  • A dc/dc converter for low voltage of battery application and fuel cell system is required to step up and regulate the low and widely variable voltage. In this paper, we have proposed a soft switching boost converter with high voltage gain using a single switch. Through the theoretical analysis and experimental result, operation modes and characteristics of the proposed topology is verified.

  • 본 논문에서는 고출력 리튬이온 18650 셀(cell) 200개를 사용하여 고출력 어플리케이션의 운용 범위와 동적 특성을 적용한 스크리닝 방법을 제안하였다. 전기적 특성 실험 기반 배터리 용량과 OCV(open circuit voltage)의 요소를 고려한 16개의 내부 파라미터를 추출하고 표준편차 기반 가중치를 선정하였다. 선정된 가중치를 각각의 요소에 적용하여 단위 셀의 대표 값을 결정하고 셀 스크리닝을 수행하였다. 기존의 스크리닝 기법과 제안된 스크리닝 기법을 200개의 단위 셀에 적용하여 두 기법의 차이를 비교 분석하였다.

  • The conventional serial UPS using battery energy storage unit is almost universally used. Despite its common usage, the conventional UPS has a number of disadvantages which may be effectively overcome by the application of flywheel energy storage unit. This paper proposes a new type of parallel processing UPS using flywheel energy storage unit, which has the feature of high power, long life, and high efficiency.

  • Current limiting diode (CLD) was fabricated using junction field effect transistor (JFET) structured two small cells and eight large cells. Two small cells and eight large cells were connected in parallel and the obtained constant current was 110 mA. The application of CLD in each of the parallel circuits on chip on board (COB) type LED lighting source, could significantly reduce the current deviation within the parallel circuits. The applications of CLD on AC power small lighting source, battery power low voltage parallel lighting source and AC flat lighting source were investigated.

  • Metal hydride alloys of TiFe based system have been produced by mechanical alloying(MA) method and their electrochemical characteristics have been evaluated for application for Ni/MH battery electrode. These alloys became amorphous after 36hrs ball milling and easily activated electrochemically. All MA amorphous alloys reached at the first charge/discharge cycle the maximum capacity which was 2-3 times higher than the crystalline state. But their cyclic lives were much inferior to the crystalline state. Alloying elements such as Ni, Co, Cr, Mo substituting Fe greatly improved the capacity and 180 mAh/g capacity was obtained in an alloy of TiFe_{0.6}Ni_{0.1}Co_{0.1}Cr_{0.1}Mo_{0.1}$.

  • Rectangular drawn case with extreme aspect ratio is widely used for electrical parts such as a lithium-ion battery container, semi-conductor case and so on. Additionally, from the recent trend towards miniaturization of the multi-functional mobile device, demands for rectangular case with the narrow width are increased. In this study, numerical and experimental approaches for the multi-stage deep drawing process have been carried out. Based on the research results of the width of 5.95mm model, finite element analysis for storage case of rectangular cup type was verified to the width of 4.95mm. Also, a series of manufacturing experiments for rectangular case is conducted and the deformed configuration of the rectangular drawn case are investigated by comparing with the results of the numerical analysis. And the modification of the initial blank is performed to minimize the trimmed material amount. By the application of the modified blank, the sound shape of the deformed parts is improved.

  • In recent few years, low-power electronics has been a leading drive for technology developments nourished by rapidly growing market share. Mobile DRAM, as a fundamental block of hand-held devices, is now becoming a product developed by limitless competition. To support application specific mobile features, various new power-reduction schemes have been proposed and adopted by standardization. Tightened power budget in battery-operated systems makes conventional schemes not acceptable and increases difficulty of the circuit design. The mobile DRAM has successfully moved down to 1.5V era, and now it is about to move to 1.2V. Further voltage scaling, however, presents critical problems which must be overcome. This paper reviews critical issues in mobile DRAM design and various circuit schemes to solve the problems. Focused on analog circuits, bitline sensing, IO line sensing, refresh-related schemes, DC bias generation, and schemes for higher data rate are covered.

  • Spherical Flying Machine, unlike conventional aircraft structure, is protected by circular frame. This battery-operated propeller machine, which can do vertical take-off and hovering, is under development for indoor and outdoor operation and dubbed as Flying Ball in KARI. In the future, autonomous air vehicle will be constructed for reconnaissance and surveillance application.

Multicomponent wide band gap oxide semiconductors for thin film transistors

  • The recent application of wide band gap oxide semiconductors to transparent thin film transistors (TTFTs) is making a fast and growing (r)evolution on the contemporary solid-state electronics. In this paper we present some of the recent results we have obtained using wide band gap oxide semiconductors, like indium zinc oxide, produced by rf sputtering at room temperature. The devices work in the enhancement mode and exhibit excellent saturation drain currents. On-off ratios above $10^6$ are achieved. The optical transmittance data in the visible range reveals average transmittance higher than 80 %, including the glass substrate. Channel mobilities are also quite respectable, with some devices presenting values around $25\;cm^2/Vs$, even without any annealing or other post deposition improvement processes. The high performances presented by these TTFTs associated to a high electron mobility, at least two orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional amorphous silicon TFTs and a low threshold voltage, opens new doors for applications in flexible, wearable, disposable portable electronics as well as battery-powered applications.

  • A novel single-phase induction machine drive containing full bridge inverter is presented. The drive is intended for conveyor system or a similar type of application requiring variable-speed operation with a fan-type load characteristic. An experimental drive based on the proposed setup has been built to verify its practical viability. The paper presents the results obtained from an investigation and discusses the properties and characteristics of the drive for the entire speed range from 0 to 60Hz.
