizing for protecting power source loss above designed criteria. This study proposes a sizing method for lithium-based batteries for EPSs in nuclear power plants on the basis of the calculation method for the required energy under variable conditions. The variable conditions are related with the characteristics of lithium-based batteries, such as the temperature of the location of EPS installation, aging, and design margin. The usage of lithium-based battery reduces the cost and installation space and enables the safe and long-term supply of power compared with the use of lead-acid battery.

Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) is one of the most promising candidates for the next generation of transportation. It has many outstanding advantages such as higher energy efficiency and much lower emissions than internal combustion engine vehicles. It also has the ability of recovering braking energy. In order to design an FCHV drive train, we need to determine the size of the electric motor, the Fuel Cell System (FCS), and the battery. In this paper, the methodology for the sizing of these components is introduced based on the driveability constraints of the FCHV. A power management strategy is also presented because the battery energy capacity depends on it. The warm-up time of the FCS is also considered in the power management strategy and the simulation result is compared to that without considering the warm-up time.

The paper proposed a sizing method of an energy storage system(ESS) for peak shaving of high-speed railway substations based on load profile patterns of substations. A lithium based battery ESS was selected since it can produce high-power at high speed that peak shaving requires, and also takes up a relatively smaller space for installation. Adequate size of the ESS, minimum capacity which can technically meet a peak shaving target, was determined by collectively considering load patterns of a target substation, characteristics of the ESS to be installed, and optimal scheduling of the ESS. In case study, a local substation was considered to demonstrate the proposed sizing method. Also economic analysis with the determined size of ESS was performed to calculate electricity cost savings of the peak shaving ESS, and to offer pay-back period and return on investment.

Sensitivity of aircraft sizing depending on battery performance was studied for a generic quad tilt rotor type electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. The mission requirements proposed by Uber Elevate and NASA were used for initial sizing, and the calculated gross weight is ranged between 5,000lb and 11,000lb for battery specific energy range of 200-400Wh/kg in pack level and continuous discharge rate range of 4-5C. For the assumed gross weight of 7,000lb, the required battery performance was calculated with two different criteria: available power and energy, and the effects of battery specific energy and discharge rate are analyzed. The maximum discharge rate is also recommended considering failure cases such as one battery pack inoperative and one prop rotor inoperative.

It is very important to determine specifications of components included in the drive-train of vehicles at the initial design stage. In this study, component sizing process and performance analysis for Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (E-REV) are discussed based on the foundation of determined system configuration and performance target. This process shows sizing results of an electric driving motor, a final drive gear ratio and a battery capacity for target performance including All Electric Range (AER) limit. For E-REV driving mode, the constant output power of a Gen-set (Engine+Generator) is analyzed in order to sustain State of Charge (SOC) of the battery system.

The study is conducted on the subject of optimization of components sizing for series hybrid electric propulsion systems. The components sizing of series type hybrid system is very important because each component of series type is larger than the corresponding component of the parallel type or series-parallel type. If the components sizing is greater or less than what is required to this system, the performance of the system is getting worse. The methodology for the sizing of a driving motor is introduced based on the foundation of determined system configuration and performance target. And the sizing of an engine/generator and a battery is achieved based on simulation results using Dynamic Programming. It is possible to find the optimal sizing of these components by comparing fuel efficiency of hybrid electric propulsion system for 8 driving cycles.

In this study, the design and operating strategy of DC home grid with PV, battery, and ultracapacitor have been discussed, The proposed sizing method can find the optimum size of the battery and PV which can reduce yearly utility energy consumption, whereas the control scheme can maintain the DC-bus voltage level of the DC home grid under different operating conditions, where day or night time operation, load and PV power levels, and the maximum current and state-of-charge of batter are considered. In addition, a supervisory power management strategy has been suggested, and its validity has been verified by HILS (hardware in-the-loop simulation) results.

A structural weight estimation methodology for the multicopter design process is presented. In general, a multicopter is composed of an airframe, motors, propellers, battery and so on. Among these, the weight of motors, propellers and battery can be obtained from the weight trends with respect to design parameters. However, the structural weight is hard to be estimated due to the various configurations and design concepts of multicopters. Moreover, the airframe weights of most commercial multicopter products are not provided. Thus, an accurate airframe weight model is required for the reliable mutlcopter design process. Firstly, the standard configuration of multicopters is defined. Then, we proposed the structural weight estimation method using the number and diameter of propellers determined from the initial step of sizing process. Finally, we validated our suggested method using the commerical products.

This paper presents the method of ESS energy capacity calculation for stand-alone renewable energy generation system consisting of photovoltaic energy. There is almost no power from photovoltaic system during sunless days. So this source is very weak in terms of the power supply reliability. To improve problem of power supply, battery is mainly used Energy Storage System(ESS). The number of sunless days and Depth of Discharge(DOD) is important factor to determine energy capacity of battery. However, a many study for economical design is required due to the high cost of ESS. In this paper, we propose the new method of ESS energy capacity calculation by applying different DOD for operation with and without sun. We determine the Battery capacity using higher DOD of operation during sunless day than the DOD of the normal operation. And we carried out an economic analysis of the calculation results.
