Optimal Rain Gauge Density and Sub-basin Size for SWAT Model Application (SWAT 모형의 적용을 위한 적정 강우계밀도의 추정)

  • This study estimated the optimal rain gauge density and sub-basin size for the application of a daily rainfall-runoff analysis model called SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool). Simulated rainfall data using a WGR multi-dimensional precipitation model (Waymire et al., 1984) were applied to SWAT for runoff estimation, and then the runoff error was analyzed with respect to various rain gauge density and sub-basin size. As results of the study, we could find that the optimal sub-basin size and the representative area of one rain gauge are similar to be about $80km^2$ for the Yong-Dam dam basin.

  • The 3S Basin is described as an important contributor in terms of many aspects in the Mekong River Basin in Southeast Asia. However, the 3S Basin has been suffering adverse consequences of changing discharge and sediment, which are derived from farming, deforestation, hydropower dam construction, climate change, and soil erosion. Consequently, a large population and ecology system that live along the 3S Basin are seriously affected. Accordingly, the calculating and simulating discharge and sediment become ever more urgent. There are many methods to simulate discharge and sediment. However, most of them are designed only during a single rainfall event and they require many kinds of data. Therefore, this study applied a Catchment-scale Soil Erosion model (C-SEM) to simulate discharge and sediment in the 3S Basin. The simulated results were judged with others references's data and the observed discharge of Strung Treng station, which is located in the mainstream and near the outlet of the 3S Basin. The results revealed that the 3S Basin distributes 31% of the Mekong River Basin's total discharge. In addition, the simulated sediment results at the 3S Basin's outlet also substantiated the importance of the 3S Basin to the Mekong River Basin. Furthermore, the results are also useful for the sustainable management practices in the 3S Basin, where the sediment data is unavailable.

  • The cavitation-induced fluctuating pressure of the container ship named "Sydney Express" is measured in Samsung Large Cavitation Tunnel(SCAT). In the measurements, a complete ship model is employed. The effects of thrust coefficient and cavitation number on cavity pattern and cavitation-induced fluctuating pressure were investigated experimentally. It is demonstrated that the fluctuating pressure coefficient is very sensitive to the cavitation number. The results of cavitation and pressure fluctuations are compared with those of ITTC and HSVA, which shows fairly good agreement. It is exhibited that the removal of rudder can significantly change the loading condition of a propeller, and can reduce the fluctuating pressure coefficient almost by half.

The analysis of the low-flow statistics using regression model at the Chonbuk regional ungaged basin (회귀모형을 이용한 전북지역 미계측 유역의 저유량 해석)

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the low-flow statistics at the mountainous watershed. The formulation for the estimation of the design low-flow statistics was obtained by means of a hydraulic approach applied to a simple conceptual model for a mountainous watershed. Three of the independent variables associated with the low-flow statistics is watershed area(A), average basin slope(S) and the base flow recession constant(K); Watershed area was measured from topographic maps and average basin slope is approximated in this study using Strahler's slope determining method. And base flow recession constant computed using Vogel and Kroll's method. Unfortunately, this method is usually unavailable at ungaged sites. In this study, recession constant at ungaged sites is estimated using graphical regression method used by Giese and Mason. The model for estimating low-flow statistics were applied to all 61 catchments in the Sumjin, Mankyung basin.

A Linear Reservoir Model with Kslman Filter in River Basin (Kalman Filter 이론에 의한 하천유역의 선형저수지 모델)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a linear reservoir model with Kalman filter using Kalman filter theory which removes a physical uncertainty of :ainfall-runoff process. A linear reservoir model, which is the basic model of Kalman filter, is used to calculate runoff from rainfall in river basin. A linear reservoir model with Kalman filter is composed of a state-space model using a system model and a observation model. The state-vector of system model in linear. The average value of the ordinate of IUH for a linear reservoir model with Kalman filter is used as the initial value of state-vector. A .linear reservoir model with Kalman filter shows better results than those by linear reserevoir model, and decreases a physical uncertainty of rainfall-runoff process in river basin.

