This paper introduces the optimum macro-siting of a potential site for an offshore wind farm around Jeju Island using the RDAPS sea wind model. The statistical model was developed by analyzing the sea wind data from RDAPS model, and the meso-scale digital wind map was prepared. To develop the high resolution spatial calibration model, Artificial Neural Network(ANN) models were used to construct the wind and bathymetric maps. Accuracy and consistency of wind/bathymetric spatial calibration models were obtained using analysis of variance. The optimization problem was defined to maximize the energy density satisfying the criteria of maximum water depth and maximum distance from the coastline. The candidate site was selected through Genetic Algorithm(GA). From the results, it is possible to predict roughly a candidate site location for the installation of the offshore wind jam, and to evaluate the wind resources of the proposed site.
Seafloor sediment mapping is an essential research topic in shallow coastal waters, especially in port development, benthic habitat mapping, and underwater communications. The seafloor sediments can be interpreted by collecting sediment samples directly in the field using a grab sampler or corer. Another method is optical, especially using underwater cameras and videos. Both methods each have weaknesses in terms of area coverage (mechanic) and accurate positioning (optic). The latest technology used to overcome it is the acoustic method (echosounder) with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Real Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning. Therefore, in this study will propose the classification of seafloor sediments in coastal waters using acoustic method that is Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) multi-frequency with five frequency (200 kHz, 250 kHz, 300 kHz, 350 kHz, and 400 kHz). In this study, the deep neural network (DNN) used the bathymetric multi frequency, bathymetric difference inters frequencies, and bathymetric features from 5 (five) frequencies as input layer and 4 (four) sediment types in 74 (seventy-four) sample sediment as output layer to make a seafloor sediment map. Results of sediment mapping using the DNN method show an overall accuracy of 71.6% (significant) and a kappa coefficient of 0.59 (moderate). The distribution of seafloor sediment in the study area is mainly silt (41.6%), followed by clayey sand (36.6%), sandy silt (14.2%), and silty sand (7.5%).
The combination of Multi-Beam Echo Sounder swath bathymetry and high-resolution towed Sidescan sonar provides a powerful method of examination about hydrographic survey results. In this paper, we investigate the fast method of 3D bathymetric reconstruction with the Digital Sidescan sonar(Benthos SIS 1500) and Shallow Multi-Beam Echo Sounder(Reson Seabat 8125). The Seabat 8125 is a 455KHz high resolution focused Multibeam echo sounder(MBES) system which measures the relative water depth across a wide swath perpendicular to a vessel's track. The Benthos SIS1500 is a chirp(nominal fq. 200KHz) sonar which map the topographical features & sediment texture of ocean bottom using backscattered amplitude. We generates the very large 3D bathymetric texture mapping model with the Helical System's HHViewer and describes additional benefits of combining MBES and Sidescan Sonar imagery, the removal of geometric distortions in the model and a deterministic sounding noise.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is one of the most efficient technologies to obtain the topographic and bathymetric map of coastal zones, superior to other technologies, such as sound navigation and ranging (SONAR) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). However, the measurement results using LiDAR are vulnerable to environmental factors. To achieve a correspondence between the acquired LiDAR data and reality, error sources must be considered, such as the water surface slope, water turbidity, and seafloor slope. Based on the knowledge of those factors' effects, error corrections can be applied. We concentrated on the effect of the seafloor slope on LiDAR waveforms while restricting other error sources. A simulation regarding in-water beam scattering was conducted, followed by an investigation of the correlation between the seafloor slope and peak timing of return waveforms. As a result, an equation was derived to correct the depth error caused by the seafloor slope.

A detailed bathymetric map is used to construct a morphotectonic map of the Ulleung Basin. The definition of "morphotectonics" and the procedure of the morphotectonic mapping are described in detail. The morphotectonic structural elements of various orders and ranks are also determined using echo-sounding and other geophysical data. Preliminary analysis shows that the newly determined morpho-structural elements coincide with the locations of deeper tectonic features established by the geophysical evidences of the inner sedimentary and/or crustal sections. Therefore, the tectonic zone of the Ulleung Basin has imprinted the patterns of the inherited evolution since Neogene.e Neogene.
Measuring the depth of water is very important in ensuring the protection and safety of seaside. There are many difficulties in making the contour bathymetric map, and contour line due to the limitation of continuous measurement of water depth and collimation with the conventional measuring and positioning methods. But the real-time kinematic GPS (RTK GPS) positioning using a carrier phase enables us to decide a precise position without breaking a signal even under the condition of a moving environment. It is also possible to obtain an accurate depth of water in real time with a fathometer through the measuring of time delay between sending and receiving epochs. This research aims at investigation of accuracy potential of RTK GPS in combination with Echo Sounder(E/S) for the coastal mapping. Apart from this purpose, the accuracy of ambiguity resolution with the OTF(On the Fly) method was tested with respect to the initialization time. The result shows that the accuracy is better than 1cm with 5-minute initialization in the distance of 10km baseline. The seaside topography was measured by the RTK GPS only, on the other hand the seafloor topography was surveyed in combination of RTK GPS and E/S. Comparing to the volume of seaside measured by RTK GPS and digital topographical map, the difference of only 2 % was achieved. This indicates that the coastal mapping with RTK GPS is successfully conducted. In addition it is also demonstrated that the 3-dimensional perspective model resulted from the undersea topography measured by RTK GPS and E/S is very close to that from the digital map. Through this study, it was verified that RTK GPS is to be very useful method in the analysis of coastal morphology owing to its capability of getting the precise DTM for the using of harbor reclamation, dredging, and the estimation of soil movement in a river.

