  • In this study, a damage detection approach using train-induced vibration response of the bridge is proposed, utilizing only direct structural analysis by means of introducing soft computing methods. In this approach, the possible damage patterns of the bridge are assumed according to theoretical and empirical considerations at first. Then, the running train-induced dynamic response of the bridge under a certain damage pattern is calculated employing a developed train-bridge interaction analysis program. When the calculated result is most identical to the recorded response, this damage pattern will be the solution. However, owing to the huge number of possible damage patterns, it is extremely time-consuming to calculate the bridge responses of all the cases and thus difficult to identify the exact solution quickly. Therefore, the soft computing methods are introduced to quickly solve the problem in this approach. The basic concept and process of the proposed approach are presented in this paper, and its feasibility is numerically investigated using two different train models and a simple girder bridge model.

  • In the KIOST MOERI model ice basin, a lot of experiments to find the material properties of model ice and model ship tests are being performed. And therefore many data information was produced, yet it was saved as excel data format. In order to manage and use the data more effectively and systematically, a proper database management is required. To make realistic engineering DBMS(database management system), understanding of test process, the usage of data, design of data schema and computer language and system management are required. In this paper, basic design process and usage of DBMS based on network and multiple user concept is introduced.

  • While human error has been one of the main technical issues from the early era of human factors engineering, it still remains hot and somewhat vague due to the various types of the concepts and words on human errors in practice. There may be some technical limitations hindering human error prevention activities. This paper introduces the human error activities described in the papers if this issue of ESK Journal according to a few criteria proposed for more effective technical review. And two basic technical issues are discussed on the concepts, perspectives, and classifications about human errors. Each activity shows its own artifacts associated with the safety purpose and the nature of the industry. This paper also provides a set of new technical bases proposed for a more effective management of human errors by considering the dependability, representativeness, and structuredness of human errors. Additionally, this paper includes some new challenges over the current prevention-oriented activities; positive utilizations of human errors to training/education, advertisements, fun and entertainments, and nudges.

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) produces time-series data of neural oscillations in the brain, and is one of the most commonly used methods for investigating both normal brain functions and brain disorders. Quantitative EEG analysis enables identification of frequencies and brain activity that are activated or impaired. With studies on the structural and functional networks of the brain, the concept of the brain as a complex network has been fundamental to understand normal brain functions and the pathophysiology of various neurological disorders. Functional connectivity is a measure of neural synchrony in the brain network that refers to the statistical interdependency between neural oscillations over time. In this review, we first discuss the basic methods of EEG analysis, including preprocessing, spectral analysis, and functional-connectivity and graph-theory measures. We then review previous EEG studies of brain network characterization in several neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. Identifying the EEG-based network characteristics might improve the understanding of disease processes and aid the development of novel therapeutic approaches for various neurological disorders.

  • Relationship between parent and children is basic relation and initial relationship. It is essential research to explore relationship between parent's role satisfaction and children's health promotion in rapidly changing social situation influence parenting attitude. The purpose of this research to explore first mother's parenting belief, communication, filial piety by indepth interview and literature review. Method of research is literature review (books and articles) and Web site researching (home page) and contacted two mothers to do individual interview. Data was collected and analysed according to the objectives. The result of this study as follows. 1) It was problem that is child rearing and child education due to working parents. 2) It was discussed parent's belief regarding child rearing. The belief was influence by culture, social economic status, family friend and internet, advise of professionals. The subjects of this study was influenced by family, friend and internet Web site. 3) Parent-child communication was reviewed and discussed about influence of masmedia and early education system. Children's level of language development was rapidly improved by role play and read the book with mother. 4) It was discussed concept of filial piety. Parent was not expected filial piety from their children. Parent thought that they already received filial piety from their children, because children gave them pleasure and happiness during growing process. Parents want their children become mature person and adapt to informative changing society. Finally, it is needed further interdisciplinary study for parent-child health promotion and growth and development in rapidly changing society.

  • The concept of performance based seismic design has been gradually accepted by the earthquake engineering profession recently, in which the cost-effectiveness criterion is one of the most important principles and more attention is paid to the structural performance at the inelastic stage. Since there are many uncertainties in seismic design, reliability analysis is a major task in performance based seismic design. However, structural reliability analysis may be very costly and time consuming because the limit state function is usually a highly nonlinear implicit function with respect to the basic design variables, especially for the complex large-scale structures for dynamic and nonlinear analysis. Understanding statistical properties of the structural inelastic deformation, which is the aim of the present paper, is helpful to develop an efficient approximate approach of reliability analysis. The present paper studies the statistical properties of the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames subjected to earthquake load. The randomness of earthquake load, dead load, live load, steel elastic modulus, yield strength and structural member dimensions are considered. Possible probability distributions for the maximum story are evaluated using K-S test. The results show that the choice of the probability distribution for the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames is related to the mean value of the maximum elastoplastic story drift. When the mean drift is small (less than 0.3%), an extreme value type I distribution is the best choice. However, for large drifts (more than 0.35%), an extreme value type II distribution is best.

  • The basic design concept of the DACS(Divert and Attitude Control System) propellant is presented and the geometry optimization of the DACS propellant with limited outer diameter and maximum burning rate of the propellant is performed. Two-side burning surface conditions burned at the core and the one side of the propellant are applied to the propellant. And the optimized values for the radius of core, length of propellant, angle of end-side surface are obtained by the PSO algorithm. The direction for DACS propellant design is suggested by analyzing optimized design points for various burning rate.

  • The purpose of this study is to know the concept of Eco-industrial Park and How to use the thermal effluents from power plants. Thermal effluents, which use sea water for cooling, from power plants have been discharged with about $6{\sim}7^{\circ}C$ higher temperature than near sea area. Therefore, it could effect on the marine ecosystem as a external pressure factor that increase the artificial thermal load in near sea area. The applications of thermal effluents had been surveyed through the several internal and external cases for utilizing heat sources and reducing the thermal load. As the precedence research for applying, the amount of heat sources of thermal effluents was evaluated. When the thermal effluents was fully applied in heat sources and available heat, assume that use heating season by 12 hours a day of demanded available heat, it was possible to calculate total 198 Tcal of energy saving.

  • Six smooth flat tensile specimens and eighteen punch specimens with three different thicknesses were machined from steel of JIS G3131 SPHC. In addition to punch tests, incremental tensile tests were conducted to obtain average true flow stress - logarithmic true strain curves. Through parametric FE simulations for the tensile specimens, material parameters related to GTN model were identified. Using indenters with three kinds of radius, punch tests were carried out to obtain fracture characteristics of punch specimens. Numerical analyses using both fracture models, GTN and $J_2$ plasticity model, gave that the former estimated well the fracture of punch specimen but the latter did not. A new concept for critical size of plate elements was introduced based on minimum relative sharpness between contact structures. Consequently, a new criterion for critical element size was proposed to be less than 20% of minimum relative radius of interacting structures.