  • A full-scale field experiment is an important part in the design of ships and offshore structures. Full-scale tests in the ice-covered sea, however, are usually very expensive and difficult tasks. Model tests in a refrigerated ice tank may substitute this difficulty of full-scale field tests. One of the major tasks to perform proper model tests in an ice towing tank is to select a realistic material for model ice which shows correct similitude with natural sea ice. This study focuses on the testing material properties and the selection of model ice material which will be used in an ice model basin. The first Korean ice model basin will be constructed at the Maritime & Ocean Engineering Research Institute (MOERI) in 2009. With an application to the MOERI ice model basin, in this study the material properties of EG/AD/S model ice of IOT (Institute for Ocean Technology) Canada, were tested. Through comprehensive bending tests, the elastic modulus and the flexural strength of EG/AD/S model ice were evaluated and the results were compared with published test results from Canada. Instead of using an ice model basin, a cold room facility was used for making a model ice specimen. Since the cold room adopts a different freezing procedure to make model ice, the strength of the model ice specimen differs from the published test results. The reason for this difference is discussed and the future development for a making model ice is recommended.

Experimental investigation of frictional resistance reduction with air layer on the hull bottom of a ship

  • In an effort to cope with recent high oil price and global warming, developments of air lubricated ships have been pursued to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to save fuel costs by reducing the frictional resistance. In this study, reduction in the frictional resistance by air lubrication with air layers generated on the lower surface of a flat plate was investigated experimentally in the large water tunnel of SSMB. The generated air layers were observed, and changes in the local frictional drag were measured at various flow rates of injected air. The results indicated that air lubrication with air layers might be useful in reducing the frictional resistance at specific conditions of air injection. Accordingly, resistance and self-propulsion tests for a 66K DWT bulk carrier were carried out in the towing tank of SSMB to estimate the expected net power savings.

Simulation on Runoff of Rivers in Jeju Island Using SWAT Model (SWAT 모형을 이용한 제주도 하천의 유출량 모의)

  • The discharge within the basin in Jeju Island was calculated by using SWAT model, which a Semi-distributed rainfall-runoff model to the important rivers. The basin of Chunmi river of the eastern region of Jeju Island, as the result of correcting as utilizing direct runoff data of 2 surveys, appeared the similar value to the existing basin average runoff rate as 22% of average direct runoff rate for the applied period. The basin of Oaedo river of the northern region showed $R^2$ of 0.93, RMSE of 14.92 and ME of 0.70 as the result of correcting as utilizing runoff data in the occurrence of 7 rainfalls. The basin of Ongpo river of the western region showed $R^2$ of 0.86, RMSE of 0.62 and ME of 0.56 as the result of correcting as utilizing runoff data except for the period of flood in $2002{\sim}2003$. Yeonoae river of the southern region showed $R^2$ of 0.85, RMSE of 0.99 and ME of 0.83 as the result of correcting as utilizing runoff data of 2003. As the result of calculating runoff for the long term about 4 basins of Jeju Island from the above results, SWAT model wholly appears the excellent results about the long-term daily runoff simulation.

Assessing the Suitability of Satellite Precipitation Products for Flood Modeling in the Tonle Sap Lake Basin, Cambodia

  • The Tonle Sap is the richest and diverseness of freshwater ecosystem in Southeast Asia, receiving nurturing water flows from the Mekong and its immediate basin. In addition, the rapid development in the Tonle Sap Lake (TSL) Basin, and flood inundation may threaten the natural diversities and characteristics. The impacts of flood inundation in 11 sub-basins contributing to the Tonle Sap Lake were assessed using the Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) model to quantify the potential magnitude and extent of the flooding. The RRI model is set up by using gauged rainfall data to simulate the information of river discharge and flood inundation of huge possible flood events. Moreover, two satellite precipitation products (SPPs), CHIRPS and GSMaP, within respectively spatial resolutions of 0.05° and 0.1°, are utilized as an input for the RRI model to simulate river discharge, flood depth, and flood extent for the great TSL Basin of Cambodia. This study used statistical indicators such as NSE, PBIAS, RSR, and R2 as crucial indices to evaluate the performance of the RRI model. Therefore, the findings of this study could provide promising guidance in hydrological modeling and the significant implications for flood risk management and disaster preparedness in the region.

A RANS CFD Based Approach for Resistance, Maneuvering and Seakeeping

  • The primary objective of this work is to develop methodologies for virtual model basin and to demonstrate the capabilities for generic multi-hull ship geometry. A computational fluid dynamics approach is used to simulate various model basin tests for steady resistance, maneuvering and seakeeping. For a catamaran hull configuration, the methodologies are used for solving these problems and the results are discussed. Computational results are compared with the results of a benchmarked potential flow theory method for calm water resistance.
