Performance Improvement of a Bidirectional DC-DC Converter for Battery Chargers using an LCLC Filter

  • In this paper, a battery charger is introduced for an interleaved DC-DC converter with an LCLC filter. To improve the overall performance of the DC-DC converter for battery charger, a method is proposed. First, the structure of the system is presented. Second, an LC filter is compared to an LCLC filter in terms of the response characteristics and size. Third, the small-signal model of a bidirectional DC-DC converter using a state-space averaging method and the required transfer functions are introduced. Next, the frequency characteristics of the converter are discussed. Finally, the simulation and experimental results are analyzed to verify the proposed state space of the bidirectional converter.

  • The voltage profile during discharge of the zinc air battery has very flat pattern until reach to end of discharge voltage. But, when zinc air battery is discharged by high current, the discharge voltage and energy becomes low. Therefore, we focused on effects of catalyst size to solve this problems by increasing active sites of oxygen reduction reaction. The size of catalyst was reduced from 27 to l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and we examined average discharge voltage, capacity, energy, resistance and characteristics during GSM pulse discharge of zinc air battery with change of current density. And we also measured porosity of the cathode according to the ASTM. So we have got improvement of average discharge voltage and energy when catalyst was minimized and we have got optimum size of catalyst at 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) research is recently actively underway. Especially, fuel cell battery hybrid systems are widely used to overcome the limitations of continuous operation. However, fuel cell systems must be operated in combination with a battery due to their low specific output characteristics. Therefore, a hybrid power system model for UAVs is developed. The rule-based strategy is applied to the model to properly distribute power to batteries and fuel cells. As a result, the designed rule-based power distribution control operates UAVs while maintaining battery state of charge(SOC) at an appropriate level.

  • An Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS) is a system designed to deliver energy during accidents that the AC mains is out of its acceptable limits, without interruption of power flow through the load. Battery Discharger is the device to supply high quality power to the Inverter, when accidents occur, such as Power Failure. The Battery Discharger should have a fast response characteristics. The LLC resonant converter for UPS battery discharger is proposed. The proposed Battery Discharger offers substantial improvements in efficiency, size and cost. The proposed Battery Discharger of UPS approach is a good solution for high power applications above KW. To verify the validity of proposed Battery Discharger, simulations and experiments are carried out.

  • 전기 장치용 리튬폴리머 전지의 전기적 모델링은 전기에너지 공급시스템의 특성을 파악하는데 매우 중요하다. 본 논문은 리튬폴리머 전지의 동적특성을 모사하기 위한 전기적 등가 모델을 제안하였다. 리튬폴리머 전지의 충/방전 실험은 Maccor 8500 충방전시험장치를 사용하였다. 측정된 데이터를 이용하여 전지의 R-C 값을 선정하였으며, 선정된 값은 다항식 함수와 지수 함수를 사용하여 수식으로 나타내었다. 시뮬레이션 결과와 실험결과를 비교하여 제안된 모델의 타당성을 검증하였다

  • Online simulations are utilized to reduce time and cost in the development and performance optimization of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EV) systems. One of the most important factors in an online simulation is the accuracy of the model. In particular, a model of a battery should accurately reflect the properties of an actual battery. However, precise dynamic modeling of high-capacity battery systems, which significantly affects the performance of a PHEV, is difficult because of its nonlinear electrochemical characteristics. In this study, a dynamic model of a high-capacity battery cell for a PHEV is developed through the extraction of the equivalent impedance parameters using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Based on the extracted parameters, a battery cell model is implemented using MATLAB/Simulink, and charging/discharging profiles are executed for comparative verification. Based on the obtained results, the model is optimized for a high-capacity battery cell for a PHEV. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental results, thereby validating the developed model and verifying its accuracy.

  • Recently, in accordance with the demand for a large capacity of a secondary battery according to an increase in the demand for energy storage devices, a modular series battery configuration is essential. Accordingly, various cell balancing techniques have been proposed to prevent high efficiency and performance degradation of the battery. In this paper, propose a battery voltage balancing topology consisting of a flyback DC/DC converter type of a SIMO (Single-Input-Multiple Output) two-switch configuration for a series battery configuration. The proposed topology shows a structure in which a DC/DC converter connected to each module and a battery cell share one transformer. The topology cell balancing operation is a principle in which the voltage balancing converter of the battery converges to the same value through a transformer that shares a magnetic flux with the cells constituting the module through a single high-frequency transformer. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics analysis of the proposed circuit using PSIM was based and it was verified through experiments on one module.

  • The improvement in the battery performance and life using a battery thermal management system directly affects the improvement in the performance, life, and energy efficiency of electric vehicles. Therefore, this study numerically analyzed the heat exchange processes between the coolant inside the cooling plate channel and the heat generated by the battery. The cooling performance was analyzed based on the average temperature, temperature uniformity, and the maximum and minimum temperature differences of the battery. A performance difference existed depending on the coolant inlet temperature but showed the same tendency of cooling performance according to the shape of each plate's channel. Type 1 showed the best results in terms of battery temperature uniformity, which is the most important measure of battery performance; Type 2 showed the best results in terms of the average temperature of the battery; and Type 3 showed the best results in terms of the maximum and minimum temperature differences of the battery compared with that of the other cooling plates.

  • The performance characteristics of a lead acid battery are investigated with the content of Sodium Perborate Tetrahydrate (SPT, NaBO3·4H2O) in a positive plate active material. SPT, which reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide, is applied as an additive in the positive plate active material to increase adhesion between the substrate (positive plate) and the active material; this phenomenon is caused by a chemical reaction on the surface of substrate. A positive plate with the increasing content of SPT is prepared to compare its properties. It is confirmed that the oxide layer increases at the interface between the substrate and the active material with increasing content of SPT; this is proven to be an oxide layer through EDS analysis. Battery performance is confirmed: when SPT content is 2.0 wt%, the charging acceptance and high rate discharge properties are improved. In addition, the lifetime performance according to the Standard of Battery Association of Japan (SBA) S0101 test is improved with increasing content of SPT.

  • Recently, the performance of portable electric equipment can often improved by a Li-ion battery assisted by a supercapacitor. A supercapacitor can provide high power density as well as a low resistance in the hybrid system. In this study, we have prepared, as the pluse power souce, a commercially supplied Li-ion battery with a capacity of 700mAh and AC resistivity of $60m\Omega$ at 1kHz and nonaqeous asymmetric hybrid capacitor composed of an activated carbon cathode and MCMB anode, and have examined the electrochemical characteristics of hybrid capacitor and the pulse performances of parallel connected battery/hybrid capacitor source. The nonaqueous asymmetric hybrid capacitor, the stacks of 10 pairs of the cathode, the porous separator and the anode electrode were housed in Al-laminated film cell. The hybrid capacitor, which was charged and discharged at a constant current at $0.25mA/cm^2$ between 3 and 4.3V, has exhibited the capacitance of 100F. And the equivalent series resistance was $32m\Omega$ at 1kHz. By combining a Li-ion battery and a hybrid capacitor, the pulse performance of battery can be improved 23% in run time under a pulse discharge of 7C-rate.
