In industrial situation, electronic and electro-mechanical systems have been using different type of batteries in rapidly increasing numbers. These systems commonly require high reliability for long periods of time. Wider application of battery for low-power design as a prime power source requires us knowledge of failure mechanism and reliability of batteries in terms of load condition, environment condition and other explanatory variables. Battery life is an important factor that affects the reliability of such systems. There is need for us to understand the mechanism leading to the failure state of battery with performance characteristic and develop a method to predict the life of such battery. The purpose of this paper is to develope the methodology of monitoring the health of battery and determining the condition or fate of such systems through the performance reliability to predict the remaining useful life of primary battery with load condition, operating condition, environment change in light of battery life variation. In order to evaluate on-going performance of systems and subsystems adopting primary batteries as energy source, The primitive prototype for performance reliability analysis device was developed and related framework explained.

Lithium-ion batteries have been used in energy storage systems (ESS), electric vehicles (EVs), etc. due to their high safety, fast charging and long lifecycle. This paper aims to improve the convenience of users by changing the wired battery stack used in the battery pack, wirelessly using RFID, reducing the internal volume of the battery pack, reducing the size of the battery pack. In this paper, we propose a battery management system which can provide the flexibility of battery pack expansion and maintenance by using lithium ion battery, battery management system (BMS) and wireless communication for light weight of 1Kw small battery pack. Also, by flexibly arranging the cell layout inside the battery pack and designing to reduce the size of the outer shape of the battery pack.

Every autonomous system like a robot needs a power source known as a battery. And proper management of the battery is very important for proper operation. To know State of Charge(SOC) of a battery is the very core of proper battery management. In this paper, the SOC estimation problem is tackled based on the well known Extended Kalman Filter(EKF). Combined the existing battery model is used and then EKF is employed to estimate the SOC. SOC table is constructed by extensive experiment under various conditions and used as a true SOC. To verify the estimation result, extensive experiment is performed with various loads. The comparison result shows the battery estimation problem can be well solved with the technique proposed in this paper. The result of this paper can be used to develop related autonomous system.
Within the project 'e performance' supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) an electric vehicle, powered by two lithium-ion battery packs of different capacity and voltage has been developed. The required Energy Management System (EMS) in this system controls the current flows of both packs independently by means of two individual dc-dc converters. It acts as an intermediary between energy storage (battery management systems-BMS) and the drivetrain controller on the vehicle control unit (VCU) as well as the on-board charger. This paper describes the most important tasks of the EMS and its interfaces to the BMS and the VCU. To validate the algorithms before integrating them into the vehicle prototype, a detailed Matlab / Simulink-model was created in the project. Test procedures and results from the simulation as well as experiences and comparisons from the real car are presented at the end.

The Li-ion battery is considered to be one of the potential power sources for electric vehicles. In fact, the efficiency, reliability, and cycle life of Li-ion batteries are highly influenced by their thermal conditions. Therefore, a novel thermal management system is highly required to simultaneously achieve high performance and long life of the battery pack. Basically, thermal modeling is a key issue for the novel thermal management of Li-ion battery systems. In this paper, as a basic study for battery thermal modeling, temperature distributions inside the simple Li-ion battery pack (comprises of nine 18650 Li-ion batteries) under a 1C discharging condition were investigated using measurement and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation approaches. The heat flux boundary conditions of battery cells for the CFD thermal analysis of battery pack were provided by the measurement of single battery cell temperature. The temperature distribution inside the battery pack were compared at six monitoring locations. Results show that the accurate estimation of heat flux at the surface of single cylindrical battery is paramount to the prediction of temperature distributions inside the Li-ion battery under various discharging conditions (C-rates). It is considered that the research approach for the estimation of temperature distribution used in this study can be used as a basic tool to understand the thermal behavior of Li-ion battery pack for the construction of effective battery thermal management systems.

In the future, hybrid power management systems using fuel cells (FCs) and batteries will be used as the driving power systems of ships. These systems consist of an FC, a converter, an inverter, and a battery. In general, an FC provides steady-state energy; a battery provides the dynamic energy in the start state of a ship for enabling a smooth operation, and provides or absorbs the peak or dynamic power when the load varies and the FC cannot respond immediately. The FC voltage range is very wide and depends on the load; Therefore, the FC cannot directly connect to the inverter. In this paper, we propose a power management strategy and design process involving a unidirectional converter, a bidirectional converter, and an inverter, considering the ship's operating conditions and the power conditions of the FC and the battery. The presented experimental results were verified through a simulation.

Li-ion battery system is regarded as one of the most potent power sources for electrified power-trains. For the Li-ion battery system to be widely adopted in automotive applications, the performance, safety, and cycle life issues need to be properly addressed. These issues are closely related to the thermal management of battery system. Especially, the effective cooling module design is the core part for the novel battery thermal management system development. In this paper, an experimental approach was carried out as a basic part of comprehensive battery thermal management research. The main goal of this paper is to present a comparison of two cooling systems (air cooling and phase change material (PCM) based cooling) of the unit 18650 battery module. The temperature rise with different battery discharge rate (c-rate) was mainly investigated and analyzed for two types of battery cooling systems. It is expected that this study can properly contribute to providing basic insights into the design of robust battery thermal management system for vehicular applications.

The performance and cost of electric vehicles (EVs) are much influenced by the performance and service life of the Li-ion battery system. In particular, the cell performance and reliability of Li-ion battery packs are highly dependent on their operating temperature. Therefore, a novel battery thermal management is crucial for Li-ion batteries owing to heat dissipation effects on their performance. Among various types of battery thermal management systems (BTMS'), the phase change material (PCM) based BTMS is considered to be a promising cooling system in terms of guaranteeing the performance and reliability of Li-ion batteries. This work is mainly concerned with the basic research on PCM based BTMS. In this paper, a basic experimental study on PCM based battery cooling system was performed. The main purpose of the present study is to present a comparison of two PCM-based cooling systems (n-Eicosane and n-Docosane) of the unit 18650 battery module. To this end, the simplified PCM-based Li-ion battery module with two 18650 batteries was designed and fabricated. The thermal behavior (such as temperature rise of the battery pack) with various discharge rates (c-rate) was mainly investigated and compared for two types of battery systems employing PCM-based cooling. It is considered that the results obtained from this study provide good fundamental data on screening the appropriate PCMs for future research on PCM based BTMS for EV applications.

When lithium-ion batteries operate out of the proper temperature range, their performance can be significantly degraded and safety issues such as thermal runaway can occur. Therefore, battery thermal management systems are widely researched to maintain the temperature of Li-ion battery cells within the proper temperature range during the charging and discharging process. This study investigates the cooling performance and isothermal maintenance of cooling materials by measuring the surface temperature of a battery cell with or without cooling materials, such as silicone oil, thermal adhesive, and phase change materials during discharge process of battery by the experimental and numerical analysis. As a result of the experiment, the battery pack filled with phase change material showed a temperature reduction of 47.4 ℃ compared to the case of natural convection. It proves the advanced utility of the cooling unit using phase change material that is suitable for use in battery thermal management systems.
The Wireless low floor tram uses the energy more effectively than other systems with onboard battery system. But for this the SOC(state of charge) management of the battery system is required. This paper is focused on the SOC management strategy of battery system for propulsion in wireless low floor tram. For minimizing consumption energy, the SOC management strategy that maximizes the regeneration energy is studied. The SOC operating region is divided to overcome the limited life cycle pointed out as a disadvantage of battery system. And the effective energy management strategy of tram is suggested through the charge/discharge of the battery system according to tram status in catenary/catenary-free section.
