  • In industrial situation, electronic and electro-mechanical systems have been using different type of batteries in rapidly increasing numbers. These systems commonly require high reliability for long periods of time. Wider application of battery for low-power design as a prime power source requires us knowledge of failure mechanism and reliability of batteries in terms of load condition, environment condition and other explanatory variables. Battery life is an important factor that affects the reliability of such systems. There is need for us to understand the mechanism leading to the failure state of battery with performance characteristic and develop a method to predict the life of such battery. The purpose of this paper is to develope the methodology of monitoring the health of battery and determining the condition or fate of such systems through the performance reliability to predict the remaining useful life of primary battery with load condition, operating condition, environment change in light of battery life variation. In order to evaluate on-going performance of systems and subsystems adopting primary batteries as energy source, The primitive prototype for performance reliability analysis device was developed and related framework explained.

  • Electric vehicles should be connected to power system for charge and discharge of battery. Besides vehicle's battery is charged for a power source, it is also reversibly possible to provide power source from battery to power system. Researches on battery usage for regulation resources have been progressed and could cause cost increase excessively because they distribute regulation capacity equally without considering the battery wear cost of SOC, temperature, voltage and so on. This causes increase of grid maintenance cost and aggravate economical efficiency. In this paper it is studied that the cost could be minimized according to the battery condition and characteristic. The equation is developed in this paper to calculate the possible number of charge and discharge cycle, according to SOC level and weighting factors representing the relation between battery life and temperature as well as voltage. Thereafter, the correlation is inferred between the battery condition and wear cost reflecting the battery price, and the expense of compensation is decided according to the condition on battery wear-out of vehicle. In addition, using realtime error between load and load expectation, it is calculated how much regulation capacity should be provided.

  • The 18650 battery cell is known to be reliable and cost effective, but it has a design limitation and low electric capacity compared to pouch-type cells. Because its economy is superior, an 18650-cell-type battery pack is chosen. A reliable temperature is very important in automobile battery packs. Therefore, in this study, the temperature stability of the battery pack is predicted using CFD simulation. Following 3C discharge tests, the results for the heat generation of the battery cell are compared to the simulation results. Based on these results, a natural convection condition, forced convection condition, direct cell-cooling condition, cooling condition on the upper and lower surfaces of the battery pack, and cooling condition using air channels are all simulated. The results indicate that the efficiency and the performance of the air-channel-type cooling system is good.

  • The latest generation of tram is low-floor design, various nations in europe and japan have developed battery driven hybrid trams that combine battery and wiring. Battery driven tram system is achieved by contactless power supply system, thus system is needed high efficiency, high power and low weight traction motor for maximization of energy efficiency. Research from abroad is still in induction motor(IM) application, and it is not meet the efficiency and the power per unit volume in IPMSM. In this paper, we design compare IM and IPMSM to apply battery driven tram, and then compare these motors. To design the motor, we estimate the loading condition at first. Loading condition includes rolling resistance, air-drag resistance, and slope resistance. Based on the loading condition by estimation, we determine the power and compute rated voltage and rated current. In this paper, voltage is limited by battery voltage level. As a result, volume about IM is 1.98 times bigger than IPMSM under same condition. Even though IPMSM is bigger than IM in power density per volume, we consider more factors for actual application because there are demagnetization of permanent magnet in IPMSM and so on by external environment conditions.

  • As the use of electric vehicles has increased to minimize carbon emissions, the analyzing the state and performance of lithium-ion batteries that is instrumental in electric vehicles have been important. Comprehensive analysis using not only the voltage, current and temperature of the battery pack, which can affect the condition and performance of the battery, but also the driving data and charging pattern data of the electric vehicle is required. Therefore, a thorough analysis is imperative, utilizing electric vehicle operation data, charging pattern data, as well as battery pack voltage, current, and temperature data, which collectively influence the condition and performance of the battery. Therefore, collection and preprocessing of battery data collected from electric vehicles, collection and preprocessing of data on driver driving habits in addition to simple battery data, detailed design and modification of artificial intelligence algorithm based on the analyzed influencing factors, and A battery analysis and evaluation model was designed. In this paper, we gathered operational data and battery data from real-time electric buses. These data sets were then utilized to train a Random Forest algorithm. Furthermore, a comprehensive assessment of battery status, operation, and charging patterns was conducted using the explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) algorithm. The study identified crucial influencing factors on battery status, including rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration, sudden stops in driving patterns, the number of drives per day in the charging and discharging pattern, daily accumulated Depth of Discharge (DOD), cell voltage differences during discharge, maximum cell temperature, and minimum cell temperature. These factors were confirmed to significantly impact the battery condition. Based on the identified influencing factors, a battery analysis and evaluation model was designed and assessed using the Random Forest algorithm. The results contribute to the understanding of battery health and lay the foundation for effective battery management in electric vehicles.

  • The lifetime of a lithium-ion battery is one of the most important issues of the energy storage system (ESS) because of its stable and reliable operation. In this paper, the lifetime management method of the lithium-ion battery for energy storage system is proposed. The lifetime of the lithium-ion battery varies, depending on the power usage, operation condition, and, especially the selected depth of discharge (DOD). The proposed method estimates the total lifetime of the lithium-ion battery by calculating the total transferable energy corresponding to the selected DOD and achievable cycle (ACC) data. It is also demonstrated that the battery model can obtain state of charge (SOC) corresponding to the ESS operation simultaneously. The simulation results are presented performing the proposed lifetime management method. Also, the total revenue and entire lifetime prediction of a lithium-ion battery of ESS are presented considering the DOD, operation and various condition for the nations of USA and Korea using the proposed method.

  • This work presents a high efficiency phase shifted full bridge (PSFB) DC-DC converter for use in the second stage of a battery charger for neighborhood electrical vehicle (EV) applications. In the design of the converter, Lithium-ion battery cells are preferred due to their high voltage and current rates, which provide a high power density. This requires wide range output voltage regulation for PSFB converter operation. In addition, the battery charger works with a light load when the battery charge voltage reaches its maximum value. The soft switching of the PSFB converter depends on the dead time optimization and load condition. As a result, the converter has to work with soft switching at a wide range output voltage and under light conditions to reach high efficiency. The operation principles of the PSFB converter for the continuous current mode (CCM) and the discontinuous current mode (DCM) are defined. The performance of the PSFB converter is analyzed in detail based on wide range output voltage and load conditions in terms of high efficiency. In order to validate performance analysis, a prototype is built with 42-54 V / 15 A output values at a 200 kHz switching frequency. The measured maximum efficiency values are obtained as 94.4% and 76.6% at full and at 2% load conditions, respectively.

  • A new approach to developing battery SOC indicator for electric vehicle is discussed in this paper. One of the most difficult problems associated with the development of electric vehicle is the battery indicator which reliably informs the state of charge(SOC) of the battery to the driver. And the condition to be satisfied with SOC indicator installed on the electric vehicle is that it should be used under frequently variable load. A new method to determining SOC using neural networks(NN) is proposed to satify the condition. The training data of NN are obtained by using mathematical model of lead-acid battery, and calculating discharge currents and terminal voltages while battery discharges with constant current. The 3-layered NN with back propagation algorithm is used Simulation results show that the proposed method is appropriate as SOC indicator of the battery.
