The traditional demand prediction was based on the technique wherein electric power corporations made monthly or seasonal estimation of electric power consumption for each area and subscription type for the next one or two years to consider both seasonally generated and local consumed amounts. Note, however, that techniques such as pricing, power generation plan, or sales strategy establishment were used by corporations without considering the production, comparison, and analysis techniques of the predicted consumption to enable efficient power consumption on the actual demand side. In this paper, to calculate the predicted value of electric power consumption on a short-term basis (15 minutes) according to the amount of electric power actually consumed for 15 minutes on the demand side, we performed comparison and analysis by applying a 15-minute interval prediction technique to the average and that to the time series analysis to show how they were made and what we obtained from the simulations.
Shear connectors are generally used to link the slab and girders together in slab-on-girder bridge structures. Damage of shear connectors in such structures will result in shear slippage between the slab and girders, which significantly reduces the load-carrying capacity of the bridge. Because shear connectors are buried inside the structure, routine visual inspection is not able to detect conditions of shear connectors. A few methods have been proposed in the literature to detect the condition of shear connectors based on vibration measurements. This paper proposes a different dynamic condition assessment approach to identify the damage of shear connectors in slab-on-girder bridge structures based on power spectral density transmissibility (PSDT). PSDT formulates the relationship between the auto-spectral densities of two responses in the frequency domain. It can be used to identify shear connector conditions with or without reference data of the undamaged structure (or the baseline). Measured impact force and acceleration responses from hammer tests are analyzed to obtain the frequency response functions at sensor locations by experimental modal analysis. PSDT from the slab response to the girder response is derived with the obtained frequency response functions. PSDT vectors in the undamaged and damaged states can be compared to identify the damage of shear connectors. When the baseline is not available, as in most practical cases, PSDT vectors from the measured response at a reference sensor to those of the slab and girder in the damaged state can be used to detect the damage of shear connectors. Numerical and experimental studies on a concrete slab supported by two steel girders are conducted to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach. Identification results demonstrate that damages of shear connectors are identified accurately and efficiently with and without the baseline. The proposed method is also used to evaluate the conditions of shear connectors in a real composite bridge with in-field testing data.
This paper describes a procedure to develop fragility curves for woodframe structures subjected to lateral wind loads. The fragilities are cast in terms of horizontal displacement criteria (maximum drift at the top of the shearwalls). The procedure is illustrated through the development of fragility curves for one and two-story residential woodframe buildings in high wind regions. The structures were analyzed using a monotonic pushover analysis to develop the relationship between displacement and base shear. The base shear values were then transformed to equivalent nominal wind speeds using information on the geometry of the baseline buildings and the wind load equations (and associated parameters) in ASCE 7-02. Displacement vs. equivalent nominal wind speed curves were used to determine the critical wind direction, and Monte Carlo simulation was used along with wind load parameter statistics provided by Ellingwood and Tekie (1999) to construct displacement vs. wind speed curves. Wind speeds corresponding to a presumed limit displacement were used to construct fragility curves. Since the fragilities were fit well using a lognormal CDF and had similar logarithmic standard deviations (${\xi}$), a quick analysis to develop approximate fragilities is possible, and this also is illustrated. Finally, a compound fragility curve, defined as a weighted combination of individual fragilities, is developed.
Effects of strain hardening exponents on the retardation behavior of fatigue crack propagation are experimentally investigated. The retardation of fatigue crack propagation seems to be induced by the crack closure at crack tip. The phenomenon of crack closure becomes remarkable with the increment of strain hardening exponent and magnitude of percent peak load. The ratio of crack growth increment(a$\_$d//w$\_$d/) is influenced by a single overloading (a$\_$d/) and estimated plastic zone size (W$\_$d/=2r$\_$y/) is increased according with the increasing of strain ha.dening exponents. The number of retarded crack growth cycles were (N$\_$d/) decreased as the baseline stress intensity factor .ange( K$\_$b/) was increased. Within the limitation of these experimental results obtained under the single overload, an empirical relation between crack retardation ratio (Nd/N*), strain hardening exponent (n) and percent peak load (%PL) has been proposed as; Nd/N*= exp [PL $.$ PL$.$A(n)+B(n) ] where, A(n)=${\alpha}$n+${\beta}$, B(n)=${\gamma}$n+$\delta$, PL=%PL/100 and ${\alpha}$=0.78, ${\beta}$=0.54, ${\gamma}$=0.58 and $\delta$=-0.01, It is interesting to note that all these constants are identical for materials such as aluminum(A3203), steel(S4SC), steel(SS41) and stainless steel(SUS316) used in this experimental study.