A management information system of the Nanji Islands National Marine Reserve is designed and constructed based on method of integration of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS). The system consists of two sub-systems, dynamic monitoring information system and general database system. The former is used for storage and manage fundamental geographical data (topographical and bathymetric map), satellite remote sensing data (IKONOS, SPOT, IRS, NOAA and SeaWiFS etc.) and multimedia data. The latter is used for storage and manage resource data (shellfish and alga etc.), environmental data (meteorological and hydrologic) and in situ data. As part of electronic government, this system will be submitted to local government for monitoring, management and decision.
In this study, we analyze seabottom conditions and characteristics integrated with topographic data, seafloor mosaic, underwater images and orthophoto(drone) of soft-hard bottom area around the Sib-Ri rock in the northern shore of the East Sea(Gyeongpo Beach, Gangneung). We obtained field survey data around the Sib-Ri rock(about 600 m × 600 m). The Sib-Ri rock is formed by two exposed rocks and surrounding reef. The artificial reef zone made by about 200 ~ 300 structures is shown the western area of the Sib-Ri rock. The underwater rock region is extended from the southwestern area of the exposed the Sib-Ri rock with 9 ~ 11 m depth range. The most broad rocky seabottom area is located in the southwestren area of the Sib-Ri rock with 10 ~ 13 m depth range. The study area were classified into 4 types of seabottom environment based on the analysis of bathymetric data, seafloor mosaics, composition of sediments and images(underwater and drone). The underwater rock zones(Type I) are the most distributed area around the Sib-Ri Rock(about 600 m × 600 m). The soft seabottom area made by sediments layer showed 2 types(Type II: gS(gravelly Sand), Type III: S(Sand)) in the areas between underwater rock zones and western part of the Sib-Ri rock(toward Gyeongpo Beach). The artificial reef zone with a lot of structures is located in the western part of the Sib-Ri rock. Marine algae(about 6 species), Phylum porifera(about 2 species), Phylum echinodermata(about 3 species), Phylum mollusca(about 3 species) and Phylum chordata(about 2 species) are dominant faunal group of underwater image analysis area(about 10 m × 10 m) in the northwestern part of the Sib-Ri rock. The habitat of Phylym mollusca(Lottia dorsuosa, Septifer virgatus) and Phylum arthropoda(Pollicipes mitella, Chthamalus challengeri hoek) appears in the intertidal zone of the Sib-Ri rock. And it is possible to estimate the range and distribution of the habitat based on the integrated study of orthphoto(drone) and bathymetry data. The integrated visualization and mapping techniques using seafloor mosaic images, sediments analysis, underwater images, orthophoto(drone) and topographic data can provide and contribute to figure out the seabottom conditions and characteristics in the shore of the East Sea.
Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) present the important advantage of being able to approach the seafloor more closely than surface vessel surveys can. To collect bathymetric data, bottom material information, and sub-surface images, multibeam echosounder, sidescan sonar (SSS) and subbottom profiler (SBP) equipment mounted on an AUV are powerful tools. The 3000m class AUV URASHIMA was developed by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). After finishing the engineering development and examination phase of a fuel-cell system used for the vehicle's power supply system, a renovated lithium-ion battery power system was installed in URASHIMA. The AUV was redeployed from its prior engineering tasks to scientific use. Various scientific instruments were loaded on the vehicle, and experimental dives for science-oriented missions conducted from 2006. During the experimental cruise of 2007, high-resolution acoustic images were obtained by SSS and SBP on the URASHIMA around the northern Kumano Basin off Japan's Kii Peninsula. The map of backscatter intensity data revealed many debris objects, and SBP images revealed the subsurface structure around the north-eastern end of our study area. These features suggest a structure related to the formation of the latest submarine fan. However, a strong reflection layer exists below ~20 ms below the seafloor in the south-western area, which we interpret as a denudation feature, now covered with younger surface sediments. We continue to improve the vehicle's performance, and expect that many fruitful results will be obtained using URASHIMA.
In this study, we analyze precise seabed geomorphology and conditions for comparing the nearshore areas of the Dongdo(East Island) and the Seodo(West Island) using detailed bathymetry data and seafloor backscattering images, in Dokdo, the East Sea. We have been obtained the detailed bathymetry data and the seafloor backscattering data. The survey range is about $250m{\times}250m$ including land of islets to the nearshore areas of the southern part of the Dongdo and the Seodo. As a result of bathymetry survey, the southern area of the Dongdo(~50 m) is deeper than the Seodo(~30 m) in the water depth. The survey areas are consist of extended bedrocks from land of the Dongdo and the Seodo. The underwater rock region of the Seodo is larger than the Dongdo. In spite of similar extended rocks features from islets, there are some distinctive seabed characteristics between the southern nearshore areas of the Dongdo and the Seodo. The Talus-shaped seafloor environment formed by gravel and underwater rocks originating from the land of the Dongdo is up to about 15 m depth. And the boundary line of between extended bedrocks and seabottom is unclear in the southern nearshore of the Dongdo. On the other hand, the southern coast of the Seodo is characterized by relatively large scale underwater rocks and evenly distributed sediments, which clearly distinguish the boundary of between extended bedrocks and seafloor. This is because the tuff layers exposed to the coastal cliffs of the Dongdo are weak against weathering and erosion. It is considered that there are more influences of the clastic sediments carried from the land of the Dongdo compared with the Seodo. Particularly, the land of the Dongdo has been undergoing construction activities. And also a highly unstable ground such as faults, joints and cracks appears in the Dongdo. In previous study, there are dissimilar features of the massive tuff breccia formations of the Dongdo and the Seodo. These conditions are thought to have influenced the different seabed characteristics in the southern nearshore areas of the Dongdo and the Seodo.