Non-monolithic concrete structural connections are commonly used both in new constructions and retrofitted structures where anchors are used for connections. Often, flaws are present in anchor system due to poor workmanship and deterioration; and methods available to check the quality of the composite system afterward are very limited. In case of presence of flaw, load transfer mechanism inside the anchor system is severely disturbed, and the load carrying capacity drops drastically. This raises the question of safety of the entire structural system. The present study proposes a wave propagation technique to assess the integrity of the anchor system. A chemical anchor (embedded in concrete) composite system comprising of three materials viz., steel (anchor), polymer (adhesive) and concrete (base) is considered for carrying out the wave propagation studies. Piezoelectric transducers (PZTs) affixed to the anchor head is used for actuation and the PZTs affixed to the surrounding concrete surface of the concrete-anchor system are used for sensing the propagated wave through the anchor interface to concrete. Experimentally validated finite element model is used to investigate three types of composite chemical anchor systems. Studies on the influence of geometry, material properties of the medium and their distribution, and the flaw types on the wave signals are carried out. Temporal energy of through time domain differentiation is found as a promising technique for identifying the flaws in the multi-layered composite system. The present study shows a unique procedure for monitoring of inaccessible but crucial locations of structures by using wave signals without baseline information.
A VCHP was fabricated and tested for its thermal performance. The container was made of copper, and the working fluid was water. STS-316 screen of mesh number 100 was inserted as a capillary structure. As a baseline performance, a normal heat pipe of the same dimensions was tested in advance to compare with VCHP, where an inert gas container was attached. The outer diameter of the heat pipe was 12.8 mm and the total length was 600 mm. The evaporator and the condenser lengths were both 200 mm. The thermal load ranged from 20 to 300W. Typical result revealed that the operating temperature of the VCHP stayed almost constant, while that of the normal heat pipe varied as much as 40$^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the VCHP is very effective for temperature control of heat-dissipating devices.
A wind turbine simulation program for the coupled dynamics of aerodynamics, elasticity, multi-body dynamics and controls of turbine is newly developed by combining an aero-elastic code and a multi-body dynamics code. The aero-elastic code, based on the blade momentum theory and generalized dynamic wake theory, is developed by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA). The multi-body dynamics code is commercial one which is capable of accounting for geometric nonlinearity and twist deflection. A turbulent wind load case is simulated for the NREL 5-MW baseline wind turbine model by the developed program and FAST. As a result, the two results agree well enough to verify the reliability of the developed program.
Adaptive neural networks based lateral controller is presented to guarantee path following performance for vehicle lane keeping in the presence of parameter time-varying characteristics of the vehicle lateral dynamics due to the road surface condition, load distribution, tire pressure and so on. The proposed adaptive controller could compensate vehicle lateral dynamics deviated from nominal dynamics resulting from parameter variations by incorporating it with neural networks that have the ability to approximate any given nonlinear function by adjusting weighting matrices. The controller is derived by using Lyapunov-based approach, which provides adaptive update rules for weighting matrices of neural networks. To show the superiority of the presented adaptive neural networks controller, the simulation results are given while comparing with backstepping controller chosen as the baseline controller. According to the simulation results, it is shown that the proposed controller can effectively keep the vehicle tracking the pre-given trajectory in high velocity and curvature with much accuracy under parameter variations.
Pohang Wind Energy Research Center (PoWER-C) is developing a 3 MW Radial Flux Permanent Magnet (RFPM) Synchronous Generator for offshore Wind Energy Converter (WEC). The blade rotor rpm is 15.7 and the gear ratio is set to be 92.93. The nominal generator rpm at the rated load is about 1459. Baseline design with surface mounted PM magnets are completed. However, there is some concern about the excessive eddy current heating in the magnets. To alleviate this problem, another design with embedded magnet is going on. With embedded magnets, the generator length should be increased to compensate the increased flux leakage. But the field fluctuation in the magnets due to the slots are greatly reduced. This means less eddy currents and lower magnet operating temperature. In this report, engineering efforts for embedded rotor is presented.
